THOSE are indeed unfortunate who, after most arduous studies to
the end that they may assist others and leave a reputation behind
them, are not allowed, either through sickness or death, to complete
the works which they have begun. And it very often happens in cases
where they have almost brought their works to completion, that they
suffer from the presumption of those who endeavour to

Time, which is called the father of Truth, sooncr or later brings the

A consummate arithmetician, geometrician and per- spectivist, the blindness which came upon him in liis old age and the termination of his life, prevented him from displaying the results of his labours and the numerous books wri tteii by him, which are still preserved in his native Borgo. PIERO della FRANCESCA (b. 1416, Borgo San Sepolcro, d. 1492, Borgo San Sepolcro)
Biography
Italian painter, virtually forgotten for centuries after his death, but regarded since his rediscovery in the early 20th century as one of the supreme artists of the quattrocento. He was born in Borgo San Sepolcro (now Sansepolcro) in Umbria and spent much of his life there. We hear of him also at various times in Ferrara, Rimini, Arezzo, Rome, and Urbino. But he found the origins of his style in Florence, and he probably lived there as a young man for some time during the 1430s, although he is documented there only once, in 1439 (the first known reference to him), when he was assisting Domenico Veneziano on frescoes (now lost) in S. Egidio. His first documented work, the polyptych of the Madonna della Misericordia (Pinacoteca, Sansepolcro), commissioned in 1445 but not completed until much later, shows that he had studied and absorbed the artistic discoveries of his great Florentine predecessors and contemporaries — Masaccio,

Piero della Francesca , who came from a family of fairly prosperous merchants, is recognised as one of the most important painters of the Renaissance. In his own time he was also known as a highly competent mathematician. In his Lives of the most famous painters ... , Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1572) says that Piero showed mathematical ability in his earliest youth and went on to write 'many' mathematical treatises. Of these, three are now known to survive. The titles by which they are known are: Abacus treatise (Trattato d'abaco) Short book on the five regular solids (Libellus de quinque corporibus regularibus) and On perspective for painting (De prospectiva pingendi) . Piero almost certainly wrote all three works in the vernacular (his native dialect was Tuscan), and all three are in the style associated with the tradition of 'practical mathematics', that is, they consist largely of series of worked examples, with rather little discursive text. The Abacus treatise is similar to works used for instructional purposes in 'Abacus schools'. It deals with arithmetic, starting with the use of fractions, and works through series of standard problems, then it turns to algebra, and works through similarly standard problems, then it turns to geometry and works through rather more problems than is standard before (without warning) coming up with some entirely original three-dimensional problems involving two of the 'Archimedean polyhedra' (those now known as the truncated tetrahedron and the

Piero della Francesca Long neglected, Piero della Francesca is now regarded as one of the greatest Renaissance painters - perhaps we needed Cezanne and Cubism to teach us to appreciate his perfect use of form and colour. Born sometime between 1410-1420, he remained faithful to his native town of Borgo San Sepolcro (modern day Sansepolcro in Umbria) for the rest of his life despite travelling afar. In 1442 he was made a member of the Priori (town council), a post he retained until his death. His earliest known painting is the Madonna della Misericordia at Sansepolcro but like many of his works it took years to complete; it was ordered from him in 1445 for delivery in three years but was finally paid for some 17 years later. A master of the impersonal, his mathematical clarity and absence of sentimentality produced images whose spiritual depth still confounds us. Always seeking to redraw the boundaries of art, he was also a great theorist and wrote two of the most important treatises of his time on perspective. The last record we have of him painting was in 1478 but he lived on until 1492 - tragically, blindness seems to have blighted his last years. To follow a pilgrim's trail of his works - yes, yes, we know only Urbino is in the Marche - visit the Uffizi in Florence to see his famous twin portraits of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, Arezzo for his great fresco cycle of

ECIT - Electronic Compendium of Images and Text
This project addresses the problem of bringing electronic technology into the teaching of humanities subjects in a manner that we believe will challenge traditional methods of pedagogy and benefit the learning process in a fundamental way. The technology is a newly created electronic teaching tool called *E.C.I.T* (Electronic Compendium of Images and Text), which brings together facts, conceptual materials, visual images, and three-dimensional models in a fully searchable electronic compendium. Originally developed in a workstation only environment, ECIT is now available on the World Wide Web! Try it Yourself!

Piero della Francesca was one of the most original men of the renaissance. Piero had two passions - art and geometry - the very things that this course is dealing with. He carried these on at the same time and, we will try to show here, how he integrated the two. Luca Pacioli (c.1445-1517) was a renowned mathematician, captivating lecturer, teacher, prolific author, religious mystic, and acknowledged scholar in numerous fields. He was a link between the Early Renaissance of Piero and the High Renaissance of Leonardo. Leonardo (1452-1519) is considered by many the ultimate renaissance man, skilled in mathematics, philosophy, civil and military architecture, engineering, painting, sculpture, science, music, invention, and the design of weapons. We'll consider Leonardo in our next unit. These three Renaissance men were linked as student to teacher; Piero taught mathematics to Luca, and Luca taught Leonardo. They are also linked by the Platonic solids.

PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA (Sansepolcro, 1416/17 approx.- 1492)
Piero della Francesca is certainly one of the most important Italian painters of the XV century. His art was ample, monumental and rational, and represents one of the highest artistic ideals of the early Renaissance. The absolute mathematical rigour of his creations emphasises the abstract and iconic traits of his paintings and adds a powerful religious feeling to his masterpieces.
Piero was born around 1416 in Borgo San Sepolcro : his father, Benedetto , was a leather and wool dealer, while his mother, Romana di Perino , came from Monterchi , a village nearby.
Piero della Francesca 's first works show a thorough knowledge of the art of his age and suggest that he might have spent some time in Florence ; his presence in the Tuscan county town is mentioned in a document dated 1439, when he worked with Domenico Veneziano at the series of frescoes for the chiesa di Sant'Egidio (the church of Saint Egidio), now lost. After his Florentine experience, around 1440-1445 he painted the
