Joseph Plateau was a physicist who is best remembered in mathematics for Plateau Problems . He used a solution of soapy water and glycerine and dipped wire contours into it, noting that the surfaces formed were minimal surfaces. Plateau did not have the mathematical skills to investigate the problem theoretically but Weierstrass Riemann and Schwarz worked on the problem which was finally solved by Douglas and . Plateau wrote some mathematical work on number theory and wrote a joint article with Quetelet He was blind for the last 40 years of his life after he experimented by staring at the Sun for 25 seconds.

Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau, Dr : 1801 - 1883 Joseph Plateau (Born: 14 Oct 1801 in Brussels, Belgium Died: 15 Sept 1883 in Ghent, Belgium) developed the 'Magic Disk' or Phenakistiscope in 1836. An early stroboscopic device, the 'Phenakistiscope' used a disk with radial slits that he turned while viewing a rotating wheel; when the rotational speed of the disk and the wheel matched exactly, the wheel appeared motionless. Other pioneers employed rotating or vibrating mirrors to produce light pulses. Plateau was also facinated by the effect of the persistance of vision. His interest however cost him dearly. His experiments (gazing directly into the sun) caused him to go partially blind at 28 and totally blind in 1841. In 1853 Baron Franz von Uchatius was the first person to project visible moving images on a screen by improving on Plateau's Phenakistiscope. The use of stroboscopic photographs to produce the illusion of motion also led to the development of motion pictures

The battlefield of Waterloo.
Joseph Plateau (19 June 1815) The death of mother and father so impresses Joseph that he becomes very ill. The doctor prescribes a stay in the countryside. On 18 June 1815 Joseph is in a small village near Waterloo: the cannon of the battlefield can be heard. Everyone flees to the forest of Soignies. All this does not seem to make a big impression on the boy. He continues to catch butterflies, visits the battlefield the next day and paints a watercolour there. iiii

To him popular opinion has given the credit of conducting a remarkable strategic movement from Idaho to northern Montana in the flight of the Nez Perce in 1877. The unfortunate effort to retain what was rightly their own makes an unparalleled story in the annals of the Indians' resistance to the greed of the whites." -Curtis

Phenakistoscope Joseph Plateau, 1832 History How it works What became of it Animations ... Back to Optical Toys History: In 1832, Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau and his sons introduced the phenakistoscope ("spindle viewer"). It was also invented independently in the same year by Simon von Stampfer of Vienna, Austria, who called his invention a stroboscope. Plateau's inspiration had come primarily from the work of Michael Faraday and Peter Mark Roget (the compiler of Roget's Thesaurus). Faraday had invented a device he called "Michael Faraday's Wheel," that consisted of two discs that spun in opposite directions from each other. From this, Plateau took another step, adapting Faraday's wheel into a toy he later named the phenakistoscope. How it works: The phenakistoscope uses the persistence of motion principle to create an illusion of motion. Although this principle had been recognized by the Greek mathematician Euclid and later in experiments by Newton, it was not until 1829 that this principle became firmly established by Joseph Plateau. The phenakistoscope consisted of two discs mounted on the same axis. The first disc had slots around the edge, and the second contained drawings of successive action, drawn around the disc in concentric circles. Unlike Faraday's Wheel, whose pair of discs spun in opposite directions, a phenakistoscope's discs spin together in the same direction. When viewed in a mirror through the first disc's slots, the pictures on the second disc will appear to move.

Journalists: Ray Lazarchic, Ann Kiernan, and Tony Wolf December 16: Domaine Gaillard in Condrieu (Review 1 of 2) after Syrah. Viognier fermented in barrels, with cooling via water-cooled barrel probes. Fermentation can take some time due to high sugar (also using S. bayanus yeast). 10% of barrels are new, with oldest at 6 to 7 years. Uses more new oak for Syrah. All Viognier currently done in oak. pH about 3.8, and wine goes through M/L fermentation, spontaneously. Batonage for 6 months, every week. Wines (all from barrels) st wine: Roussane, 2002, sourced from plateau, difficult year with much rain at harvest. High acidity. nd Viognier wines: First was a 2001 bottled wine. I thought that the M/L and oak hid the fruit. Next was a barrel tasting of late-harvest Viognier - very high acidity and RS, but a nice balance. Another late-harvest Viognier was perhaps 20% RS, tasted almost like unfermented juice. Additional viticulture:
Brief walk through the vineyard of property - direction of slopes (aspect) determined whether vineyards were Condrieu or St. Joseph: south-facing slopes were Condrieu (Viognier) while eastern slopes were St. Joseph (Syrah). Rootstock was C-3309 for both. Training was palisade (VSP) with multiple catch wires, and simple Guyot. Vine spacing about 1.0 x 1.0 m. Rows running up and down slope - some movement of soil from bottom back to top was required. We saw (and photographed) evidence of erosion. When asked about labor requirements, Pierre indicated that he employed 10 people to work 20 ha. Vines had been rough-pruned when we visited. They use a two-part process with first part being a rough pruning and the second, later step being the finished step of selecting a single cane to arch and tie.

Beyond the Plateau
John Wesley Powell is described by one biographer, the late novelist Wallace Stegner, as "the personification of an ideal of public service that seems peculiarly a product of the American experience." In 1867, while in Washington, Powell had sought help from the War Department and the Smithsonian for an expedition into the Rocky Mountains. Henry and Baird offered him advice and instruments, including a barometer that was crucial in determining elevation. Powell completed that trip, and then decided to attempt a reconnaissance of the Colorado River country; Henry was more enthusiastic this time, but still didn't under-write the trip. Powell planned an unprecedented descent of the Colorado River. The idea that a physically impaired manPowell had lost his right arm as a Union artillery captain at the battle of Shilohand nine companions could survive 1,500 miles of uncharted cataracts in four wooden boats no doubt seemed unlikely. So Powell cobbled together contributions from the Illinois Natural History Society and Illinois Industrial University, instruments from the Chicago Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian, and government rations. In the spring of 1869, the expedition set out from Green River, Wyoming Territory. It soon caught the public's fancy; for a time during the 99-day ordeal, the party was feared lost. Powell and his men endured hunger and deprivation, and three who left the expedition prematurely were murdered by Shivwit Indians. Powell's emergence from the Grand Canyon, in that forbidding landscape described by John Strong Newberry a dozen years before, made him a national hero, and riveted public attention. Powell's first river-running party had survived, as Stegner wrote, by "observation, caution, intelligence, skill, planning—in a word, Science."
