ENDNOTES
If you understand this first distinction, the much more difficult division of the intelligible world will make more sense. Think over this carefully: the visible world, that is, the world you see, has two kinds of visible objects in it. The first kind are shadows and reflections, that is, objects you see but aren't really there but derive from the second type of visible objects, that is, those that you see and are really there. The relation of the visible world to the intelligible world is identical to the relation of the world of reflections to the world of visible things that are real.

Biography
PLATO (c. 428-c. 347 BC), Greek philosopher, one of the most creative and influential thinkers in Western philosophy.Life. Plato was born to an aristocratic family in Athens. His father, Ariston, was believed to have descended from the early kings of Athens. Perictione, his mother, was distantly related to the 6th-century BC lawmaker Solon. When Plato was a child, his father died, and his mother married Pyrilampes, who was an associate of the statesman Pericles. As a young man Plato had political ambitions, but he became disillusioned by the political leadership in Athens. He eventually became a disciple of Socrates, accepting his basic philosophy and dialectical style of debate: the pursuit of truth through questions, answers, and additional questions. Plato witnessed the death of Socrates at the hands of the Athenian democracy in 399 BC. Perhaps fearing for his own safety, he left Athens tempor arily and traveled to Italy, Sicily, and Egypt. Plato's own theory of knowledge is found in the Republic, particularly in his discussion of the image of the divided line and the myth of the cave. In the former, Plato distinguishes between two levels of awareness: opinion and knowledge. Claims or assertions about the physical or visible world, including both commonsense observations and the propositions of science, are opinions only. Some of these opinions are well founded; some are not; but none of them counts as genuine knowledge. The higher level of awareness is knowledge, because there reason, rather than sense experience, is involved. Reason, properly used, results in intellectual insights that are certain, and the objects of these rational insights are the abiding universals, the eternal Forms or substances that constitute the real world.

Issues : What is the nature and function of rhetoric ? Can rhetoric properly be called an "art?" Does rhetoric impart knowledge or merely belief, and thereby constitute a false, or at best an insincere, way of knowing? Gor. Rhetoric, Socrates, is my art. Soc. Then I am to call you a rhetorician? Gor. Yes, Socrates, and a good one too, if you would call me that which, in Homeric language, "I boast myself to be." Soc. Very good then; as you profess to be a rhetorician, and a maker of rhetoricians, let me ask you, with what is rhetoric concerned: I might ask with what is weaving concerned, and you would reply (would you not?), with the making of garments? Gor. Yes.

If we mean our future guardians to regard the habit of quarrelling among themselves as of all things the basest, should any word be said to them of the wars in heaven, and of the plots and fightings of the gods against one another, for they are not true. No, we shall never mention the battles of the giants, or let them be embroidered on garments; and we shall be silent about the innumerable other quarrels of gods and heroes with their friends and relatives. If they would only believe us we would tell them that quarrelling is unholy, and that never up to this time has there been any quarrel between citizens; this is what old men and old women should being by telling children; and when they grow up, the poets also should be told to compose for them in a similar spirit.

111. The Academy [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
of the philosophical institution founded by plato, which advocated skepticism in succeeding generations.......
http://www.iep.utm.edu/a/academy.htm
The Academy
Philosophical institution founded by Plato, which advocated skepticism in succeeding generations. The Academy ( Academia Academia is frequently used in philosophical writings, especially in Cicero, as indicative of the Academic sect. Sextus Empiricus enumerates five divisions of the followers of Plato. He makes Plato founder of the first Academy, Aresilaus of the second, Carneades of the third, Philo and Charmides of the fourth, Antiochus of the fifth. Cicero recognizes only two Academies, the Old and the New, and makes the latter commence as above with Arcesilaus. In enumerating those of the old Academy, he begins, not with Plato, but Democritus, and gives them in the following order: Democritus, Anaxagoras, Empedocles, Parmenides, Xenophanes, Socrates, Plato, Speusippus, Xenocrates, Polemo, Crates, and Crantor. In the New, or Younger, he mentions Arcesilaus, Lacydes, Evander, Hegesinus, Carneades, Clitomachus, and Philo ( Acad. Quaest. iv. 5). If we follow the distinction laid down by Diogenes, and alluded to above, the Old Academy will consist of those followers of Plato who taught the doctrine of their master without mixture or corruption; the Middle will embrace those who, by certain innovations in the manner of philosophizing, in some measure receded from the Platonic system without entirely deserting it; while the New will begin with those who relinquished the more questionable tenets of Arcesilaus, and restored, in come measure, the declining reputation of the Platonic school.

Plato (ca. 427-ca. 347 BC)

Greek philosopher who was a student and follower of Socrates . He founded the Academy school in Athens. His works consisted of "dialogs" between Socrates and others. Like Socrates , he was interested in moral, not natural philosophy. He believed that the heads of government should be "philosopher kings" and developed a course of study stressing abstract thought for their education in the Republic. Plato advocated the "quadrivium" (the four math fields of study in the liberal arts), which starts with arithmetic, then progresses to plane geometry, solid geometry, and finally astronomy and harmonics. Plato believed that knowledge was "forgotten" at birth, and could be remembered. He saw the search for understanding as an attempt to gain pure knowledge, or "forms." In Eikos Mythos (A Likely Story ), he said that cosmology is, at best, a likely account. In Timaeus, he presented his cosmology which consisted of forms, particular objects, God the Craftsman, absolute space, and brute matter. As a craftsman, God could not make a perfect world from imperfect material.

114. Plato, "The Allegory Of The Cave"
plato s Allegory of the Cave, from The Republic, Book VII, is one of the most profound statements of plato s philosophical orientation.
http://www.historyguide.org/intellect/allegory.html
Plato, The Allegory of the Cave
The son of a wealthy and noble family, Plato (427-347 B.C.) was preparing for a career in politics when the trial and eventual execution of Socrates (399 B.C.) changed the course of his life. He abandoned his political career and turned to philosophy, opening a school on the outskirts of Athens dedicated to the Socratic search for wisdom. Plato's school, then known as the Academy, was the first university in western history and operated from 387 B.C. until A.D. 529, when it was closed by Justinian. Unlike his mentor Socrates, Plato was both a writer and a teacher. His writings are in the form of dialogues, with Socrates as the principal speaker. In the Allegory of the Cave , Plato described symbolically the predicament in which mankind finds itself and proposes a way of salvation. The Allegory presents, in brief form, most of Plato's major philosophical assumptions: his belief that the world revealed by our senses is not the real world but only a poor copy of it, and that the real world can only be apprehended intellectually; his idea that knowledge cannot be transferred from teacher to student, but rather that education consists in directing student's minds toward what is real and important and allowing them to apprehend it for themselves; his faith that the universe ultimately is good; his conviction that enlightened individuals have an obligation to the rest of society, and that a good society must be one in which the truly wise (the Philosopher-King) are the rulers.
