Cardinal George Pell studied for the priesthood at Corpus Christi College, Werribee, and Propaganda Fide College, Rome, and was ordained a Catholic priest at St Peter's Basilica in Rome in 1966. He graduated from Monash with a Master of Education in 1982. After working in various parishes across Victoria, he was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Titular Bishop of Scala in 1987. He served as director of the Aquinas Campus of the Institute of Catholic Education from 1974-84 and as Principal of the Institute of Catholic Education from 1981-84. In 1996, Pope John Paul II announced Cardinal Pell's appointment as Archbishop of Melbourne, and in 2001 appointed Cardinal Pell Archbishop of Sydney. The Pope announced his elevation to the Sacred College of Cardinals in 2003, and created him Cardinal Priest of the Church of Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello in Rome. | |
