The failure of Pope John Paul

A simplistic vision contributed to the drift away from the church, writes Tom Scott. Australia's only elector for the coming conclave to choose a new pope, Cardinal George Pell, is quoted in the media saying he hopes the next pope will follow in the philosophical footsteps of his predecessor. "The Pope made Catholics feel secure," he said. "That's certainly the way that I feel and that's certainly the way that most Catholics would feel. Those who want radical change realised that they had no hope while he was in charge and I hope that with the next pope, there'll be a similar sense of security." It is questionable that most Catholics do feel this way. Across the Western world about 85 per cent of baptised Catholics no longer participate regularly. This figure is up from about 40 to 45 per cent since the 1960s and has been climbing steadily since the end of the First World War. The exit in the past 40 years, including the time the church was been under the shepherding care of Pope John Paul II, has been alarming. The challenge seems to be between two essentially incompatible views of what this whole "Catholic religious" endeavour is about.

John Paul II: a Pope who has changed the world

Josef Stalin once famously dismissed a caution against offending the Vatican by asking: "How many divisions has the Pope?" John Paul gave a definitive, if belated, answer to that question. Karol Wojtyla made history just by being elected Pope. When he succeeded to the throne of St Peter on October 16, 1978, he became the first non-Italian to occupy it in more than 450 years. That alone signalled that the pontificate of John Paul II, the reign name Wojtyla took in tribute to his short-lived immediate predecessor, would be different. And so it has proved to be, for the Catholic Church and the wider world. The papacy is a unique instrument of human governance. No other institution combines spiritual and political authority in quite the same way and with the same global reach, and no other can claim a continuous history stretching back to antiquity. Even by the measure of that long history, however, the pontificate that is now coming to an end stands out. That first visit to Poland was only one of many journeys, to every continent, in John Paul's pontificate, the third-longest in history. He has been, without doubt, the most travelled pope. On his journeys he continued to speak in defence of human rights and human dignity, as he had done in Poland. It was a rhetoric that his critics, inside and outside the church, came to think was sometimes belied by his own practice, and it is fair to say that John Paul II has been a man of contradictions: a courageous opponent of totalitarianism, he nonetheless has shown little sympathy for the pluralism of Western liberal democracies. But nothing, including an attempted assassination in 1981, deterred him from speaking his mind, and even in the visible decline of his later years he was among the most prominent critics of the US-led coalition's invasion of Iraq. His passing will deprive the world of one of the all-too-few leaders willing to challenge the presumptions of power politics.

Town of Pelham History Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester County. Thomas Pell signed a treaty in 1654 with the Siwanoy Indians to buy what is not only the Town of Pelham but is all of the borough of the Bronx and the land along Long Island Sound north to the Rye border and inland to the Bronx river. Pell named his manor "Pelham" in honor of his tutor, Pelham Burton. Thomas Pell's nephew, Sir John Pell, was the first of the Pells to live in Pelham Manor. He inherited the land in 1670 and until the American Revolution only the Pell family lived in Pelham.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, October 6, 2004 Tierney: New Report Shows Failure to Increase Pell Grants Harms Students from Massachusetts’ Sixth Congressional District Washington, DC The failure of the Bush Administration and the GOP Majority in Congress to expand the popular Pell Grant program has made college less affordable for thousands in Massachusetts, including the Sixth Congressional District, said a report, released today by U.S. Congressman John F. Tierney (D-Salem). The Minority staff of the House Government Reform Committee, of which Congressman Tierney is a member, completed the report. Tierney, who is also the only New England Member on the House Education and Workforce Committee, is a tireless advocate for making college more affordable and has introduced the House Democrats’ alternative, called the College Affordability and Accountability Act (H.R. 3519), to the proposed Republican higher education bill. The report shows that in 2004, Pell Grants were awarded to 6,700 students in the Sixth Congressional District, including 1,100 students who received the maximum grant of $4,050. Statewide, approximately 78,500 students received Pell Grants, with 14,900 of these students receiving the maximum award. The report says, "Despite the President’s 2000 campaign promise to raise the maximum Pell Grant award to $5,100 per year, the President’s latest budget request would freeze the maximum Pell Grant award to $4,050 for the third straight year. The result has been a sharp reduction in the value of the Pell Grants for the neediest college students."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 30, 2002 Tierney Working to Keep College Affordable As high school seniors head for the homestretch and look forward to a summer off before college, Congressman John Tierney has stepped up his work with his colleagues on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to keep college affordable for all American families. “A quality college education is the cornerstone of the American dream,” said Tierney, New England’s sole representative on the Committee. “A college degree opens the door to job opportunity and professional fulfillment. Over a lifetime, a college degree is worth $1 million in increased earnings. Education is a partnership among federal and state governments and families. Our challenge here in Congress is to do our part to make the American dream affordable for all families.” “As a practical matter,” he said, “that means strengthening federal policies that provide adequate support for assistance like Pell Grants while zealously guarding against any attempt to increase interest rates on student loans, often the only means of college affordability for hard-working middle-class students.” “Congress should substantially increase the federal investment in student aid,” Tierney said. “Yet the White House budget for fiscal year 2003 trims the principal need-based student aid program - Pell Grants - by 100,000 students and would allow a maximum grant that is $300 below what is needed just to keep up with inflation. That is not good public policy. When the House debates education appropriations, I will fight to restore needed funding for Pell Grants in the federal budget.”

7 December 2003 John the Baptist, the Son of priest Zachary and Elizabeth cousin of Our Lady was born 6 months before Jesus. Luke’s Gospel tells us Gabriel the Archangel appeared to Zachary in the temple announcing that Elizabeth would conceive a son. Gabriel told Zachary to give his promised son the name of John, which mean “Yahweh is gracious”. He would lead many of the sons of Israel to their Lord and would walk in the power and spirit of Elias. In his canticle called the Bendedictus, Zachary sings of his son as “prophet of the Most High”. According to tradition John was born 6 months before Jesus in the town of Ain Karim, about three-and-a-half miles west of Jerusalem. Luke also relates that John spent his youth in the desert. John appeared in the region of the Jordan as an ascetic and a preacher of penance. His principal task was to announce the arrival of Jesus Christ as Messiah and to baptize him. He appeared clothed in camel’s hair, the traditional garb of the prophets; just as Elijah had.

The 9 acres upon which this mansion sits is part of what was once an empire of 9,000 acres owned by Connecticut physician, Thomas Pell. In 1654 he purchased the property from the Siwanoy Indians. In 1666 he received the King's Charter to create the Manor of Pelham. In 1675 Pell's nephew and heir built a manor house which was home to four generations of Pells until its destruction during the American Revolution. Ann Pell, daughter of the fourth Lord of the Manor, married her cousin of Huguenot descent, John Bartow, who acquired the property after the Revolution. The property changed hands a couple of times, ultimately to be owned by Robert Bartow, a grandson of John. New York City bought the mansion in 1888, and of more than a dozen architecturally important homes overlooking Long Island Sound, Bartow-Pell is the sole survivor. The newly restored three-story Carriage House contains a carriage stable, hay loft, and tack room for a multi-purpose interpretive facility for the museum. The neo-classic stone mansion is a masterpiece of architecture with its richly creative interior Greek Revival details and its elegant freestanding elliptical staircase. The 19th century Empire decor is an example of the finest quality found in New York homes at that time.

IU President IU expert says proposed funding for federal Pell Grants remains too low The federal government's education budget proposal for 2004 continues to shortchange the Pell Grant program, according to Edward St. John, a higher education policy expert in the Indiana University School of Education, who said Indiana is one of the few states with success in addressing this situation. President Bush has proposed an increase in spending on Pell Grants for the next fiscal year of $1.9 billion to a total of $12.7 billion, but with no change in the Pell maximum of $4,000 per student. The Pell Grant is the primary federal need-based student grant program. "The Bush administration has fallen short of its goal of treating Pell as a priority when it fails to increase the maximum amount available to students," said St. John, who issued a report through the IU Education Policy Center last May that was critical of the Pell program. All I am opposing is setting the setuid bit on helper tools, because
there are few operations that require root or that should be done lightly. I don't think that there are, or should be, tools which run as root at any invocation. What if an exploit is discovered in that tool, running that it can exploit, though thankfully the time-window and code-windows are small, as it is a helper tool. If an operation should be allowed by any user of the system, which is what a setuid tool does, then "The security model employed by Mac OS X's BSD later" should be changed to allow it. For example, by using group ownership information one can avoid running as root at all, which

libwwwfile depends on a symbol in libwwwdir which depends on a symbol in libwwwfile. How do i fix this? I know i can simply add the object file for those symbols to one or the other, but then i will get all kinds of 'multiply defined' warngins for the rest of my life. ;-) Is there a way around this? Has this been fixed in CVS? I am trying to prebind so i CANNOT have ANY undefined symbols. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanx! JP God is dead, now the war shall never end.
