Contact Us Philosopher of the Month August 2003 - Frank Ramsey Peter Cave Frank Plumpton Ramsey was a big man, big in body, in intellect and in breadth of interests - but small in life-span. He was born in 1903 and died in 1930, aged 26. Despite his short life - and the consequent small output of papers - Ramsey remains an influential figure, having left his mark not solely on philosophy (especially philosophical logic, probability theory and attempts to derive mathematics from logic), but also on economics and mathematics proper. Ramsey breathed Cambridge college life. His father was president of Magdalene and the young Ramsey studied at Trinity, became a fellow of King's and lectured in mathematics. His brother was to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Ramsey, as a student and young don, impressed G E Moore, the great economist John Maynard Keynes (despite demolishing his theory of probability) and - an unusual achievement here - even the anguished genius, Wittgenstein. Indeed, Wittgenstein writes, in Philosophical Investigations , how Ramsey helped him - to a degree he is hardly able to estimate - to realise earlier mistakes. It was the young Ramsey who, with C K Ogden, first translated Wittgenstein's

Frank Ramsey, who first proved Ramsey theory in 1928, was a remarkable man. He grew up in Cambridge, England. In 1925 young Ramsey graduated as the university's top mathematics student. Although philosophy and mathematical logic chiefly engaged him, he also contributed to economics, probability, decision theory, cognitive psychology and semantics, and always with keen insight and intelligence. Ramsey wrote only two papers on mathematical economics, but both are widely quoted in mathematical economics literature. Tragically, in 1930, at the age of 26, Ramsey took ill and died of complications from abdominal surgery, at the height of his intellectual powers. An irony is attached to the story of how, two years before his death, Ramsey derived his eponymous theory

Frank Plumpton Ramsey, 1903-1930.
The Cambridge philosopher Frank P. Ramsey died tragically at the age of 26. A wunderkind of first order, Ramsey had already written three important contributions to economics. The first, "Truth and Probability" (written in 1926, published 1931), was the first paper to lay out the theory of subjective probability and begin to axiomatize choice under (subjective) uncertainty , a task completed decades later by Bruno de Finetti and Leonard Savage . This was written "in opposition" to John Maynard Keynes 's own information-theoretic Treatise on Probability . Ramsey's second contribution was his theory of taxation (1927), generating the famous " Boiteux -Ramsey" pricing rule. Ramsey's third contribution was his exercise in determining optimal savings (1928), the famous " optimal growth " model what has since become known as the "Ramsey model" one of the earliest applications of the calculus of variations to economics. The young Ramsey helped in the translation of Ludwig Wittgenstein's notoriously difficult Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) - Ramsey was also among the first to review it and even served as the great philosopher's thesis supervisor at Cambridge. The gracious (if anachronistic) acknowledgement to Ramsey by Piero

Frank P. Ramsey British philosopher who died young but left many important ideas: the improvement of Russell's theory of types, the distinction between logical and semantic paradoxes, the subjective analysis of probability, the Ramsey-sentence for eliminating overt reference to theoretical entities, and the theory of truth. A logical paradox is such that a contradiction can be proved within a (axiomatic) system using logical concepts, inferences and definitions allowed within the system. Thus, Russell's paradox which uses the concept of set and its membership (which Ramsey regarded as a logical concept), the definition of "Russell set" (the set of every set such that it is not a member of itself; see Russell's picture ), and standard logic, is reconstructed as a logical paradox, according to Ramsey. A semantic paradox (Ramsey called "epistemological") involves extra terms in addition to the preceding. Thus the famous liar paradox which can be derived from the statement This statement is not true makes an essential use of the (semantic) predicate "true", so that it is not logical but semantic.

Before Ramsey died at the age of 26 he did an extraordinary amount of pioneering work, in economics and mathematics as well as in logic and philosophy. 3 Belief and truth
In defining a belief’s strength by its effects on our actions, Ramsey foreshadows later theories which define mental states by their causes, effects and interactions (see Functionalism ). In ‘Facts and Propositions’ (1927) he extends this idea from degrees to contents of beliefs, taking (for example) ‘the equivalence between believing ‘‘not- p ’’ and disbelieving ‘‘ p ’’ … to be defined [by their sharing] many of their causes and … effects’ ). But after failing to define the contents of beliefs as effectively as their degrees, Ramsey concludes that his view, that ‘the meaning of a sentence [expressing a belief] is to be defined by reference to the actions to which asserting it would lead’ , remains ‘very vague and undeveloped’ It is, however, developed enough to stop Ramsey’s theory of truth being, as is usually supposed, that truth is definable by the fact that for all p , it is true that p iff p (see Truth, deflationary theories of

NBA Statistics Other Resources A 6-foot-3 guard at the University of Kentucky, Ramsey helped lead the school to the 1951 NCAA championship as a sophomore. Kentucky won 32 of 34 games that season and 29 of 32 in 1951/52. Because of recruiting violations, however, the school wasn't allowed to field a team the following season. Coach Adolph Rupp kept the players together and worked them frequently in intra-squad games. The Southeastern Conference voted to give three players, Ramsey, Cliff Hagan, and Lou Tsioropoulos, an extra year of eligibility, but the NCAA wouldn't allow them to take part in post-season play. Kentucky won all 25 of its games, then sat out the NCAA tournament. Ramsey joined the Boston Celtics of the NBA in 1954 and became the team's first "sixth man," coming off the bench to provide instant offense. With the Celtics, he frequently played small forward. Despite his part-time role, he averaged more than 15 points a game in five of his nine professional seasons. He missed the 1955/56 season because of military service. After he returned in the fall of 1956, the Celtics won seven NBA championships in eight seasons. Ramsey's 20-foot shot in the second overtime of the seventh and decisive game against the St. Louis Hawks won the first of those championships, in 1957.
