Giovanni Poleni
Marquess, physicist, and antiquarian; b. at Venice, 23 Aug., 1683; d. at Padua, 14 Nov., 1761; son of Marquess Jacopo Poleni. He studied the classics, philosophy, theology, mathematics, and physics. He was appointed, at the age of twenty-five, professor of astronomy at Padua. In 1715 he was assigned to the chair of physics, and in 1719 he succeeded Nicholas Bernoulli as professor of mathematics. As an expert in hydraulic engineering he was charged by the Venetian Senate with the care of the waters of lower Lombardy and with the constructions necessary to prevent floods. He was also repeatedly called in to decide cases between sovereigns whose states were bordered by water-ways. His knowledge of architecture caused Benedict XIV to call him to Rome in 1748 to examine the cupola of St. Peter's, which was rapidly disintegrating. He promptly indicated the repairs necessary. He also wrote a number of antiquarian dissertations. In 1739 the Academy of Sciences in Paris made him a member, and later the societies of London, Berlin, and St. Petersburg did the same. The city of Padua elected him as magistrate, and after his death erected his statue by Canova. Venice also honoured him by striking a medal. ANON

Giovanni Poleni studied first philosophy and then theology in Venice. He began a judicial career but, after being introduced to mathematics and science by his father, he went on to accept the chair of astronomy at the University of Padua in 1709. In 1715 he became, in addition to his astronomy chair, professor of physics. Poleni was invited to investigate the problem of hydraulics relating to the irrigation of Lower Lombardy. He was appointed to the chair of mathematics at Padua in 1719 which had been vacated by Nicolaus(II) Bernoulli . In 1738 he acquired a laboratory to conduct physics experiments and began to lecture on this topic. Poleni worked on hydraulics, physics, astronomy and archaeology. He conducted meteorological observations. His work was honoured by the award of a number of prizes, for calculating the distance travelled by a ship, for a study of ship's anchors, and for a study of cranes and windlasses. Teatro di Filosofia Sperimentale
Giovanni Poleni, scientist and philologist, became in 1739 the first professor of Experimental Philosophy at the University of Padua and he founded in 1740 his Teatro di Filosofia Sperimentale, the first physics cabinet in an Italian University.
At present, the Museum preserves about a hundred instruments from Poleni's collection. Let us mention for instance the beautiful macchina divulsoria, a device intended for studying the tensile strength of materials. Poleni used this instrument when he was asked by Pope Benedetto XIV to examine, together with the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, the condition of Saint Peter's dome in Rome, which seemed to be on the verge of collapsing. Poleni concluded that large iron rings were needed to strengthen the dome and he carried out experiments with his divulsoria in order to determine the size of the rings, which were finally fixed between 1743 and 1748.

UNIVERSITA' DEGLI STUDI DI PADOVA italian version Museum of the History of Physics Padua, Italy About Poleni's Cabinet of Physics: "…je ne connois guère de plus beau cabinet de physique…" (J. de La Lande, Voyage en Italie, 1790) T he University of Padua possesses a remarkable Collection of scientific instruments from the XVIth to the XXth century. The Collection, which counts around 1500 pieces, constitutes an important evidence of the glorious scientific past of the city. T A s for the heart of the Collection, it consists of the instruments collected by Giovanni Poleni for his "Teatro di Filosofia Sperimentale", the first university physics lecture room A fter Poleni, the professors who succeeded him continued to enrich the University Collection with instruments made in Padua or bought from important european workshops. In particular, the Museum possesses instruments connected with famous XIXth and XXth century scientists like Angelo Bellani, Leopoldo Nobili, Giovanni Battista Amici, Augusto Righi and Bruno Rossi. By studying these instruments, one may re-examine interesting aspects of the italian science of the last centuries. T he Museum of the History of Physics therefore constitutes a relevant material evidence of the scientific prestige, throughout the centuries, of the University of Padua and, by preserving and promoting its historic scientific instruments, the Museum can substancially contribute to the spread of scientific culture.
