In 1563 he settled in Brussels, working thereafter both for eminent private patrons and for the city government. Piero DELLA FRANCESCA Formative period The documented facts of Piero della Francesca's life, which are few, permit a reasonably accurate reconstruction of his career and interests but not an exact chronology of his surviving paintings. His father, Benedetto de' Franceschi, was evidently a tanner and shoemaker, prosperous enough for his son to become well educated and literate in Latin. Nothing is known about Piero's early training as a painter, though it is assumed that he was instructed by local masters who had been influenced by Sienese art. Back in Sansepolcro by 1442, Piero was elected to the town council. Three years later the Confraternità della Misericordia commissioned an altarpiece from him. This polyptych shows Piero's indebtedness to the Florentines Donatello and Masaccio, his fondness for geometric form, and the slowness and deliberation with which he habitually workedfor the Misericordia altarpiece was not completed until 1462. Periodic retreat to the provincial isolation of Sansepolcro seems to have been necessary for Piero's work. For the rest of his life he alternated between the calm of Sansepolcro and contact with the Humanistic life of the Renaissance in artistic and intellectual centres such as Ferrara and Rimini.

So reports St. Mark in his account of the baptism of Jesus of Nazareth in the Jordan. Artists have taken him at his word. For example Piero della Francesca has a white dove hovering immediately over the monumental figure Christ, its wings a gentle tremor from which descends the Spirit in a series of shallow ripples like horizontal wisps of cloud. It is a solemn moment and the scene is attended by angels on either side. Piero presents the inaugural moment of the sacrament of baptism. This work is for baptism what more numerous paintings of the Last Supper are for the Eucharist. And it was executed not for a gallery but for a sacramental setting: it was painted for the chapel of St John the Baptist in the church of an community of eremitic monks at Piero's native town.

Perspective as Contradiction John Haber in New York City Fra Carnevale: The Making of a Renaissance Master Fra Carnevale traveled in the right company. Like Sandro Boticelli, he apprenticed under Fra Filippo Lippi, perhaps the most advanced painter in Florence. As a student of Masaccio, Lippi had assisted on the frescos that gave birth to Italian Renaissance painting. Sometime after 1450, Carnevale returned to his native Urbino, where another itinerant painter, Piero della Francesca, curried favor with one of the most powerful and ruthless men in Italy. Art like Piero's took many of its cues from architecture, sculpture, and mathematics, and Carnevale, too, turned to design and engineering. He worked on Urbino's first Renaissance church, which came to completion under Luca della Robbia, one of Florence's leading sculptors and a pioneer of terracotta as a decorative building material. Reunion and community Seventy years ago, the Met acquired the first of two tall panels, painted by 1467 for the church of Santa Maria della Bella in Urbino. With its companion in Boston, they most likely stood on the altar of the confraternity, in an oratory adjacent to a hospital. The panels depict The Birth and Presentation of the Virgin Statuary, above the porticos in low relief, outlines human pleasures and the stages of life. The large cast below describes a vast but orderly community. Meanwhile, the architecture and its central figures suggest the place of the confraternity and hospital at the center of it all. The plaza offers a home to lame men or beggars, women in prayer, and of course the birth and presentation.

Este artista será el gran enamorado de la luz en el Quattrocento italiano y uno de los más grandes pintores del siglo XV. Nació en Borgo San Sepolcro entre 1416 y 1417; desconocemos con quién realizó su formación suponiéndose que fue en su ciudad natal, posiblemente en el taller de Antonio de Anghiari, siendo la primera noticia documentada de 1439, cuando estaba en Florencia con Domenico Veneziano pintando los frescos de San Egidio, hoy perdidos. También se especula sobre un aprendizaje en la capital de la Toscana debido al profundo conocimiento de las obras del Beato Angelico Paolo Ucello y Masaccio , a quienes debe parte de su formación. Ya en estos años juveniles muestra una profunda admiración hacia la perspectiva, la proporción, el orden y la simetría, siguiendo las teorías arquitectónicas y matemáticas de Leon Battista Alberti. Lungo l'arco dei soggiorni urbinati si collocano altre opere, in particolare per la città natale la "Madonna del parto" del 1460 ca. nella cappella del cimitero di Monterchi e la "Resurrezione di Cristo del 1463-65 nella Pinacoteca di Sansepolcro. Pour nous en convaincre examinons une œuvre le Baptême du Christ du " souverain incontesté de la peinture et de l'architecture " : Piero Della Francesca. Cette composition, à la frontalité affirmée, apparaît de prime abord assez simple. Elle comporte peu de lignes soumises aux contraintes d'une perspective rigoureuse imposée par des éléments architecturaux comme dans La Flagellation Matériellement, le Baptême, peint à la détrempe à l'oeuf sur un enduit lisse, est constitué de deux larges planches de peuplier au veinage vertical. Compte-tenu de la grande taille du panneau (167*116) et sachant que le bois en séchant se rétracte surtout dans le sens transversal du fil, le rapport hauteur/largeur à l'origine était certainement très proche de V¯2 (167*118) comme dans La Flagellation . Piero, à une date que nous ignorons, ne peignit que ce panneau, partie centrale d'un grand retable terminé, probablement, vers 1465, par Matteo di Giovanni. Au XIXème siècle, on pouvait encore voir au-dessus du panneau une représentation de Dieu le Père, disparue aujourd'hui.
