Pontryagin duality
In mathematics , in particular in harmonic analysis and the theory of topological groups Pontryagin duality explains the general properties of the Fourier transform . It places in a unified context a number of observations about functions on the real line or on finite abelian groups:
  • Suitably regular complex-valued periodic functions on the real line have Fourier series and that these functions can be recovered from their Fourier series; Suitably regular complex-valued functions on the real line have Fourier transforms that are also functions on the real line and, just as for periodic functions, these functions can be recovered from their Fourier transforms; and Complex-valued functions on a finite abelian group have discrete Fourier transforms which are functions on the dual group , which is a (non-canonically) isomorphic group. Moreover any function on a finite group can be recovered from its discrete Fourier transform.

Lev Semenovich Pontryagin
Lev Semenovich Pontryagin Russian: 3 September 3 May ) was a Soviet Russian mathematician . He was born in Moscow and lost his eyesight in a primus stove explosion when he was 14. Despite his blindness he was able to become a mathematician due to the help of his mother Tatyana Andreevna who read mathematical books to him. He made major discoveries in a number of fields of mathematics, including the more geometric parts of topology He worked on duality theory for homology while still a student. He went on to lay foundations for the abstract theory of the Fourier transform , now called Pontryagin duality . In topology he posed the basic problem of cobordism theory . This led to the introduction around 1940 of a theory of characteristic classes , now called Pontryagin classes , designed to vanish on a manifold that is a boundary Later in his career he worked in optimal control theory. His

When Petipa fell ill, Ivanov created the choreography for The Nutcracker (1892) to the music of Tchaikovsky. After Tchaikovsky's death, the previously unsuccessful Swan Lake (1877) was revised with choreography by Petipa and Ivanov, each doing alternate acts in varying styles.     Mathematicians and light bulbs ISSN 0110-0025 CENTREFOLD BOB LONG Robert Stephen Long is a very good candidate for a long-service medal for his contributions to mathematics in this country, and his career illustrates with great clarity the development of the subject in the past half-century. With the retirement of Sadler, and the arrival of Derek Lawden as HoD, the atmosphere if not the resources for research improved a great deal, and through the 1960s Bob wrote and published a series of papers, largely on one of the topics that Lawden had pioneered, that of orbital transfer. He was promoted to a readership in 1968. Throughout his time in the department, Bob took more than his share of administrative work, and of the teaching of first-year and engineering mathematics courses, and is rightly remembered for his patience and thoroughness. On his retirement at the end of the 1980s, Bob became involved in (perhaps "was inveigled into" suits the case better) the NZ International Mathematical Olympiad movement, and set up the weekly coaching sessions which are open to candidate olympians in Christchurch. He is still in charge, and the number of this country's best young mathematicians who have passed through his hands, and who owe a real debt to him for patient instruction, encouragement and inspiration, grows by the year.

    Alexandre Camanho Quando uma explos£o acidental deixou o russo Lev Semenovich Pontryagin (1908-1988) completamente cego, todos acharam que o adolescente de 14 anos n£o poderia mais sonhar com estudos e com uma brilhante carreira na antiga Uni£o Sovi©tica. Mas sua m£e Tatyana Andreevna Pontryagina n£o pensava assim. Ela passou a ser os olhos do filho sempre que ele precisava. A fam­lia Pontryagin n£o tinha recursos para dar a Lev uma boa educa§£o, muito menos o acompanhamento que suas condi§µes especiais exigiam. Ent£o a m£e tomou para si a responsabilidade de ajudar o filho a enfrentar todas as dificuldades de aprendizagem. A tarefa n£o era nada f¡cil para ela e ficou cada vez mais desafiadora   medida em o rapaz progredia nos estudos matem¡ticos. Tatyana n£o sabia a linguagem de equa§µes e f³rmulas e s³ se comunicava em russo. Ela ent£o aprendeu l­nguas estrangeiras para poder ler artigos internacionais para seu filho. Quanto aos sinais e s­mbolos matem¡ticos que apareciam nos textos, a m£e s³ podia descrevª-los para Lev. Por exemplo: o sinal de "contido" … na express£o A … B era descrito como uma "curva voltada para a direita". E Pontryagin entendia que o conjunto A © um subconjunto do conjunto B ou que o conjunto A est¡ contido no conjunto B.

    Restoration of the Russian Academy of Sciences In 1991, in connection with the changes that occurred in the political, social and economic situation in the  country, including the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Russian Federation, the Academy received a new status in 1991 and was given back its old name: the Russian Academy of Sciences. [Decree of the President of Russian Federation of December 2, 1991]. Academician Yuri S. Osipov was elected President of the Academy.
    The scientists of the Academy made great contributions to the development of practically all directions of modern science. Developing the traditions of national scientific schools, the researchers of the Academy enriched many areas of theoretical and applied mathematics. Studies of Ivan M. Vinogradov and his school into the theory of numbers, as well as research into the theory of functions carried out by the school of Nikolai N. Luzin gained wide international recognition. New approaches were proposed in the theory of differential equations and functional analysis, in the theory of probabilities, algebra, topology, mathematical logic, and in the mathematical theory of optimal control (Andrei N. Kolmogorov, Sergei L. Sobolev, Ivan G. Petrovsky, Lev S. Pontryagin, Anatoly I. Maltsev, and others). Substantial contributions to the development of applied mathematics were made by Mikhail A. Lavrentyev, Mstislav V.Keldysh, and others. A number of problems related to mathematical applications in mechanics, economics, physics and technology were successfully solved.
