Neoplatonism
Neoplatonism is a modern term used to designate the period of Platonic philosophy beginning with the work of Plotinus and ending with the closing of the Platonic Academy by the Emperor Justinian in 529 CE. This brand of Platonism, which is often described as 'mystical' or religious in nature, developed outside the mainstream of Academic Platonism. The origins of Neoplatonism can be traced back to the era of Hellenistic syncretism which spawned such movements and schools of thought as Gnosticism and the Hermetic tradition. A major factor in this syncretism, and one which had an immense influence on the development of Platonic thought, was the introduction of the Jewish Scriptures into Greek intellectual circles via the translation known as the Septuagint . The encounter between the creation narrative of Genesis and the cosmology of Plato's Timaeus set in motion a long tradition of cosmological theorizing that finally culminated in the grand schema of Plotinus' Enneads . Plotinus' two major successors, Porphyry and Iamblichus, each developed, in their own way, certain isolated aspects of Plotinus' thought, but neither of them developed a rigorous philosophy to match that of their master. It was Proclus who, shortly before the closing of the Academy, bequeathed a systematic Platonic philosophy upon the world that in certain ways approached the sophistication of Plotinus. Finally, in the work of the so-called Pseudo-Dionysius, we find a grand synthesis of Platonic philosophy and Christian theology that was to exercise an immense influence on mediaeval mysticism and Renaissance Humanism.

Benjamin Peirce
Benjamin Peirce (b. April 4, 1809, d. October 6, 1880) was a professor at Harvard with interests in celestial mechanics, applications of plane and spherical trigonometry to navigation, number theory and algebra. In mechanics, he helped to establish the (effects of the) orbit of Neptune (in relation to Uranus). In number theory, he proved that there is no odd perfect number with fewer than four distinct prime factors. In algebra, he published a comprehensive book on complex associative algebras. Peirce is also of interest to philosophers because of his remarks about the nature and necessity of mathematics.
1. Career
Born in 1809, Peirce became a major figure in mathematics and the physical sciences during a period when the U.S. was still a minor country in these areas (Hogan 1991). A student at Harvard College, he was appointed tutor there in 1829. Two years later he became Professor of Mathematics in the University, a post which was changed in 1842 to cover astronomy also; he held it until his death in 1880. He played a prominent role in the development of the science curriculum of the university, and also acted as College librarian for a time. However, he was not a successful teacher, being impatient with students lacking strong gifts; but he wrote some introductory textbooks in mathematics, and also a more advanced one in mechanics (Peirce 1855). Among his other appointments, the most important one was Director of the U.S. Coast Survey from 1867 to 1874. Peirce also exercised influence through his children. By far the most prominent was

In his Republic we find just about the most influential early account of education. His interest in soul, dialogue and in continuing education continue to provide informal educators with rich insights.
Plato (428 - 348 BC) Greek philosopher who was the pupil of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle - and one of the most influential figures in 'western' thought. He founded what is said to be the first university - his Academy (near Athens) in around 385 BC. Plato's early works (dialogues) provide much of what we know of Socrates (470 - 399BC). In these early dialogues we see the use of the so called Socratic method . This is a question and answer form of arguing with an 'expert' on one side and a 'searcher' on the other. In the dialogues, the questioning of the expert by the 'searcher' often exposes gaps in the reasoning. Part of this can be put down to Plato's dislike of the Sophists (particularly as teachers of rhetoric) and his concern that teachers should know their subject. The 'middle period' of Plato's work is also characterised by the use of dialogues in which Socrates is the main speaker - but by this point it is generally accepted that it is Plato's words that are being spoken. We see the flowering of his thought around knowledge and the Forms, the Soul (

Plato's Academy
A cademy was a suburb of Athens, named after the hero Academos or Ecademos. The site was continuously inhabited from the prehistoric period until the 6th century A.D. During the 6th century B.C., one of the three famous Gymnasiums of Athens was founded here. Moreover, it is recorded that Hippias, the son of Peisistratos, built a circuit wall, and Cimon planted the area with trees which were destroyed by Sulla in 86 B.C. In 387 B.C. Plato founded his philosophical school, which became very famous due to the Neoplatonists, and remained in use until A.D. 526, when it was finally closed down by emperor Justinian.
T he first exvavations on the site were carried out between 1929 and 1940 by P. Aristophron, at his own expense. Work was resumed in 1955 by Ph. Stavropoulos under the auspices of the Athens Archaeological Society, and lasted until 1963. Since then, excavations have been conducted by the 3rd Ephorate of Antiquities. T he most important monuments of the site are:
Sacred House . Building of the Geometric period which comprises seven rectangular rooms on either side of a corridor. The structure presents strong similarity to the sacred house of Eleusis. Sacrificial remains found inside the building bare evidence of intensive religious practice.
Gymnasium . Large rectangular building with an internal peristyle, and rooms on the north side. A smaller room on the interior was used as a palaestra. Dated to the 1st century A.D.

ibid . iv 4; Diogenes lists about 30 titles, and his bibliography is on his own admission incomplete). We have very little of what he wrote, if any (we have something from a work later attributed to him, On Pythagorean Numbers , discussed below, but this is not one of Diogenes' titles; and we may have something preserved in Iamblichus, De communi mathematica scientia iv, also discussed below). What we can infer, mostly from Aristotle but with a few supplements from other authors, will be covered under three headings:
1. Metaphysics
Aristotle gives us an account of Plato's metaphysical views that goes considerably beyond what we find in Plato's dialogues. In fact, Aristotle gives us what he says are Plato's views and also those of others. From this we learn what little we can about Speusippus and his contemporary, Xenocrates. According to Aristotle, all three of Plato, Speusippus, and Xenocrates constructed their worlds operating with two principles (

Biography of Plato
Plato Plato's biography is mainly drawn from the work of other ancient writers and a few of Plato's own letters. He was born in Athens around 428 BC to an aristocratic family with a long and esteemed history of political leadership in the state. According to an anecdote of dubious veracity, Plato was originally named Aristocles, but was quickly dubbed, "Platon," meaning "broad," by schoolmates impressed with his broad shouldersshoulders that would one day burden themselves with the foundational weight of Western thought. Plato's father, Ariston, descended from the early kings of Athens, and his mother, Perictone, from a distinguished line that included 6th Century BC legislator Solon. Plato's father died when Plato was a young child; his mother, unable to support Plato, his two older brothers Adeimantus and Glaucon, and his young sister Potone on her own, remarried to Pyrilampes, an associate of the statesman Pericles. Socrates has been credited with teaching Plato basic philosophy along with his dialectic style of debate, in which the truth is elucidated through a series of questions and answers. It is also thought that Socrates directed his disciple's inquiries toward the question of virtue and how it manifested itself into the nobility of human character. If there is a broader context under which Plato's philosophy developed, eventually unifying to some extent metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, politics, and ethics, it is the pursuit of virtue.

NOTE FROM WEBMASTER : The text below is a very interesting text that Plato - the philosopher - wrote two thousand years ago in Greece. While reading the text, you can just replace " cave " (or "den") by " linguistic prison " (or "mental slavery"), " shadows " by "illusory archetypes in language and in your perception field", " upper world " by Backstage visible world " (or "world of sight") by Stage World , and " instrument of knowledge " by " activated crystal " . The difference is that at that epoch the world was populated almost totally by neutrals and today after this hurricane it is the opposite. You can say that you need someone with thought reading capabilities to form and reinforce this linguistic prison in your mind through the association of ideas and artificial synchronicity, so the conclusion is that a small group of people with the capacity of reading minds (FOREIGNERS ?)

RELATED STORIES, SITES MOORE, Oklahoma (CNN) After childhood fame and a troubled adulthood that included brushes with the law and battles with substance abuse, "Diff'rent Strokes" star Dana Plato died Saturday of a drug overdose. She was 34 and leaves behind a 14-year-old son. Plato was discovered unconscious at the home of her fiance's parents after failing to wake up from a nap. Efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead on arrival at Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She apparently took the painkiller Loritab along with the tranquilizer Valium before napping.
