Statue of a philosopher, presumably Plato, in Delphi Plato Greek Pl¡tōn ) (ca. May 21 427 BC – ca. 347 BC ) was an immensely influential classical Greek philosopher , student of Socrates , teacher of Aristotle , writer, and founder of the Academy in Athens . In countries speaking Arabic Turkish Persian , or Urdu , he is called Eflatun , which means a spring of water, and, metaphorically, of knowledge. Plato lectured extensively at the Academy but he also wrote on many philosophical issues. The most important writings of Plato are his dialogues ; although a handful of epigrams also survive, and some letters have come down to us under his name. We have very good reasons to believe that all the known dialogues of Plato survive; some of the dialogues which the Greeks ascribed to him are considered by the consensus of scholars to be either suspect (e.g., First Alcibiades Clitophon ) or probably spurious (such as Demodocus , or the Second Alcibiades Socrates is often a character in the dialogues of Plato. It is usually disputed how much of the content and argument of any given dialogue is Socrates' point of view, and how much of it Plato's. However, Plato was without doubt under a strong influence of Socrates' teachings, so many of the ideas presented in his early works were probably shared (at least partially).

All those nostalgic for those good old times could find traces of Hollywood's Cold War in the plot of PLATO'S RUN, 1997 action film directed by James Becket. Protagonist of the film is Plato Smith (played by Gary Busey), mine expert, former Navy SEAL and former CIA covert operative. After the end of Cold War he is utterly bored and spends all of its time hanging out with equally bored Cold War veterans in South Florida. Lack of money and persuasive powers of his former flame Marta (played by Tiani Warden) are reasons why he agrees to conduct covert operation for Gomez (played by Salvador Levy), powerful Cuban American. Gomez' son has been rotting in Castro's prison so Plato goes to Cuba to rescue him. But when it turns out that "son" was actually an assassin hired to kill Gomez, all hell breaks lose. Plato is set up for murder and must hide himself not only from police and vengeful Gomez's men, but also from Alexander Senarkian (played by Roy Scheider), menacing arms dealer.

PLATO , an apronym for Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operation , was one of the first generalized Computer assisted instruction systems, originally built by the University of Illinois (U of I) and later taken over by Control Data (CDC), who provided the machines it ran on. PLATO ran for many years at the U of I, but William Norris 's plans to make it a major force in the computing world and a keystone of corporate social responsibility failed. Although the project was economically a failure and supplanted by other technologies when it was finally turned off in the 1990s, PLATO nevertheless pioneered key concepts such as online forums and message boards, email, chat rooms, picture languages, instant messaging, remote screen sharing, and multiplayer online games.

Plato and his dialogues

A. N. Whitehead, Process and Reality Above: p ortrait of Plato after an original sculpted by Silanion around 370 B. C. Thasos ; below, fragment of a mosaic from the Saint-Gregory Convent in Rome exhibiting the inscription in Greec "gnôti sauton", meaning "Know thyself", Rome, National Museum of the Thermae. Plato is probably one of the greatest philosophers of all times, if not the greatest. Yet, he was one of the first philosophers, at least in the western philosophical tradition that was born in Greece a few hundred years BC., and anyway he is the first one whose complete works are still available to us. But if we have more than we would bargain for in terms of writings attributed to Plato, as some of the dialogues and letters transmitted to us under his name are obviously not his, we have very little data on his life and literary activity. As a result, many conflicting theories have been developed by scholars of various times regarding the interpretation of Plato's dialogues and their chronology to the extent it bears on that interpretation. This set of pages intends to present a new theory on the interpretation of Plato's dialogues and "philosophy".

Atlantis: Timaeus and Critias Introduction The Dialogues Cast of Characters Timaeus and Critias, two of Plato 's dialogues, are the only existing written records which specifically refer to Atlantis. The dialogues are conversations between Socrates, Hermocrates, Timeaus, and Critias. Apparently in response to a prior talk by Socrates about ideal societies, Timeaus and Critias agree to entertain Socrates with a tale that is "not a fiction but a true story." The story is about the conflict between the ancient Athenians and the Atlantians 9000 years before Plato's time. Knowledge of the distant past apparently forgotten to the Athenians of Plato's day, the story of Atlantis was conveyed to Solon by Egyptian priests. Solon passed the tale to Dropides, the great-grandfather of Critias. Critias learned of it from his grandfather also named Critias, son of Dropides. The dialogues that follow were written by Plato some time around 360 BC and are English translations by Benjamin Jowett: Note : The pages and paragraphs of the dialogues are a convenience created by myself. They are not a part of the originals but are intended to make load times relatively short and to make reading on computer monitors less of a strain.

Biography and description of the philosophy of plato.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/p/plato.htm
Plato (c. 427-347 B.C.E) Plato is one of the world's best known and most widely read and studied philosophers. Known as the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle, he wrote in the middle of the fourth century B.C.E. His earliest works are regarded as the most reliable of the ancient sources on Socrates. His later works, including his most famous work, the Republic, blend ethics, political philosophy, moral psychology, epistemology, and metaphysics into an interconnected and systematic philosophy. It is most of all from Plato that we get the theory of Forms, according to which the world we know through the senses is only an imitation of the pure, eternal, and unchanging world of the Forms. Plato's works also contain the origins of the familiar complaint that the arts work by inflaming the passions, the ideal of "Platonic love," and the myth of Atlantis.

http://www.iep.utm.edu/p/platopol.htm
Plato's Political Philosophy Plato (c. 427-347 B.C.E.) developed such distinct areas of philosophy as epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics. His deep influence on Western philosophy is asserted in the famous remark of Alfred North Whitehead: “the safest characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” He was also the prototypical political philosopher whose ideas had a profound impact on subsequent political theory. His greatest impact was Aristotle, but he influenced Western political thought in many ways. The Academy, the school he founded in 385 B.C.E., became the model for other schools of higher learning and later for European universities. The philosophy of Plato is marked by the usage of dialectic, a method of discussion involving ever more profound insights into the nature of reality, and by cognitive optimism, a belief in the capacity of the human mind to attain the truth and to use this truth for the rational and virtuous ordering of human affairs. Plato believes that conflicting interests of different parts of society can be harmonized. The best, rational and righteous, political order, which he proposes, leads to a harmonious unity of society and allows each of its parts to flourish, but not at the expense of others. The theoretical design and practical implementation of such order, he argues, are impossible without virtue.
