Hans Rademacher Courant after having enjoyed the excellent mathematics teaching of Hecke and Weyl . His initial mathematical interests were in the theory of real functions which he was taught by who also taught him the calculus of variations number theory with Landau but the outbreak of World War I in 1914 meant that Rademacher had to undertake research while serving in the German army, which he did from 1914 to 1916. Continuing his interest in the theory of real functions he completed his doctorate in 1916, written under 's supervision, and submitted a dissertation on single-valued mappings and mensurability. It examined some delicate problems in the theory of differentiation and integration of real-valued functions of real variables and it was in the same spirit as work being carried out by Denjoy and William Young . Rademacher was awarded his doctorate in 1917. He taught at a private secondary school in Wickersdorf for a short while, then at a similar school in Bischofstein, before being appointed to the University of Berlin as a

    • Background note Administrative information Background note After two years as a Privatdozent in Berlin, Rademacher moved to the University of Hamburg in 1922 as Ausserordentlicher Professor in mathematics, and although he enjoyed the intellectual environment there, he left three years later for Breslau, where he had been offered an ordinary professorship. By the time of his arrival there, his interests had begun to shift increasingly to number theory. After working on applications of Brun's sieve method and algebraic number fields, in 1928 he began work in the areas for which he became most widely known, modular forms and analytic number theory. A pacifist and member of the International League for the Rights of Men and the Breslau chapter of the Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft, Rademacher earned the unwanted attention of the Nazi Party, and in 1934 he was removed from his position. Residing briefly in a small town on the Baltic, he accepted the offer of a visiting Rockefeller Fellowship and moved to the United States in 1934 to work at the University of Pennsylvania, his second wife Olga Frey and their new son following one year later. Although he was offered only an assistant professorship at Penn, Rademacher remained at the university until his retirement in 1962. His 1936 proof of the asymptotic formula for the growth of the partition function might have been his most widely known work, addressing questions raised by mathematicians from Leibniz to Euler, but he contributed to algebraic number fields and Dedekind sums. His book

    Rolling with Reuleaux
Why is the cover of a manhole round? The usual answer is that a circular lid, unlike a square or hexagonal cover, won't fall through the opening. There's no way of orienting a round lid so that it fits through a hole of the same geometry but slightly smaller size. The circle works because it has a constant width. This width is defined as the distance between a pair of parallel lines touching the curve on opposite sides. For a circle, the width is simply the circle's diameter. That's why wheels and cylindrical rollers produce a smooth ride on a flat surface. Unlike a circle, an ellipse doesn't have the same width in all directions. So an elliptical lid could easily fall through an elliptical hole, and an object riding on elliptical rather than cylindrical rollers would jiggle up and down. However, the circle isn't the only curve of constant width. There is actually an infinite number of such curves, any one of which could form a manhole lid or the cross section of a roller that gives as smooth a ride as a cylinder.
    Reuleaux triangle.
