84. The Legend Of Perseus
The truth about the Greek Mythological hero perseus.

[Chris Oakley's home page] [The next installment - Dionysus]
The Legend of Perseus
Our part of the galaxy - like the other spiral arms - remains relatively unexplored by most of the hyper-advanced races that dwell near the centre, or hub cap, of the galaxy, and in the last few thousand years the only use they have made of our sector (which consists of little more than two million life-supporting planets) has been as a penal colony.
It was then purely by chance that Gaea, a woman from one of the old crime families on the ultra-chic planet Chaos, and a neurotic with violent tendencies, was dropped off in Northern Greece to serve a two thousand year sentence for cannibalism. The gaolers, one of who had managed to get her pregnant in the long trip over, did not stay long enough to consider the fact that dropping a violent psychotic on a planet whose native life forms had vastly inferior powers was not really cricket.
The rest is history, or, at least, mythology, and is chronicled by Homer and Euripides, amongst others. She bred incestuously with her son Uranus (no jokes, please) to produce - no big surprise - a series of genetic freaks, some of which were giants with a hundred hands and some of which had only one eye: only the youngest seven were remotely normal. Of all the murderous family squabbles that followed, culminating in her grandson Zeus emerging as the ruler, you would not want to know - at least not until our book on the subject comes out - but suffice it to say that if the Greeks thought they had problems before the gods came on the scene, well

MYTH MAN'S HOMEWORK HELP CENTER
PERSEUS
PERSEUS As told by the authors Ovid and Hesiod King Acrisius of Argos had only one child, a daughter named Danaë. She was beautiful above all the other women of the land, but the King was not content because he wanted to have a son. Journeying to the Oracle of Delphi, he was told by the priestess that he would never be the father of a boy, and even worse, his daughter would have a son who would kill him. In an attempt to escape his fate, he tried to ensure that Danaë would not have any children. He shut and guarded her in a house built of bronze and sunk underground. He hoped that in this way, he would not have to kill her and thus would spare his own life. One day, Zeus visited her as a shower of gold and she bore his son. For a time, she tried to conceal the child from her father, but the narrow limits of the bronze house made it increasingly difficult and soon Perseus was discovered by his grandfather. Acrisius was very angry but was afraid to kill the boy or his mother because he feared Zeus. He had a great chest made, placed the two in it, and brought it to the sea and cast it into the water. The chest was tossed out to sea and finally one day, they landed on an island but they had no way to get out of the box. Fate willed it, or even Zeus, that they were discovered by a good fisherman, name Dictys. He came upon the box, broke it open and took them home to his wife who was as kind as he. The two lived there for many years, Danaë being content to let her son follow the fisherman's humble trade. But in the end more trouble came. Polydectes, the ruler of the small island (and Dictys' brother) fell in love with her. He wanted her, but not her son (who was now fully grown), and he set himself to think of a way of getting rid of him.

Solar Image Gallery - Analemma
Strange as it may seem, only seven times has someone ever managed to successfully image the solar analemma as a multi-exposure on a single piece of film. For those not familiar with the term, an analemma is the figure "8" loop that results when one observes the position of the sun at the same time during the day over the course of a year. Due to the earth's tilt about its axis (23.45°) and its elliptical orbit about the sun, the location of the sun is not constant from day to day when observed at the same time on each day over the course of a full year. Furthermore, this loop will be inclined at different angles depending on one's geographical latitude.
Since the analemma is considered one of the most difficult and demanding astronomical phenomenon to image, I immediately set out on such a marathon during the summer of 2001 by pursuing a complete set of analemmas from 08:00:00 to 17:00:00 UT+2 (hourly intervals) as well as the special case of the perfectly vertical analemma on the meridian (12:28:16 UT+2). For complete details and analysis concerning the analemma on the southern meridian, the interested reader is referred to my article in Coelum Astronomia (Vol 60: 71-74, Feb/2003). The project's successful completion provided various firsts including the first analemma ever imaged in Greece; the first image ever of the perfectly vertical analemma; the first analemma(s) ever imaged during a single calendar year; the first to ever image more than one analemma; and the first to ever capture two analemmas on a single piece of 35mm film.

I wrote elsewhere about the Ethiopian royal family whose princess (Andromeda) was saved by Perseus. Here, I want to write more about this hero. Perseus was the son of Zeus and Danae (the daughter of Acrisius of Argos). As an infant he and his mother were cast into the sea in a box by Acrisius. Acrisius did this in response to a prophecy stating he would be killed by his own grandson. He felt somewhat guilty for his action, but preferred life with guilt to an innocent death. Perseus grew up to be a brave young man on the island of Seriphus, where the box had grounded. King Polydectes of Seriphus fell in love with beautiful Danae and for a long time wanted to abduct her. Perseus, however, remained always by her side. One day, the King tricked the young man into promising to obtain the head of Medusa, the only mortal among the Gorgons. (The Gorgons were portrayed as winged female creatures with hair consisting of snakes. Their heads had the power of turning all who looked upon them into stone). Aided by Hermes (the messenger) and Athena (the goddess of wisdom, fertility, the useful arts, and prudent warfare), Perseus pressed the Graiae (sisters of the Gorgons) into helping him. The sisters shared one eye and one tooth between them. He seized these items and refused to return them until they provided him with winged sandals (which enabled him to fly), the helmet of

    Perseus
Perseus was son of Zeus and Danae , grandson of Acrisius, who had been foretold that the son of Danae would kill him. After the boy was born Acrisius had Danae and Perseus thrown into the sea in a wooden chest. By the will of Zeus the chest was cast up on the shores of the island of Seriphos, where a fisherman, called Dictus, found them and took in his house. He rose Perseus as his own son. The King of the island Polydectes, brother of Dictus, fall in love with Danae and looked for a chance to get rid of Perseus. Polydectes challenged Perseus to fight the Gorgons . With the help of Athena and Hermes who first brought him to the sea nymphs to help him get armed, Perseus managed to behead the sleeping Medusa . He put her head in the special pouch bag and started home. The sisters of Medusa awoke, infuriated they looked for the murderer of their sister, but could not spot him. On the way back he saved Andromeda and with her returned to Seriphos. There he found his mother and his adopted father Dictus seeking refuge at the altars of the gods, because Polydectes had tried to rape Danae. Perseus showed Polydectes the head of Medusa and the tyrant was turned into stone. Perseus made Dictus the king of the island and left for Argos with Andromeda. Their he participated in games and when he threw the discus, he hit to death Acrisius, who was present at games as a spectator. Thus the prophecy of the oracle came true.
