Pythagoras of Samos (ca. 560-ca. 480 BC)

Greek philosopher and mathematician who founded the mystic Pythagorean cult. The cult he founded was devoted to the study of numbers, which the Pythagoreans saw as concrete, material objects. They studied figurate numbers defining them as triangular numbers pentagonal numbers hexagonal numbers etc., based on the patterns that numbers of regularly spaced dots formed (Boyer 1968, p. 59-61). Pythagoras's biographer Proclus ascribed two specific mathematical discoveries to Pythagoras: construction of the regular solids (known today as the Platonic solids ), and the theory of proportionals. Pythagoras also investigated the ratios of lengths corresponding to musical harmonies, undertook studies in number theory, and developed methods of geometric proof. Among the results attributed to Pythagoras and his followers is the proof that the number Pythagoras's constant ) is irrational usually attributed to Hippasus Pythagoras developed a modern theory of vision much simpler than that of Plato . This theory maintained that light is emitted from luminous bodies, can suffer reflections, and causes the sensation of sight when it enters the eyes. He was the first Greek to realize that the morning star and evening star were both the planet

Pythagoras of Samos
(569-475 BC) Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos, Greece in 569 BC. He was a Greek religious leader and a philosopher who made developments in astronomy, mathematics, and music theories. He moved to Croton (a city in southern Italy) and started a religious and philosophical school there. He had many followers called the Pythagoreans. Pythagoras did much more than just discover what is now referred to as the Pythagorean Theorem. Pythagoras and his followers contributed to music, astronomy and mathematics. Pythagoras believed in secrecy and communalism, so distinguishing his work from the work of his followers is almost impossible. When joining Pythagoras's group, you had to remain silent for five years before you could contribute to the group. Some of their discoveries were right, and some were proven wrong in time. The most important idea of the Pythagoreans was that most things could be understood through math, which was important to math and science development.

The believers performed purification rites and followed moral, ascetic, and dietary rules to enable their souls to achieve a higher rank in their subsequent lives and thus eventually be liberated from the "wheel of birth." This belief also led them to regard the sexes as equal, to treat slaves humanely, and to respect animals. The highest purification was "philosophy," and tradition credits Pythagoras with the first use of the term. Heraclitus, in the next generation, speaks of his having carried scientific investigation ( historie sophistes Regarding the world as perfect harmony, dependent on the reality of number, he aimed at inducing humankind likewise to lead a harmonious life. Principles of mathematics and number formed the basis of all things. The Pythagoreans discovered irrational numbers, but cult members were sworn to secrecy concerning the discovery, as this was regarded as a threat to their system. He believed in the magic of the gods, was influenced by the cult that worshipped the god Dionysos, and he believed in Zeus, Apollo and other Greek gods and in the old and common notion of the transmigration of souls. He believed that the dust one can see aimlessly floating about in sunlight was pulled about by a spirit. But he also believed in self-examination, and he was interested in astronomy and mathematics and wished to apply observation and reason toward understanding the universe and its gods. He wished to combine his ideas on religion, astronomy and mathematics into a coherent view that would create a way of life beneficial to others. Pythagoras and his followers advanced astronomy by examining the movements of celestial bodies. They observed the shadow of the earth on the moon, and they made some calculations and concluded that the earth was a sphere. They also concluded that the earth was one of a group of planets. They blended these observations with Greek religion, concluding that the sun reflected light from a great fire at the center of the universe, which they called the throne of Zeus, around which, they believed, all else revolved.

Pythagoras and the Music of the Spheres
Explore your personalized, fine art astrology book! Our particular perspective of the universe our western cosmology can be traced back at least to Pythagoras of Samos (c.569 – c.475 BC). Although early authors attributed divine powers to him and treated him like a god, none of Pythagoras’ writings remain. His relevance to this book is that his model of the universe and his teachings have infused our culture for over 2000 years. In about 535 BC Pythagoras went to Egypt to study. But unlike many of his contemporaries who also studied in what was then the greatest center of learning in the world, he sought and was admitted to the Egyptian priesthood. Ten years later Persia invaded Egypt and Pythagoras was taken to Babylon as a prisoner. From there he mysteriously gained his freedom and returned to Samos around 520 BC. His own city didn’t care for the symbolic method of teaching Pythagoras had learned in Egypt, and after a few years he left to found a popular philosophical and religious school in southern Italy. The inner circle of his followers there was called the mathematikoi . Living permanently within the society, the

Pythagoras of Samos
Pythagoras of Samos was not only the first "pure mathematician" but also an important religious philosopher. He was trained in Egypt in the universal mysteries, which included math, geometry, astronomy, music, harmonics, and intervals, especially as they relate to states of consciousness. Pythagoras established an influential school in Croton (now in southern Italy) that had many followerscalled akousmatics and an inner circle of disciples known as mathematikoi . The mathematikoi Amos Bronson Alcott undoubtedly had Pythagoras in mind when he formed his Fruitlands commune in 1843.

Pythagoras of Samos was a Greek philosopher responsible for important developments in mathematics, astronomy and the theory of music. He left Samos because of the tyrant who ruled there and went to southern Italy about 532 BC. He founded a philosophical and religious school in Croton that had many followers.
Although the theorem now known as Pythagoras's theorem was known to the Babylonians 1000 years earlier he may have been the first to prove it. Of his actual work nothing is known. His school practiced secrecy and communalism making it hard to distinguish between the work of Pythagoras and that of his followers. His school made outstanding contributions to mathematics. Pythagoreans believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. This generalization stemmed from observations in music, mathematics and astronomy. In the Pythagorean tradition, astronomy is interpreted as magnitudes in motion, geometry as magnitudes at rest, arithmetic as numbers absolute, and music as numbers applied. I Pythagoras of Samos was born about 580 BC. He was the son of a grain merchant who been granted Samoan citizenship for bringing grain to the city at a time of famine. Pythagoras evolved a whole way of looking at life from counting beans. He founded a school of philosophy at Samos until a change of regime forced his exile to Crotona, an important Greek colony on the foot of Italy. Here his school flourished as a semi-monastic centre of study until it was suppressed in about 508BC. Pythagoras is said to have taken refuge in Metapontum where he died. His school was later sacked and his followers persecuted. An attitude imputing value to number will always be threatening to those who know the price of everything. His teachings were transmitted orally and his doctrine is only available through later writings. He is attributed with being the first to call himself philosophos , lover of wisdom, rather than sophos or wise man, and the first to use the term

A primer in sound for architects. Birdsong The ferocity of the dawn chorus is hard to imagine, unless one is for example a town dweller unexpectedly in the countryside in May in Provence, with the shutters half closed and the windows open after a good evening's human conversation. It is a loud sound and loud and complex in depth. First of all it is reverberant: woods are reverberant spaces especially to small sounds the size of a tree trunk. The bird and tree speak together. It is an acoustic map of the place : too complex to understand rationally, so complete that it is perfectly understood emotionally, the amount of life in nature. Immensely three dimensional: resonant, capable of successive layered listenings, as though one could fix on one particular sound and drift to another and get a scale of distance and occupation of each. philophony.com
