John Playfair March 10 July 20 ) was a Scottish scientist Playfair was professor of mathematics and later professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh University . He is perhaps best known for his book Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth ), which was a summary of the work of James Hutton . It was through this that Hutton's principal of uniformitarianism , later taken up by Charles Lyell , first reached a wide audience. John Playfair. In Playfair created an alternative formulation of Euclid 's parallel postulate called Playfair's axiom

Edinburgh, Scotland, June 3, 1726, d. Edinburgh, March 26, 1797] After a successful career as a businessman, Hutton spent nearly 20 years as an amateur geologist before, in 1785, summarizing his views in Theory of the Earth: Earth is very old and present-day geological structures formed slowly by processes observable today, such as erosion and deposition. His phrase describing Earth as having "no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end" and related ideas came to be known as uniformitarianism . He was initially attracted to chemistry; he entered the legal profession at the Univ. of Edinburgh; turned to medicine, as it closely resembled chemistry; and then became a farmer to allow him to study rocks and be able to pursue his interests in geology. He formulated controversial theories of the origin of the earth and of atmospheric changes (see uniformitarianism ) that paved the way to modern geological science. After 1768, he moved to Edinburgh to discuss his ideas with other scholars including the physician and mathematician John Playfair, and chemist Joseph Black. Hutton started a controversy by standing against the popular Neptunists (rocks developed in a great flood) and the Plutonists (all rocks are of igneous origin) schools, proposing the theory of uniformity of causes, concluding that the earth's history can be explained by observing the geological forces now at work, because these forces are identical to the ones that operated in the past. By studying the Devonian Old Red Sandstone along the Scotland coast, he discovered that sedimentary rocks originated from, not a single flood, but a series of successive floods; noted that the intrusion of igneous rocks were distinct from sedimentary deposits; recorded the gradual actions of geomorphic processes; and discussed the lengths of geologic time. His ideas influenced Charles

John Playfair In 1769, having finished his courses at the university, Mr Playfair lived for some time in Edinburgh, in the enjoyment of the very select literary society of the period. "It would appear," says his biographer, [His nephew, by whom a Life of Mr Playfair was prefixed to an edition of his works, published in 1822.] From his thirst after knowledge being untainted by political or local prejudices, Playfair had early turned himself to the important discoveries of the continental algebraists, and was the first man of eminence to introduce them to British notice. He perceived the prejudices entertained on the subject in England, extensive discoveries of his own. The period between 1797 and 1802 was occupied by Mr Playfair in preparing his Illustrations, and in 1803 his biographical sketch of Hutton was published in the Society Transactions. In 1805 he quitted the mathematical chair, and succeeded professor John Robison in that of natural philosophy; during the same year his mother died at the age of eighty-five, and he retired along with a younger brother, his youngest sister, and two nephews, to Burntisland, that he might devote the summer to uninterrupted preparation for the duties of his new class. In the controversy with the clergymen of Edinburgh, regarding his successor to the chair of mathematics, he took an active part. "Lord Rodney himself, however, was more easily convinced, and in the action off Martinico, in April, 1780, the original plan seemed regulated by the principles of the Naval Tactics. "It was in the beginning of this year, that the (Essay on) Naval Tactics appeared in print, though, for more than a year before, copies of the book had been in circulation among Mr Clerk’s friends. [Fifty copies were printed of this edition, and distributed in a private way. The work was not published for sale till 1790. The edition of that year is therefore styled the first, and that of 1804, the second "Lord Rodney, who had done so much to prove the utility of this system, in conversation never concealed the obligation he felt to the author of it. Before going out to take the command of the fleet in the West Indies, he said one day to Mr Dundas, afterwards lord Melville, ‘There is one Clerk, a countryman of yours, who has taught us how to fight, and appears to know more of the matter than any of us. If ever I meet the French fleet, I intend to try his way.’

John Playfair was the eldest son of the Reverend James Playfair, minister of Benvie, a small town near Dundee (then in Perthshire, now in Tayside), Scotland. He was educated by his father at home until the age of fourteen, when he was sent to the University of St Andrews to study for a general degree with the aim of entering the Church. Playfair was awarded a scholarship to the University in 1762, and there his aptitude and keenness to study gained him both the respect and friendship of his professors. His progress in the mathematical sciences was so rapid that the professor of natural philosophy (physics was still called natural philosophy in St Andrews when I [EFR] studied it in the 1960s), Professor Wilkie, when suffering from an illness, found him to be the person best qualified to deliver his lectures on natural philosophy. Playfair graduated from the University of St Andrews with an M.A. in 1765. In 1766, while still only eighteen, Playfair entered a contest for the Chair of Mathematics at Marischal College in Aberdeen. In this contest, which lasted eleven days, he distinguished himself and gained great recognition. The extent of mathematical knowledge required to be successful in such a contest was immense. Playfair was unsuccessful, however, finishing third out of the six candidates, behind the Reverend Dr
