Poncelet had been a pupil of Gaspard Monge , the originator of modern synthetic geometry, but Poncelet also used analytical geometry and contributed greatly to the development of the relatively new synthetic (projective) geometry. He became the centre of controversy over the principle of continuity, and developed the circular points at infinity.
Poncelet developed a new model of a variable counterweight drawbridge, which he described and publicized in 1822. His most important technical contributions were concerned with hydraulic engines, such as Poncelet's water wheel, with regulations and with dynamometers, as well as in devising various improvements to his own fortification techniques.

French mathematician and engineer who was one of the founders of modern projective geometry. Jean-Victor Poncelet was a pupil of Monge. As a lieutenant of engineers in 1812, he took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign, in which he was abandoned as dead at Krasnoy and imprisoned at Saratov. He returned to France in 1814. During his imprisonment Poncelet studied projective geometry and wrote , 2 vol. (1862-64; "Applications of Analysis and Geometry"). This work was originally planned as an introduction to his celebrated (1822; "Treatise on the Projective Properties of Figures"), for which Poncelet is regarded as one of the greatest projective geometers. His development of the pole and polar lines associated with conics led to the principle of duality and a dispute over priority for its discovery. His principle of continuity, a concept designed to add generality to synthetic geometry, led to the introduction of imaginary points. From 1815 to 1825 Poncelet was occupied with military engineering at Metz, and from 1825 to 1835 he was professor of mechanics at the

PONCELET JEAN VICTOR (1788-1867) Militaire et mathématicien français
- né le 1er Juillet 1788 à Metz, Lorraine, France
- décédé le 22 Décembre 1867 à Paris, France Dans son grand traité de géométrie projective, Poncelet étudie les propriétés des figures qui sont invariantes par projection centrale ; cette méthode apparaît comme étant un outil très efficace : elle permet à Poncelet d’établir les principales propriétés des coniques et des quadriques et de traiter la théorie des polygones. Il énonce aussi le " principe de continuité ", qui affirme que les propriétés d’une figure, invariantes par certaines transformations, ne sont pas modifiées lorsque la figure prend une position limite. À l’aide de ce principe, Poncelet est amené à considérer les points et droites qui disparaissent à l’infini ou deviennent imaginaires ;
il élabore la théorie des transformations par polaires réciproques et le "principe de dualité".

    Projektiivinen geometria Projektiivisessa geometriassa tutkitaan suorien ja tasojen keskinäistä leikkaamista kiinnittämättä huomiota mitallisiin ominaisuuksiin. Tämänkin geometrian alan historia on pitkä. Merkittäviä nimiä ovat Pappos Aleksandrialainen 300-luvulta, ranskalaiset Girard Desargues ja Blaise Pascal 1600-luvulta, samoin ranskalaiset Charles-Julien Brianchon ja Jean-Victor Poncelet 1800-luvun alusta. Esimerkkinä projektiivisen geometrian lauseista olkoon seuraava Pappoksen lause : Olkoon annettuna kaksi suoraa tasossa; toiselta valitaan pisteet A B C ja toiselta pisteet A B C . Olkoon piste R suorien A B ja A B leikkauspiste, piste S vastaavasti suorien B C ja B C leikkauspiste ja piste T suorien C A ja C A . Tällöin pisteet R S ja T ovat samalla suoralla. This agreement was signed on March 11, 2002, at the French Embassy in Moscow by the Director of the CNRS, Madame G.Berger and the President of the IUM, professor Yu.Ilyashenko in the presence of the Ambassador, Monsieur C.Blanchemaison and several eminent personalities of the French and Russian scientific world. Three institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Steklov Institute (MIAN), the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute (TsEMI) and the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (IPPI) are associated to this agreement. The aim of the Laboratory is to bring together into a joint team several French and Russian researchers working on a wide spectrum of mathematical problems, ready to interact with the other sciences. The lab is at present a small one (8-10 collaborators) and has a modest budget, but its founders expect that it will have an influence far surpassing the direct scientific contribution of its permanent staff: it is meant to function as a meeting place for visitors coming from France (not only from Paris) and from Russia (not only from Moscow) for conferences , seminars, and colloquia, or for short-term visits.

With these notions he found many new theorems, in particular for conic sections. But the one of them, which concerns polygons which are at the same time inscribed in a conic and circumscribed to another, exercised a real fascination on all mathematicians who became aware of it, and still exercises that fascination. Besides its beauty, another reason is that there is no simple proof of it. Jacobi, to deeply inderstand it, discovered that it is the elliptic functions which are at the root of it. We will present in the lecture few different proofs of the theorem, quote the answers to difficult questions of finding explicit formulas, questions which stem out directly from the theorem. There is no year today where does not appear
