J.C. Penney Life Insurance
A class action lawsuit charges that JCPenney Life Insurance Co. routinely bilked consumers like those below, drafting their bank accounts without proper authorization. Shayne of Cherokee AL (4/18/05):
I took out life insurance with J C Penney thru my Sears charge card. I had the insurance for over 3 or 4 years and they canceled it without a notice until a bill was sent individually from Sears on Feb 2, 2005. They have on the letter is was canceled in October. This was the first I had heard of it until I went back to look at my online payment notice on the Sears Website. Usually, JC Penny would take out every other month for the month before and the month of the bill. I am angry because of this. I have paid close to $1800.00 to $2000.00 over these past few years and now I'm having to find more life insurance. The was I look at it, the least JC Penny could have done was paid my bill from the time it was canceled until now. Danica of Burlington WI (6/8/04):
In 1997, as recently married grad students, we were contacted by First USA/JC Penney for a trial of JC Penney life insurance to be billed at $9.95/month to our (only) First USA credit card. We thought that sounded okay, and agreed. At the end of the three months, we had decided against it, and contacted them in the stated manner to cancel (documented).

GETTING STARTED: U.S. - ENGLAND CONNECTION
Chapter 1
from
THE PENNEY FAMILY THROUGH 300 YEARS:
DEPTFORD, KENT; SHEERNESS, ISLE OF SHEPPEY, KENT;
AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
An Early Interest My father, mother, grandfather and uncles often reminisced about members of the family. As children will do, I too often took little notice. Nonetheless an appreciation for our families' history was spawned in me. In the summer of my 15th or 16th year I began asking questions about family relationships in an organized manner and committed the information to paper in the form of family trees (see below). Looking back on these jottings today they look incredibly primitive - barely scratching the surface of what we now know. However, they were a start! No mention was ever made of great great grandpa George Scarnell in England, his comtemporaries, or his forebears when I was growing up. The only thing I knew was that the ancestors had been shipwrights and had come from the Isle of Sheppey, located somewhere in England. Even great Grandpa William Henry was only spoken of occasionally. My Dad was just twelve when he died so what he remembered was limited, and Grandpa George seemed reluctant to talk much about him. Thus, while we knew a rich lore about relatively recent members of the family, nothing was known about the Sheerness or Deptford eras. England 1977 After landing a new professorial position in the Department of Physiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, in 1977, and selling my house in Oak Park, Illinois, my oldest son Loren and I flew to England and Europe for one month. While the official reason for the trip was that of giving research talks at Nijmegen University in Holland and at Halle in East Germany, as well as attending a physiology meeting at Churchill College, Cambridge, it was also my intention to spend a few days snooping around Sheerness (I had been there once before, briefly one evening in the early 70's, but learned nothing). We found a comfortable bed-and-breakfast in the house of Mrs. Clark, on Trinity Rd. behind the purple door, just off Broadway. I questioned the local merchants about the name Penney, read our name on the clock tower (W.J. Penney), visited the local library, etc. all in an effort to discover what I could.

Gimme Shelter: Test Excavations at Rockhouse Cave (3CN20) in Petit Jean State Park By
George Sabo III
Arkansas Archeological Survey The purpose of the test excavations in Rockhouse Cave was to determine what kinds of archeological deposits existed beneath the floor of the shelter, what condition (disturbed or intact) these deposits were in, and what kinds of material remains these deposits contained. This information was required by Petit Jean State Park in order to plan effectively for the preservation of the site. Consequently, a cooperative program involving members of the Survey, the Society, and Petit Jean State Park was implemented. Description of the excavations and a preliminary assessment of our findings can be most easily summarized by individual floor space areas tested within the shelter. These areas are indicated by the letters A - E on Figure 1. Figure 1. Excavation Plan Map

Registered Charity No 261751 WORKING STEAM: STANIER 8F's A MAJOR NEW WORK ABOUT STANIER 8F LOCOMOTIVES WRITTEN BY SOCIETY MEMBERS The Stanier 8F Locomotive Society is pleased to offer for sale copies of a major work on 8F's. To introduce this excellent book some extracts from some published reviews follow:- "...for those who want a nostalgia fix or want to remember for a few moments the times when Britain had railways that worked, then this book should be standard issue on library shelves. And if you are a camera enthusiast your eyes will drink in images captured by some of Britain's best railway photographers" Burnley Express "The captions are to a good standard, as is the reproduction and printing. Three pleasant overseas views are included too. I had many favourite views in this album, which is also a good reference source for modellers as very often the wider scene - including so many railway "details" - is pictured. Three views on the GCR are included in the album, which is sure to be popular." Main Line Magazine "One of the great steam railway engines of all time, Sir William Stanier's unromantically designated 8F, was so significant that it still has an enthusiastic locomotive society dedicated to its preservation. Now, there is a well deserved literary and colourful, pictorial tribute to the locomotives...Many of the photographs used in the book were taken on what was essentially the 8Fs home patch, the north west - and so the scenery as well as the trains provide great interest. For all who remain fascinated by the age of steam this book is a treasure trove of nostalgia.

60. JC Penney Credit Services - Ruins Credit Report

JC Penney Credit Services - ruins credit report
Due to an error in the JC Penney Credit Services department, my credit report has now been tarnished. A year ago we changed our address, moving from one state to another. A couple months ago I purchased some items from JCPenney. I went back to buy something last month and I was advised that I was unauthorized to use the credit card. I immediately went up to the credit desk and found out that I was 2 months late making a payment. I called the credit services department and found the reason was that they had sent my bill to my old address.
I proceded to give them all the updated information (again) and told them to send me a bill as soon as possible. A couple of days later I started getting collection calls for JC Penney, harrassing me about paying my bill. I advised them that I would pay in full (a whole $150.00- obviously not a huge sum) as soon as I received a bill. After 2 weeks, they had still failed to mail me a bill, so I wrote them a letter on January 11th, 2005. Within a week I received a bill that also included late fees. I paid the bill in full the date I received it (1/15/2005). JC Penney did reply to my letter with a scripted, "sorry but you are out of luck" letter. Since we are buying a house my credit report came up.
