May, 2005 - Noel P. Wilkins - noel.wilkins@nuigalway.ie I came across your article on the history of Bridgeton when I was looking for information on John Playfair and Alexander Nimmo. You mention a Mr. Nimmo sinking a sandpit near Newlands house. Can you indicate a date for this? The Nimmo I am interested in was Alexander Nimmo, 1783 - 1832 (born in Kirkcaldy) and I was wondering if "your" Nimmo could also be "my" Nimmo who was an engineer? Unless your man worked during about 1814 to 1832 it is unlikey to be my subject. Can you enlighten me and let me know? Best wishes , Yours sincerely, Noel P. Wilkins Updated for 1st August, 2005. I want to congratulate the Minutemen for their great program to reduce illegal border crossings. They have obviously made a great reduction in the number of illegals entering this country, and hopefully other states will follow their example. I wish to support them in any way possible, and would be proud to travel there and donate time to this very worthy cause. John Playfair

First edition of this rare and outstanding work on the mining of Brazil. This was the first major book to provide a history of the discoveries of diamonds and gems in that country. The book is notable for the author's research primarily of gold, but also on gemstones such as diamonds, topaz, amethyst, tourmaline, and others. Of special interest is the chapter on the diamond mines, complete with statistics on their mining methods, administration, character, form and occurrences. Another valuable chapter describes gold and diamond smuggling and other illegal activities.

Mrs. William Playfair was exhibited to great acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1887 and at the 1888 Paris Salon. The sitter (nee Emily Kitson, 1841-1916) is shown wearing a sumptnous yellow satin gown and a fur-lined, dark green velvet cloak. Set against an abstract background of deep red, she is ready to step out wearing distinctive jewels and carrying a fashionable fan and evening bag. As the fully mature forty-six-year-old wife of England's most prominent obstetrician and the mother of five children Emily Playfair appears solid and secure in her position and wealth. Yet she is also shown by Sargent as disarmingly relaxed, smiling with twinkling eyes and an open moutha pose unusual for a woman of her social standing." Traditional Fine Art Online

A letter from David McKibbin dated September 1966 (from the Library of the Boston Athenaeum) to Mr. Fraad notes, "Your Spanish Barracks which was given to Dr. Playfair in 1906 was I think painted in 1903 when Sargent was at Santiago de Compostela, for the scene is the Hospital Real there, where a whole series of soldiers convalescing was made. These pictures are variously called Hospital at Granada, Seville, etc. but there is no doubt that this is one of the older southern courts in the S.de C Hos.Real."

Administrative/Biographical History
The Playfair family originated in the Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire, around Errol, St Madoes and Kinfauns. They seem to have been tenant farmers or tradesmen until the eighteenth century when they diversified into the church and other professions as well as acquiring land in Bendochy, Coupar Angus, Perthshire. The bulk of these papers originate from Sir Robert Lambert Playfair (1828-1899). He was in the Indian Political Service before becoming Consul-General of Algeria. Born in St Andrews, third son of Surgeon -General George Playfair, he was educated at St Andrews and Addiscombe Military College before joining the Madras Artillery in 1846. He travelled extensively from Aden to Egypt before his appointment by Sir James Outram as Assistant Political Agent in Aden in 1854. He moved to Zanzibar as Political Agent in 1862 where he remained until his retirement from the army as Lieutenant-Colonel and his appointment as Consul-General of Algeria in 1867. He served in Algeria from 1867-1897 (Tunis was added in 1885) and was made KCMG in 1886. He retired to St Andrews and received an LLD from St Andrews University in 1899. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical and Zoological Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. His works include:

ARCHITECT More than any other architect, Playfair was the man who earned Edinburgh its label, "the Athens of the North". His classical buildings, many on dramatic sites, adorn the city, and lend the physical environment a stature and dignity that is unique in Britain. Playfair was the leading influence in the shaping of Edinburgh's architectural soul. He was born in London, the son of the architect James Playfair, and as a boy came to live in Edinburgh with an uncle, Professor John Playfair. On qualifying as an architect, Playfair built a considerable private practice in Edinburgh before designing, in 1820, Royal Terrace, Carlton Terrace and Regent Terrace, in the New Town . His most important works include the Royal Scottish Academy, the National Gallery of Scotland, New College and Assembly Hall, the Royal College of Surgeons, Donaldson's Hospital, Advocates' Library and the National Monument on Calton Hill. He also enlarged the Old College of Edinburgh University following the death of Robert Adam

He was a dancing master and theatre owner, a scholar of Greek and Latin, a poet and translator. But for our sakes, he is remembered as a pioneer in the making of that indispensable tool for the modern traveller, the road atlas. Despite being ridiculed by English poets and literary standard-makers John Dryden in MacFlecknoe and Alexander Pope in the Dunciad, Ogilby was put in charge of the poetic part of the coronation ceremony of Charles II by the king himself. Following the great fire that destroyed most of the city of London in 1666, Ogilby set up a printing shop, calling himself the "king's cosmographer and geographical printer." He produced many notable, illustrated volumes including Britannia...A Geographical and Historical Description of the Principal Roads thereof (1675), considered a landmark in accurate road description.
