John Pell 's father was also named John Pell and his mother was Mary Holland. Mary was from Halden in Kent and her husband was from Southwick where their son John, the subject of this biography, was born. He was the second of his parents two sons but by the time he was six years old he was an orphan, his father dying in 1616 and his mother in the following year. John Pell senior had a fine library and this proved valuable to John junior as he grew up. After attending Steyning School in Sussex, which was a free school, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1624. He received his B.A. in 1628 and his M.A. in 1630. He was by this time an expert in Latin and Greek and, although we know little of his training in mathematics, we do know that he corresponded with Briggs about logarithms in the year in which he graduated with his B.A.

22. Pell
Worked on algebra and number theory, gave a table of factors of all integers up to 100000 in 1668. pell's equation is y^2 = ax^2 + 1, where a is a nonsquare integer.

Meticulously researched and clearly written, it also raises the crucial matter of how unsubstantiated allegations of sexual abuse can be used as a weapon against those who are perceived as ideological and political opponents."
Professor Ross Fitzgerald This is the first biography of George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney. It is a book about strong leadership, and about the dangers strong leaders face today if they espouse unfashionable views. In recent decades a war has been waged within the Catholic Church between traditionalists and those who want to drain its teachings and institutions of much of their meaning. This is the story of that struggle, told through the life of a leading combatant, George Pell, who has spent much of his adult life battling attempts to, in his words, "trivialise Jesus Christ". Tess Livingstone is the editor of the opinion page at the Courier Mail in Brisbane. She is an experienced journalist who has worked in London, Canberra and Brisbane. For this book she visited many parts of Victoria, Sydney, Oxford and Rome, and interviewed over fifty people, including many of Pell's opponents.

    Interview with Cardinal George Pell
March 11, 2004 By John L. Allen, Jr.
Rome NCR 's Vatican Correspondent John L. Allen Jr. interviewed Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia, March 11. Pell chairs the Vox Clara Committee, which advises the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Vatican's liturgical agency, on English translations. NCR : How did you come to be chair of Vox Clara?
    Pell:
Very obviously, I was asked by the congregation whether I would consent to work on such a committee. I said yes, and I finished up chairing. Is liturgy something in which you had a particular interest?
Well, you certainly couldn't describe me as a liturgist by any stretch of the imagination. Is liturgy a bit like war … too important to be left to the liturgists?
You said that, but that's nicely put. I did write my thesis on early church history, second and third century stuff, so I've got a very solid grasp of Latin. I had a long history of concern about the accuracy of the liturgical translations going back plus or minus 15 years. Given that one of the congregation's main concerns was fidelity to the Latin, it makes sense you would be someone to whom they would turn.
