When most people think of lighting and lamps, they think of the incandescent light bulb developed by Thomas Edison and other inventors. Incandescent light bulbs work by using electricity and a filament. Heated by electricity, the filament inside the light bulb exhibits resistance that results in high temperatures that causes the filament to glow and emit light. Arc or vapor lamps work in a different way (fluorescents fall under this category), the light is not created from heat, the light is created from the chemical reactions that occur when electricity is applied to different gases enclosed in a glass vacuum chamber.

Did You Know? Julius Plucker Julius Plucker first described cathode rays in 1859. At the time he was a professor of physics at the University of Bonn. When he first described some of the properties of Cathode Rays he was involved in studies around discharges in Geissler tubes. In his studies he noted that the column of luminescence, originating from the cathode was striated. He also discovered that when he used a magnet he could focus diffused light emerging from the cathode. He later published a paper noting that the particles could be deflected by a magnet and a moving phosphorescence spot could be produced on glass. He provided no name for the rays but it turned out Plucker was describing properties of cathode rays. Special SMPTE Toronto Panel Report - February 6, 1998

Society Of Motion Picture And Television Engineers Discusses The Future Of Television at Toronto Conference
By Brad Fortner, Rogers Communications Centre, Ryerson Polytechnic University With the digital convergence occurring across much of the broadcast communications sector a lively panel discussion on "The Future of Television" highlighted SMPTE's 32 nd Advanced Motion Imaging Conference held in Toronto. Moderated by Charles Poynton, the panel featured seven prominent industry engineers currently working in diverse areas of broadcasting. They presented diverse opinions on technological issues focusing primarily on the delivery of digital television. It provided a unique opportunity to survey the landscape in this rapidly changing field.

The History of the CRT The Cathode Ray Tube and Electronic television is the picture tube found in modern monitors. A cathode ray tube or CRT is a specialized vacuum tube in which images are produced when an electron beam strikes a phosphorescent surface. Television sets, computers, oscilloscopes, automated teller machines, arcade games, video cameras, monitors, and radar displays are common examples. Phosphor screens using multiple electron beams allow CRTs to display millions of colors. CRT Timeline 1859 - Julius Plucker, a German mathematician and physicist, first identifies cathode rays.
1878 - Sir William Crookes was able to prove cathode rays existed by providing working examples cathode ray tubes with the Crookes tube. His invention proved to be the prototype for future CRT's.
1897 - CRT oscilloscope invented by German, Karl Ferdinand Braun. Called the Braun Tube, it morphed into television and radar tubes in modern history.
1929 - the kinescope cathode ray tube was invented by Vladimir Kosma Zworykin. It formed some of the first television systems.

    59. !GROUP THEORY!

A History of GroupTheory William Komp History of Mathematics Dr. Davitt
This raises the question of traits do all groups have in common, and as an extension on to this what additional traits do all fields share. There have been many interpretations of the structure of groups. H. Weber's notion of a group has for axioms, but it turns out that one of his axioms is unnecessary when compared to the modern definition. The modern definition of a group is as follows:
Given any set A, we say that A forms a groupunder the binary operation @ if and only if it satisfies the followingfour criteria.
    I) Given any two elements in A, then their product under the binary operation @ will be in A [closure property]
II) Given three elements in A, these three elements will satisfy the associative property.
III) In A, there exists an element such thatthe product of this element with any other element in A, namely ©,will generate the element © back again.
IV) There exists an element ©' in A suchthat the product of © and ©' will give the element mentionedin III.(Gallian) Group Theory has enormous potential in practical applications in areas other than that of mathematics. In mathematics, group theory is the basis of real analysis. Namely, the set of R, the real numbers, must be complete and satisfy all of theproperties of an ordered field (Sherwood 14-19). This provides thenecessary algebra to begin proving and developing axiomatically all ofCalculus. The analogy can also be made with the complex numbers, with some increased complexity in the area of complex analysis. The propertiesof a field are very similar to those of a group.

    Plücker
Discovered on November 15, 1998 by Paul G. Comba at Prescott, Arizona, asteroid 29643, Plücker, was named for German mathematician and physicist Julius Plücker (1801-1868), who put forth the seminal proposition that the fundamental element in geometry need not be the point but could be the straight line, and that a duality exists between points and lines. Julius Plücker
Astrologically, asteroid Plücker seems to indicate Frank Abagnale of Catch Me If You Can fame has Plucker conjunct Hylonome (popular appeal) and square 1996 TO66 (vision). Famed Texas flim-flam artist Billie Sol Estes has Plucker sextile Stentor (in a loud voice) and square the Sun (to shine) and Don Quixote (taking on the system). Ivan Boesky (born March 6, 1937, in Detroit) has Plucker sextile Thersander (getting what you think you deserve), square Venus (values) and Nessus (predation), and trine Asbolus (bad advice given"Greed is all right"). "Junk-bond king" Michael Milken (born July 4, 1946, in Los Angeles) has Plucker conjunct Ixion (bad karma), sextile Mercury (speech, writing), quintile Saturn (work), square Odysseus (schemes), and opposite Cruithne (in touch with one's roots).
