Planck, Max German physicist who lived from 1858 to 1947. From his hypothesis (1900) that Atom s emit and absorb Energy only in discrete bundles (quanta - quantum is plural of quanta) instead of continuously, as assumed in classical physics, the Quantum Theory was developed. Planck received the 1918 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on Blackbody radiation (see Radioactivity ). He was professor (1889-1928) at the University of Berlin and president (1930-35) of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science, Berlin. Planck's Constant is named for him.

Max Planck
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck ) was a German physicist who is considered to be the inventor of quantum theory Born on April 23 in Kiel , Planck started his physics studies at Munich University in , graduating in in Berlin . He returned to München in to teach at the university, and moved to Kiel in . There he married Marie Merck in . In , he moved to Berlin, where from on he held the chair of theoretical physics. In , he discovered a new fundamental constant, which is named Planck's constant , and is, for example, used to calculate the energy of a photon . Also that year, he described his own set of units of measurement based on fundamental physical constants . One year later, he discovered the law of heat radiation, which is named Planck's Law of Radiation . This law became the basis of quantum theory , which emerged ten years later in cooperation with Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr From to , Planck acted as the head of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft German Physical Society ). His wife died in 1909, and one year later he married Marga von Hoesslin. In

Famous Quotes By: Planck, Max 1858-1947 German Theoretical Physicist
An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents. What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out, and that the growing generation is familiarized with the ideas from the beginning.
Planck, Max
Innovation

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck

Diversity of Human Language
We are interested in finding out what properties are common to all human languages ("language universals") and the ways in which languages can differ from each other ("linguistic typology"). Beyond this, we aim to answer the question why language universals and cross-linguistic variation are the way they are. To this end, we study various phenomena across a wide range of languages. Our work makes reference to formal properties of language, to the cognitive bases of language, and to aspects of language in use. As part of our work on the cross-linguistic study of various phenomena, we also work on the descriptive grammars of various little studied, and often endangered, languages. This work includes extensive periods of time spent with speakers of these languages in the areas where the languages are spoken.
