Control and Automation Beyond the Century
Keynote Speech given at the Opening of the 14th IFAC World Congress in Beijing, China, P.R., by Jian Song, Chinese Academy of Sciences
It is a great honor for the Chinese science and engineering communities to host the 14th IFAC World Congress in Beijing, PRC, the last congress in this century. I would like, on behalf of the Chinese scientific and engineering communities, to express my warmest welcome to all of you, colleagues, friends and your spouses from all over the world. IFAC is 42 years old this year. Its Executive Council was established in 1957, and China was one of its founder members. I had to honor to attend the first Congress in Moscow in 1960. I still remember vividly that grand gathering, which finally pronounced the birth of IFAC to the world. Many great contributors to control theory in this century, including Norbert Wiener (1949), Lev Pontryagin (1961) and Rudolf Kalman (1961) attended the forum. Dr. H.S. Tsien (1954), a pioneer for engineering cybernetics was elected a Council member representing China. On that occasion, to the disappointment of many, Dr. Tsien was not able to be present at the Moscow Congress, because he had then been leading China's fledgling space program entrusted by the country's leadership.

Having a reading audience that could easily fit inside a telephone booth gives me the luxury of being able to reply to every bit of hate mail individually, and what a lovely surprise it was when I received a post from Mr/Ms (didn't say which) Blah Blah Blah to an old post about our mate Paul Munn. Thank you for your post BBB, you started out well by establishing some rapport with be with the old 'I understand how you feel' line, and although you completely missed the point of the original entry (i.e. that if you are in a customer service role, whether that be selling lawns or running for a seat in parliament, then your actions are always on show and you will be judged accordingly), your post was reasonably legible and most certainly full of the love of Christ - at least I'm assuming that's the kind of 'love' that you have stated you have for Mr Munn. If only you hadn't juxtaposed telling me to get a life with telling me that I need to be kind to people then I might have taken you more seriously. That said, Mr/Mrs president of the I-love-Paul-Munn fan club did raise a good point, namely that I am a grumpy old turd most of the time and I don't spend enough time in my life praising the people who, in my opinion, deserve it the most. To combat this for at least a brief moment and to show BBB that I can say some kind words, here is a brief snapshot of those (off the top of my head) who are definitely on my

Annotation This is a story of a sharp polemic in Russia on the eve of the 80th anniversary of A. N. Kolmogorov (1903–1987). April 25, 2003 is the date of the centenary of the birth of Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov. The personality and creative contribution of this genius man to the world science and Russian culture are so eminent that the tiniest bits of recollections of anything related to him might be of avail to those pondering over life and its principles. For many years I have heard requests of my friends and colleagues to present for the public my whatever partial overview of the circumstances and events invoked by Merzlyakov's article “The Right of Memory” and in particular the polemic between A. D. Alexandrov and L. S. Pontryagin this article had stirred up. The story to tell is rather ugly and to plunge into it again, reviving the bygones, brings about much discontent and displeasure. Merzlyakov's article appeared on February 17, 1983 in the newspaper

MATHEMATICS AND WAR Draft Essay for Hutchinson Companion Encyclopedia of Mathematics Bernhelm Booss-Bavnbek, Roskilde University (Denmark) In his farewell Anniversary Address (30 November 1995) as leaving President of the Royal Society, Sir Michael F. Atiyah (1929-) devotes quite some lines to the interrelations between science and military. He emphasizes that "the atomic bomb was unique in many respects, particularly in the speed with which a discovery in fundamental physics was put to use... No longer would scientists, conducting pure research for its own sake, be ignored on the grounds that their work was not relevant to the real world. The ivory tower was no longer a sanctuary..." He expresses his delight about "the large number of British scientists who publicly refused to have anything to do with the infamous 'Star Wars' research of the Reagan era. The British Government of the time encouraged our scientists to apply for American funds for this purpose, but many refused because they believed the whole project was scientifically doubtful, economically wasteful and politically destabilising." We consider here mathematics as a bellicose art. We address:

History of Control
Control Systems Timeline
A modern view of control systems is one of using feedback to control a system regardless of any external disturbances. It is this durability that explains why control systems are all around us in modern technology. Control Systems have widespread applications in a number of different fields however they are barely noticed, but without them many of today’s technological advancements would not be possible. They are found in our homes, cars, factories, communication, medical, transport, military, and space systems to name a few. The evolution of the control system is a long and interesting one, dating back to around 300 B.C. From then on control systems have played an essential part in the development of wide variety of technology. "One interesting aspect in the history of technology is the way in which an innovation was developed. In many cases, inventions were the result of numerous people making small advances until a critical point was reached". (Bernstein and Bushnell 2002 p22) ([38]). There are many examples of this throughout the history of control with inventions being improved and adapted for different tasks. A couple of these examples are listed below:
  • The centrifugal governor began in the works of windmills, but found itself in the control of steam engines.

The Turing definition of machine intelligence
by
Stephen Goulter
Dept of Applied Mathematics, University of Sydney In this talk, I discuss this definition, in terms of its potential, its relation to creativity, and to its self consistency. Issues of symbiosis, cooperation and duality arise. The issue of how computer process might aid creativity, and so provide a form of stimulus to assist creative human thought, is discussed. A theoretical schema is outlined by which this might be done in an algorithmic way. It is argued then, that new forms of intelligence and creativity, which are specifically or dominatingly algorithmic, could be defined and used precisely and algorithmically. In this way, the clear distinction which is usually made between human and machine process, is seen to be quite artificial in some foreseeable ways, in some contexts.
