John Playfair
Geologist, physicist and mathematician. Born in Benvie, Playfair studied at St. Andrews. Having failed to gain professorships at Aberdeen and St. Andrews he became a parish minister. However he was offered the Chair of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh in 1785 and later moved to the Chair of Natural Philosophy (1805), which he held until his death. He is perhaps best known for his work in geomorphology, realising that large rock could be transported as part of the process of glaciation, and was regarded by his students as an excellent teacher. Playfair popularised the the work of James Hutton (1726-97) with his publication Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of The Earth (1802). Playfair enthusiastically supported the extension of the Observatory on Edinburgh's Calton Hill and would undoubtedly have been Astronomer Royal for Scotland had the position existed when he was alive. Talbot Rice (1954) says:
"The wide learning, the calm intellect and the clear thought, so apparent in all his writings, also marked his lectures. He was, according to one of his many illustrious pupils, 'a charming teacher, so simple, unaffected and sincere in manner, so chaste in style, so clear in demonstration'. By consolidating the learning of past generations and collating the discoveries and theories of his own time, he gave a comprehensive and unified presentation of the subjects he professed and thus laid the basis for future constructive researches in the fields of mathematics and natural philosophy."

PLAYFAIR, JOHN b. Benvie, near Dundee, Scotland, 10 March 1748; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, 20 July 1819), mathematics, physics, geology.
Playfair was the eldest son of the Reverend James Playfair. At the age of fourteen he went to the University of St. Andrews, primarily to qualify for the ministry, but he also showed remarkable mathematical ability. In 1769 he left St. Andrews for Edinburgh. On the death of his father in 1772, he succeeded him in the living of Benvie, which he resigned in 1782 to become tutor for a private family. From 1785 to 1805 Playfair held a professorship of mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. He edited the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for many years, and most of his papers appeared in that periodical. They were concerned almost entirely with mathematics, physics, and biographies. His

Playfair (1748-1819) has been described as being Hutton's Boswell (Gould, p.15). As the DNB states: "Playfair's principal mathematical work was his 'Elements of Geometry,' 8vo, Edinburgh, 1795 ... but the work which will always be most prominently associated with his name is the 'Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth,' 8vo, Edinburgh, 1802, on which he spent five years. This work is a model of purity of diction, simplicity of style, and clearness of explanation. It not only gave popularity to Hutton's theory, but helped to create the modern science of geology."

Architect, William Henry Playfair was born in London in July 1789, the younger son of architect, James Playfair. On the death of his father in 1794, he was sent to Edinburgh to live with his uncle, Professor John Playfair, mathematician and geologist, and a leading figure in the Edinburgh Enlightenment. Playfair's uncle arranged for his education. Following his father's profession, Playfair studied under William Starke. After working in London for Robert Smirke and James Wyatt 1813-15, and a brief visit to France, he launched his practice in Edinburgh and won the competition in 1815 for the completion of Robert Adam's scheme for Edinburgh University, designing the interior of the Old Quad (1819-27). While Playfair's most important works were executed in the Greek revivalist or classical style, he was also competent in other styles, for example, the Jacobean Donaldson's Hospital (1842-54). He also built country houses and villas in the Italianate style, for example, Belmont (1828), designed for Lord MacKenzie in Edinburgh.
