A fine example of early experiments in art-critical film by Carlo Ragghianti. It examines the work of this very individual master who was perhaps the first to exploit the subduing and soothing qualities of light. His ability to endow the world with majesty and calm has never been surpassed.

He delighted in the play of mathematical ratios and painted The Flagellation of Christ (c.1450; Urbino) in a measured, symmetrical manner. His most famous cycle, The Story of the True Cross Golden Legend. Particularly notable are the imposing portrayal of the Queen of Sheba, the stately array of battle scenes, and the stark night scene of the Dream of Constantine. He painted several court portraits, including one of Sigismondo Malatesta before his Patron Saint, a simple geometric conception. This contrasts with the scrupulous detail he used in painting the profile portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (Uffizi). Piero also executed the massive

    Piero della Francesca's Polyhedra
Piero della Francesca (1410(?) - 1492) was an outstanding 15th century Renaissance artist , both a mathematician and a painter. His genius in developing the new methods of perspective and employing them in his paintings has withstood the centuries. However, his well-deserved mathematical reputation was lost and only has been regained in this century. That loss was largely due to the fact that Pacioli plagarized Piero's major writings shortly after Piero's death, incorporating them into his published books without attribution. For centuries, the mathematical contributions of Piero were questioned. However, three of Piero's mathematical manuscripts were discovered in the early 20th century, and his reputation regained. Piero is the first of a series of artists whose geometric explorations involved the gradual rediscovery of the Archimedean solids . He rediscovered the five Archimedean solids which are truncated Platonic solids : the truncated tetrahedron truncated octahedron truncated cube truncated dodecahedron , and truncated icosahedron . These were presumably known to Archimedes, but that was not known in Piero's time. In addition, he rediscovered the

Piero della Francesca (1420-1492)
Piero della Francesca was one of the most respected artists of the early Renaissance . He was born in Italy in 1410 and soon became interested in mathematics, drawing and Latin classics. He studied art with great masters of the day: Domencio Veneziano, Masaccio and Donatello. Piero was famous during his time. He received many commissions for portraits and religious paintings throughout Italy. As an old man, Piero began to lose his eyesight and spent his final years writing books about mathematics, perspective and painting. He died in 1492 at age 82. Piero's paintings are orderly, precise and formal. He made careful observations of the world and painted very realistically. Like many Renaissance artists, he spent many hours using geometry to plan the composition of each artwork. Sometimes he even made models of geometric forms instead of working with live models . He also used light, color and linear perspective to create the illusion of depth in his works. Piero was also the first Italian artist to include a landscape in the background of his paintings.

Following the Art Trails
Pauline Kenny, 2002 Following an Art Trail is a great excuse for touring the countryside in Italy. Pick an Italian artist and find the towns where you can see his work. The Piero della Francesca is well known and is well worth following. I have put together trails for two other artists: Perugino and Pintoricchio.
Piero della Francesca Trail
Piero della Francesca was a wonderful Renaissance painter from Sansepolcro. You will see his work in many of the major art galleries. It has become popular to do a day trip to see four of his major pieces (frescoes and paintings). This is referred to as the Piero della Francesca Trail. The book "Summer's Lease" by John Mortimer revolves around the main character doing the Piero della Francesca Trail. Frances Mayes also does part of the trail in her second book on Italy, "Bella Tuscany".
  • Arezzo : "The Story of the True Cross" (also called "Legend of the Cross"); in the center of Arezzo, in the San Francesco Church. This fresco has been hidden from view during much of the 1990s for restoration. We tried to see it in 1997, but the entire fresco was covered. In 1999 we were able to join a small tour led by an art restorer and climb up the scaffolding to look at the left side. It was beautiful. The entire fresco has now been restored. The fresco is located at the end of the church, behind the alter and is from floor to ceiling on the back wall and on the two sides. The church is closed midday (from noon to 2pm). There is a great caffe across the street from the church.

Friday, April 22, 2005 :: infoZine Staff page views From Filippo Lippi to Piero Della Francesca By Debra Shapiro - Fra Carnevale and the Making of a Renaissance Master Scout Report - infoZine - This special Web feature from the Metropolitan Museum centers around two fifteenth century paintings acquired by two US museums (the Metropolitan and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston) from the Barberini Collection in Rome in the 1930s, that have puzzled scholars for more than a century, and have only recently been identified as the work of Giovanni di Bartolomeo Corradini of Urbino, also known as Fra Carnevale. In addition to investigating the mystery of Fra Carnevale, the Web feature also examines the concepts of artistic identity, in contrast with the Renaissance practice of artworks that issue from the studio of a named artist, that are actually the work of many unnamed artists. To do this, the feature is divided into three sections: "Filippo Lippi", 29 works by Lippi and others trained in his workshop; "An Alternative Vision", seven paintings by artists working within the studio system, but, similar to Fra Carnevale's works, containing unusual elements; and "The Mystery of Fra Carnevale", including the two panels, most likely parts of Fra Carnevale's altarpiece for Santa Maria della Bella in Urbino
