Z Srinivasa Aaiyangar Ramanujan Biography Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan [srInivAsa aiyangAr rAmAnujan] (December 22, 1887 – April 26, 1920) was a groundbreaking Indian mathematician. A child prodigy, he was largely self-taught in mathematics and never attended university.
Life
Born in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India, by the age of twelve Ramanujan had mastered trigonometry so completely that he was inventing sophisticated theorems that astonished his teachers. In 1898 he entered the Town High School in Kumbakonam. He published several papers in Indian mathematical journals and later got the interests of leading European mathematicians in his work. A 1913 letter to G. H. Hardy contained a long list of theorems without proof. After some initial scepticism, Hardy replied and invited Ramanujan to England. As an orthodox Brahmin, Ramanujan consulted the astrological data for his journey, because his mother was horrified that he would lose his caste by traveling to foreign shores.
A fruitful collaboration, which Hardy described as "the one romantic incident in my life", soon developed. Hardy said of some of Ramanujan's formulas, which he could not understand, that "a single look at them is enough to show that they could only be written down by a mathematician of the highest class. They must be true, for if they were not true, no one would have had the imagination to invent them."

Srinivasa Ramanujan: A Mathematical Genius Curr. Sci , 697). The first is that he holds the view that too much importance is given to the role played by G. H. Hardy and others in enabling Ramanujan to become a great mathematician. This view is certainly unorthodox and even original. Murukesapillai has gone one step further (see Curr. Sci Ramanujan Journal deja vu Ramayana and the Mahabharatha
Ramanujan is indeed an epic mathematician and so also the story of his life. Though the lack of an index, both subject-wise and author-wise, cannot be compensated for, the appendices and the notes at the end of the book are very valuable additional material. I have no doubt in my mind, that this book does provide an easy entry to the magnificent palace full of mathematical riches which Ramanujan has bequeathed to the mathematicians of the 20th and even the 21st century. Peculiar gemstones in the realms
Beyone where daylight's limits lie. Sapphires in sepulchral caverns
Innocent of Apollo's rays,
Through the intervening blackness
Bluely glimmered in his gaze. In his absence, none can see them,
So they slumber in the dark -
Rare, unchanging, age by age,
Awaiting some spelunker's spark. J.D. Memory

A little known museum S. MUTHIAH The Ramanujan Museum is a small, one-room museum visited mainly by school children. Few adults even know about it and it is on no tourist map of the city, not even in guides meant for more scholarly visitors to Madras. But in this little-known museum, there's a treasure of pictures, letters and documents focussing on one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th Century.
I TAKE another detour this fortnight, this one necessitated by a rather stern admonition from Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences who pointed out to me the dangers of relying on secondary and tertiary sources and repeating the errors in them. He was referring to my piece on Sir Francis Spring on January 15th and my reference to an Englishman named AIGAR who had helped Ramanujan in the Port Trust. Dr. Rao and several others have pointed out that the benefactor was, in fact, S.N. (Narayana) Aiyar. I had apparently been perpetuating a printer's mistake, though I must say that in the three or four articles I had seen `Aigar' used, it was repeated that he was the Port Manager and I had accepted the name as being correct, as an Indian was unlikely to have held the No.2 position at the time. That mystery too has now been solved.

Hardy formuliert.
