October 5, 1947 OBITUARY
Max Planck Dead; Noted Physicist, 89
Winner of Nobel Prize in 1919 Originated Quantum Theory, Aiding in Splitting Atom Discovered Constant 'H' One of the Intellectual Giants of Century, He Was Ranked With Science Immortals BY THE NEW YORK TIMES
The Associated Press Max Planck (undated photo) ERLIN, Oct. 4 (AP)Dr. Max Planck, Nobel Prize-winner and originator of the Quantum Theory which provided one of the basic propositions underlying the splitting of the atom, died last night, the Goettingen University clinic announced today. His age was 89. Intellectual Giant Max Planck was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and one of the outstanding intellects of all time. As father of the Quantum Theory he ranks with the immortals of science, such as Archimedes, Galileo, Newton and Einstein. Modern physical science rests on two pillarsthe theory of relativity and the quantum theory. The one gave man a new and more profound understanding of space and time, matter and motion; the other has provided man with a master key to the universe within the atom, to the nature of light and radiant energy in general. Relativity gave man a key to the universe at large; the quantum theory gave him a key to the atom. Like the theory of relativity, the quantum theory is universally regarded as one of the outstanding scientific achievements of the twentieth century and one of the greatest intellectual contributions of all time. As expanded later by Einstein, Niels Bohr, Prince de Broglie, Schroedinger and Dirac, it has become one of the two foundations of modern physics, and particularly of the physics of the atomic nucleus.

Currently, the Max Planck Society supports about 80 institutes active in various scientific disciplines, mainly in Germany. Like all other Max Planck Institutes, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics concentrates on fundamental research. The Institute's research topic is psycholinguistics, i.e. the study of mental processes involved in language production, language comprehension and language acquisition, as well as the relation between language, thought, and culture ("cognitive anthropology").

pdf-download, 1 MB Group picture The Center for Adaptive Behavior and Cognition explores cognitive strategies (including social and emotional components) with which people and other animals make judgments and decisions in the face of uncertain situations. This interdisciplinary group, spanning the fields of psychology, computer science, economics, mathematics, anthropology, and biology and behavioral ecology, uses a variety of methods to analyze the building blocks of simple heuristics and the way they allow good decisions to be reached even with limited time and knowledge.
Fast and frugal heuristics fill part of our mind's "adaptive toolbox" of decision strategies. Together, these heuristics produce a rationality which is ecological, rather than merely logical - decision making that is well-adapted to specific environmental settings or domains and specific classes of problems, rather than being universally applicable to all situations and problems. This ecological rationality stands in contrast to theories of human or social behavior based on logic, probability theory, or other universal domain-general systems, from expected utility theory to Homo Oeconomicus's rational choice maxims.
