From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Charles ‰mile Picard July 24 December 11 ) was a leading French mathematician . (He is usually referred to simply as ‰mile Picard Picard's mathematical papers, textbooks, and many popular writings exhibit an extraordinary range of interests, as well as an impressive mastery of the mathematics of his time. Modern students of complex variables are probably familiar with two of his named theorems. His lesser theorem states that every nonconstant entire function takes every value in the complex plane, with perhaps one exception. His greater theorem states that an analytic function with an essential singularity takes every value infinitely often, with perhaps one exception, in a neighborhood of that singularity. He also made important contributions in the theory of differential equations , including work on Painlev© transcendents and his introduction of a kind of symmetry group for a linear differential equation, the Picard group . In connection with his work on function theory, he was one of the first mathematicians to use the emerging ideas of

Picard, (Charles) Emile French mathematician whose work was mainly in the fields of mathematical analysis and algebraic geometry. He formulated two theorems on integral functions. He applied mathematical principles as much as possible to other branches of science, particularly physics and engineering.
Picard's 'little theorem' states that an integral function of the complex variable takes every finite value, with one possible exception. In 1879 he expressed it in this way:
Let f(z) be an entire function. If there exist two values of A for which the equation f(z) = A does not have a finite root, then f(z) is a constant. From this it follows that if f(z) is an entire function that is not a constant, there cannot be more than one value of A for which f(z) = A has no solution.
This was followed 1880 by Picard's 'big theorem':
Let f(z) be a function, analytic everywhere except at a where it has an essential isolated singularity; the equation f(z) = A has in general an infinity of roots in any neighbourhood of a. Although the equation can fail for certain exceptional values of the constant A, there cannot be more than two such values.
Picard's work on the integrals attached to algebraic surfaces, together with the associated topological questions, developed into an area of algebraic geometry that had applications in topology and function theory.

38. Picard Iteration Revisited
It is attributed to the French mathematician Charles emile picard (18561941).Theorem 2 (Successive Approximations - picard Iteration).
http://math.fullerton.edu/mathews/n2003/PicardIterationMod.html
Module for Picard Iteration Introduction
The term "Picard iteration" occurs two places in undergraduate mathematics. In numerical analysis it is used when discussing fixed point iteration for finding a numerical approximation to the equation . In differential equations, Picard iteration is a constructive procedure for establishing the existence of a solution to a differential equation that passes through the point The first type of Picard iteration uses computations to generate a "sequence of numbers" which converges to a solution. We will not present this application, but mention that it involves the traditional role of computer software as a "number cruncher." The goal of this article is to illustrate the second application of Picard iteration; i. e. how to use a computer to efficiently generate a "sequence of functions" which converges to a solution. We will see that computer software can perform the more sophisticated task of "symbol cruncher." For years, software such as Mathematica Maple Scientific Work Place MuPad ... Mathcad , and Matlab Background
Most differential equations texts give a proof for the existence and uniqueness of the solution to a first order differential equation. Then exercises are given for performing the laborious details involved in the method of successive approximations. The concept seems straightforward, just repeated integration, but students get bogged down with the details. Now computers can do all the drudgery and we can get a better grasp on how the process works.

Charles Emile Picard
Born: 24 July 1856 in Paris, France
Died: 11 Dec 1941 in Paris, France
Emile Picard 's father was the manager of a silk factory who died during the siege of Paris in 1870. The siege was a consequence of the Franco-German War which began on 19 July 1870. It went badly for France and on 19 September 1870 the Germans began a siege of Paris. This was a desperate time for the inhabitants of the town who killed their horses, cats and dogs for food. It was during this siege that Emile's father died. Paris surrendered on 28 January 1871 and The Treaty of Frankfurt, signed on 10 May 1871, was an humiliation for France. Picard's mother, the daughter of a medical doctor, was put in an extremely difficult position when her husband died. As well as Emile, she had a second young son, and in order to support them through their education she had to find employment. Only her determination to give her sons a good start, despite the tragedy, allowed Emile to receive the education which gave him the chance to achieve the highest international stading in mathematics. Picard's secondary education was at the Lycée Napoléon, later called the Lycée Henri IV. Strangely he was a brilliant pupil at almost all his subjects, particularly in translating Greek and Latin poetry, but he disliked mathematics. He himself wrote that he hated geometry but he:- ... learned it by heart in order to avoid being punished. It was only during the vacation after completing his secondary studies that Picard read an algebra book and suddenly he became fascinated in mathematics. He took the entrance examinations for Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Normale Supérieure; he was placed second and first respectively in the two examinations. Hadamard
