Piero della Francesca (c. 1416-1492)
Painter, b. at Borgo San-Sepolcro, about 1420; d. there, 1492. The most usual form of his name is the traditional one, PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA, which is better authenticated in contemporary documents than what in late research had been supposed to be the more correct form, PIERO DEI FRANCESCHI (Gronau, Repertorium fur Kunstwissenschaft Vasari , he also decorated a room of the Vatican for Pope Nicholas V. In 1454 he was again at Borgo San-Sepolcro, where in 1460 he painted a fresco of St. Louis of Toulouse, now preserved in the town hall. It was probably between this date and 1466 that he painted his masterpiece, the frescoes in the choir of San Francesco at Arezzo, which may, however, have been begun earlier. The subject is the Story of the True Cross , involving incidents beginning with Adam and including the story of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Constantine and St. Helena, Heraclius and Chosroes. These frescoes rank with those by Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel as epoch-making in the decorative art of the fifteenth century.
In the spring of 1469 Piero was at Urbino, lodging in the house of Giovanni Santi, the father of

His largest-scale work is the fresco series The Legend of the True Cross The Resurrection of Christ (Pinacoteca, Borgo San Sepulcro) and the panel altarpiece Madonna with the Duke of Urbino as Donor (Brera, Milan). He delighted in the play of mathematical ratios and painted The Flagellation of Christ (c.1450; Urbino) in a measured, symmetrical manner. His most famous cycle, The Story of the True Cross Golden Legend. Particularly notable are the imposing portrayal of the Queen of Sheba, the stately array of battle scenes, and the stark night scene of the Dream of Constantine. He painted several court portraits, including one of Sigismondo Malatesta before his Patron Saint, a simple geometric conception. This contrasts with the scrupulous detail he used in painting the profile portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (Uffizi). Piero also executed the massive Resurrection (Borgo San Sepolcro) and several altarpieces, parts of which have been lost or scattered. One panel of a saint is in the Frick Collection, New York. He always painted slowly and deliberately, and after 1475 his activity slackened.

Biography:

Piero della Francesca was born in Borgo San Sepolcro, Italy and lived there most of his life. He studied under Veneziano in Florence, and was strongly inspired by Donatello, Masaccio, and Uccello. After 1470, he abandoned art for his other interests in mathematics. Because of his slow and negligent working style, many of his commissions took long periods of time or were never finished. He received little to no recogniton until the 1800’s, when he was discovered to be one of the important artists of the Renaissance.

Piero della Francesca - Treatise on Geometry
The First Treatise on Geometry of the Renaissance
(Libellus de quinque corporibus regolaribus)
15th Century
he National Critical Edition of the writings of Piero della Francesca starts with the Treatise on Geometry Libellus de quinque corporibus regolaribus , the first in the world dedicated entirely to this fundamental text by the great artist from Borgo San Sepolcro. The Libellus written by Piero della Francesca after the Trattato d’Abaco and De Prospectiva pingendi (both forthcoming publications), was the first treatise on geometry of the Renaissance in which problems relating to the construction and calculation of polyhedrons, which had never before been drawn in stereometric form, were developed. The treatise, which as survived as a single manuscript, the Vaticano Urbinate Latino 632 codex, compiled by an unknown author but accompanied by drawings, corrections and additions made by Piero himself, was dedicated to Guidubaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. This work was known from the beginning of the sixteenth century, not as belonging to Piero, and not even in Latin but as part of the Divina Proportione by Fra Luca Pacioli, who published it in Italian as his own work. The plagiarism was denounced by Giorgio Vasari and has been the object of heated dispute ever since.

58. The Geometry Of Piero Della Francesca
The Geometry of piero della francesca. by Mark A. Peterson is the cover article of Here are some other Piero sites. Biography of piero della francesca
http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~mpeterso/piero/piero.html
The Geometry of Piero della Francesca
by Mark A. Peterson is the cover article of the Summer 1997 issue of The Mathematical Intelligencer. The cover shows a detail of "The Flagellation of Christ" by Piero, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. In addition to his unassailable reputation as a painter, Piero has long been considered a kind of "mathematician," largely because Giorgio Vasari, writing in the mid 1500's, said he was. Until the 20th century, however, there was no firm evidence on this point. The belated discovery of three manuscript books by Piero changes the picture completely. It has taken almost another 100 years for people to begin to look at these books as serious works of mathematics.
The article describes the kind of mathematics to be found in Piero's work. It is far beyond anything his contemporaries were doing, meaning that Piero was not just among the great painters of his century, he was without question the greatest mathematician of the 1400's. The article is available in preprint form as a gzipped Postscript file (5 figures + text).
