Ptolemy Soter

The large empire Alexander the Great had conquered was too big for one successor. One general was entrusted with Macedonia; another Thrace; and a third Syria. One of Alexander's favorite generals, Ptolemy Soter, was made governor of Egypt. The esteem was mutual as can be seen in Ptolemy Soter's having Alexander's body brought for burial to Egypt where it was permanently interred at the city Alexander had founded and named after himself. It is also possible to look at this gesture as politically motivated. The same can be said of Ptolemy Soter's marriage to the daughter of the most recent Egyptian pharaoh, Nectanebo II. Ptolemy Soter established his capital at Alexandria, founded a museum, and started collecting books for a library which, under his successors, became the center for scientific research and the best collection of Greek and Roman papyri in the world. He also initiated what was to become one of the wonders of the ancient world, the lighthouse off the coast of Alexandria on the island of Pharos.

Macedonian King of Egypt
Ptolemy (c. 360-284 B.C.) was son of the Macedonian nobleman Lagus and one of the inner circle of Alexander's commanders and advisers. He fought with distinction in India and wrote a history of Alexander's campaigns which was an important source for Arrian 's Anabasis. After Alexander's death he was appointed governor of Egypt and determined to maintain his independence of the central authority of Perdiccas . One of his first actions to this end was to divert to Egypt the cortege bearing the body of Alexander, which the army had intended to be buried in Macedonia. Ptolemy justified his acquisition of this precious relic, which was first interred with great magnificence at Memphis and subsequently at Alexandria, on the grounds that Alexander had wished to be buried at the oracle of Ammon. In 322 he allied himself with Antipater against Perdiccas and the pact was consolidated by his marriage to Antipater's daughter Eurydice. In 316 he joined forces with

Ptolemy of Alexandria is an author of a great geographical work in which he produced maps of various ancient countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa.  His map of Macedonia is clearly separated from Greece, Illyria, and Thrace. He also produced a map of Albania which in ancient times was in Asia, parallel to the map of Illyria in Europe, which makes it clear that the Albanians and the Illyrians had always been two separate nations. historyofmacedonia.org All rights reserved

Dateline: 08/07/99 Not much is known about the life of the Roman scholar Claudius Ptolemaeus who is more commonly known as Ptolemy. However, he was estimated to have lived from approximately 90 to 170 CE and he worked in the library at Alexandria from 127 to 150. He is known for his three scholarly works: the Almagest - which focused on astronomy and geometry, the Tetrabiblos - which focused on astrology, and, most importantly, Geography - which advanced geographic knowledge. Geography consisted of eight volumes. The first discussed the problems of representing a spherical earth on a flat sheet of paper (remember, ancient Greek and Roman scholars knew the earth was round) and provided information about map projections . The second through seventh volumes of the work were a gazetteer of sorts, as a collection of eight thousand places around the world. This gazetteer was remarkable for Ptolemy invented

On the left (below), we have the Sun and two planets; the blue one represents the Earth, and the red one represents Mars. None of this is drawn to scale. In the center, I have shown Mars' retrograde motion, the way it appears to go backward in the sky. This happens because the faster Earth passes the slower outer planet (in the left part of the diagram). And on the right, we have Ptolemy's attempt to explain retrograde motion with a fixed Earth, using epicycles. Both ideas (Copernicus' Sun-centered system, and Ptolemy's Earth-centered system) seem to work well. But the Sun-centered system is the true situation: Please enable Java for an interactive construction (with Cinderella). The above Java animation was created with Cinderella (a geometry program). Athanaeus (fl. c. 200 CE):
The Great Spectacle and Procession of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, 285 BCE
[Davis Intro:] When Ptolemy II Philadelphus became king of Egypt (285 B.C.), he celebrated his accession by a magnificent procession and festival at Alexandria. The following is only a part of the description of the very elaborate spectacle. The mere enumeration of all this pomp, power and treasure conveys a striking idea of the riches of the Ptolemaic kings, the splendor of their court, and the resources of their kingdom. History, Book V, Chap. 25: First I will describe the tent prepared inside the citadel, apart from the place provided to receive the soldiers, artisans, and foreigners. For it was wonderfully beautiful, and worth talking of. Its size was such that it could accommodate one hundred and thirty couches [for banqueters] arranged in a circle. The roof was upborne on wooden pillars fifty cubits high of which four were arranged to look like palm trees. On the outside of the pillars ran a portico, adorned with a peristyle on three sides with a vaulted roof. Here it was the feasters could sit down. The interior of this was surrounded with scarlet curtains; in the middle of the space, however, were suspended strange hides of beasts, strange both for their variegated color, and their remarkable size. The part which surrounded this portico in the open air was shaded by myrtle trees and laurels, and other suitable shrubs.

The Ptolemaic City
(323 BC - 30 BC)
Then, as now, she belonged not so much to Egypt as to the Mediterranean. E.M. Forster
Upon Alexander's death, no single successor emerged to claim his kingdom. Rather, the widespread territories were divided among several rulers. Egypt was the share of the most skilled of these: Ptolemy. He was Macedonian by birth, but witnessed the birth of Alexandria and wanted her to be the cultural and intellectual capital of the world. He ruled in 323 BC, reigned in 304 BC, and expanded his kingdom to include Cyrene (Lybia), Palestine, Cyprus, and others lands. His royal titles included King Soter (Savior), and Pharaoh. Under the reign of Soter, the golden age of Alexandria, the new capital of Egypt, started. His successor, Ptolemy II Philadelphus (King in 287 BC), was a less ambitious person. Unlike his father, he turned his back to military campaigns and focused on buiding Alexandria. He was more "Egyptian" than his father: he married his sister Arsinoe, a custom, then, widely accepted among Egyptians and despicable in the eyes of the Greeks. His son, Ptolemy III Euergetes (Well-doer), was full of will and motivation. He reigned in 246 BC, and was praised as a military leader and a supporter of science. He married his cousin Berenice. Their reign, marked the peak in Alexandria's glamor and fame.

He became king when an infant, and his mother, Cleopatra, was regent. After her death, Antiochus IV of Syria invaded Egypt, and Ptolemy was captured (170 B.C. ) at Pelusium. He was forced to share the rule with his wife (also his sister), Cleopatra, and his brother, Ptolemy Physcon (later Ptolemy VII ). Ptolemy Physcon ruled over Cyrene, Ptolemy Philometor over Egypt; trouble between the brothers ultimately caused the intervention of Rome. Ptolemy VI aided Demetrius II to gain the throne of Syria and was killed in battle with the rival claimant, Alexander Balas. His young son in theory succeeded to the throne and is sometimes called Ptolemy VII, but he was put to death as soon as Ptolemy Physcon (who is sometimes counted as Ptolemy VIII) could reach Egypt.

Ptolemy's Theorem and Interpolation Michael Lahanas The rectangle contained by the diagonals of any quadrilateral inscribed in a circle is equal to the sum of the rectangles contained by the pairs of opposite sides. Ptolemy Almagest Ptolemy's theorem refers to a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle. It is probably that actually Hipparchus discovered or knew much earlier Ptolemy's theorem (Tobias Dantzig even says it was a theorem of Apollonius). Unfortunately almost no work of Hipparchus survived and we know most about Hipparchus from Ptolemy's books and experts say that Ptolemy does not say always what was found originally by Hipparchus. Whatever the truth is the quadrilateral theorem today is known as Ptolemy's theorem. Ptolemy found that there is a constraint between the lengths of the sides and the diagonals of the quadrilateral. This is because only 3 points are necessary to define a circle and then some constraint is necessary for the additional points on the circle. Ptolemy found that for the inscribed quadrilateral described by four points, A, B, C, D have to satisfy: AC*BD = AB*CD + DA*BC i.e. the product of the diagonals is the sum of the products of opposite sides.

119. Ptolemy And Astronomy
ptolemy (or Claudius Ptolemaeus or Klaudios Ptolemaios) (?teµa? a?d?)lived in ptolemy was an astronomer, mathematician and geographer.
http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/PtolemyAstronomy.htm
Astronomy of Ptolemy Michael Lahanas Die Astronomie des Klaudius Ptolemaios Ptolemy created a universe that lasted a thousand years. Copernicus created a universe that lasted four hundred years. Einstein has created a universe, and I can't tell you how long it will last. George Bernard Shaw The orbit of a Planet, like Mars, around the Sun although it is an ellipse (here simplified by a circle) seems to bee more complex (green line) as seen from the Earth. The figure explains why it seems that the planet changes its direction. The lines connecting the Earth and Mars show the direction we have to see to observe Mars. As time passes these lines define the orbit of Mars as seen from the Earth. Mars looks as if it moves sometimes back changing its direction and moving on a loop. Planetary orbits are complex in a geocentric world model, like that of Ptolemy. For the Earth the orbit around the Sun is almost circular. Ptolemy was an astronomer, mathematician and geographer . He codified the Greek geocentric view of the universe, and rationalized the apparent motions of the planets as they were known in his time. Ptolemy synthesized and extended Hipparchus's system of epicycles and eccentric circles to explain his geocentric theory of the solar system. Ptolemy's system involved at least 80 epicycles to explain the motions of the Sun, the Moon, and the five planets known in his time. The circle was considered as the ideal orbit even if Hipparchus proposed an eccentric motion. It was only Kepler who finally showed that the planet orbits are elliptic and not spherical.
