Most previous cone beam reconstruction methods are approximations based on the well known slice-by-slice tomographic approach used for three decades. Slice reconstruction methods are appropriate for linear array sensors that lie in the plane of the slice. They are not appropriate for area imagers. Why: Area imagers of X-ray radiations are becoming practical and are changing the landscape of tomography. Area sensors make better use of the output of the radiation source, and this will greatly increase the speed of scanning. Importantly use of area sensors also promises to provide isotropic point spread functions (equal resolution in all directions). Tomographic reconstruction starts with Radon's 1917 formula [3]. This can be discretized naturally to deal with sets of parallel beam scans as produced by early scanners using a single radiation detector. In the 1970s multiple detectors arranged in a linear array or an arc where introduced to better exploit the X-ray tube output and to speed scanning. Parallel beam reconstruction methods do not apply to data collected from the fans of beams sampled by the one-d detector arrays. Various approximation were used initially. Horn extended the computational reconstruction methods to arbitrary ray-sampling schemes in two papers published by the IEEE in the late 1970s [1, 2]

Dear Sir/Madam
I am a fourth year student studying at the University of Glasgow. I'm doing
a project this year titled "Some Inequalities for Eigenvalues, determinants
and matrix entries". There is a lot of emphasis on Gerschgorins Theorem
I was wondering if you could provide any information about Gerschgorins
work and life and if you have any links of the papers he compiled. Any

Implementing least squares methods in maximum likelihood problems
Prof Mike Osborne, MSI Abstract It is well known that the Gauss-Newton algorithm for solving nonlinear least squares problems is a special case of the scoring algorithm for maximizing log likelihoods. What has received less attention is that the computation of the current correction in the scoring algorithm in both line search and trust region forms can be cast as a linear least squares problem. This is an important observation both because it provides a general framework for likelihood computations which accords with current computational orthodoxy, and because it can be seen as underpinning computational procedures which have been developed for particular classes of likelihood problems (for example generalised linear models). Aspects of this orthodoxy as it affects considerations such as convergence and effectiveness will be reviewed. Wednesday 7 April, 2004

First entry : m Second entry : s Next s*m entries : row vectors of the first, second,..., s-th matrix, encoded as decimal number. The vector consists of the digits of the b-ary expansion of the number, most significant bits corresponding to the initial coordinates of the vector. (E.g. b = 2, m = 8: entry 11 row vector [0 1 1 1] ) The matrices are such that the b-ary fractional digit vectors of the points are obtained by multiplying the s matrices with the same b-ary (index) digit vector from the right All of the following matrices are constructed in base b = 2, i.e. are elements of GF(2)^(m * m).

The program committee is chaired by Prof. Ulrich Langer. The current status of the programm and information about possible participation and funding possibilities can be found on the homepage http://www.ricam.oeaw.ac.at/sscm/ of the Special Semester or on the RICAM webpage http://www.ricam.oeaw.ac.at following the link "Special Radon Semester 2005". The long-term program of this Special Semester will involve a community of renowned researchers in the field of Computational Mathematics and Computational Mechanics. We encourage young scientists, who are in the early stages of their career (recent PhD's) but also graduate students to apply for participation. We are especially interested in applicants who intend to participate in the entire program (October 3 - December 16, 2005). However, the attendance of single special events or block seminars is also possible. Depending on need and qualification full or partial support for long-term participants is available. Applicants should give the name of three persons who can be contacted for reference. Applications with Personal and Scientific CV, list of publications, and a short statement about scientific interests related to the Special Semester should be sent to:

It features different sparse formats (dynamic and static), thread-safe matrix assembly, and multi-threaded matrix/vector operations. Operating on these matrices is a suite of Krylov methods and preconditioners (from the Templates book), dense matrix decompositions such as LU, QR, SVD (from the Jama project), and some simple eigenvalue/eigenvector solvers. It is available at http://www.math.uib.no/~bjornoh/jmp Both sources and classfiles are available. A preliminary users guide, reference documentation and some simple examples are also there.
