Early Palatine Families of New York by Marian S. Henry Posted July 25, 2003 I. Introduction II. Arrival of Palatines into New York, 1709-1710 These Palatines were not the first group of German-speaking settlers to arrive in New York. An earlier group of forty-one persons (ten men, ten women, and twenty-one children) led by Evangelical minister Joshua Kockerthal, was sent to New York by royal order on May 10, 1708. Filby lists the arrival in 1709 of Joshua Kockerthal, age 39, his wife Sibylla Charlotta, 39, and children Benigna Sibylla, 10, Christian Joshua, 7, and Susanna Sibylla, 3. Rupp

Number of needy students drops at top universities
Sunday, November 21, 2004 By Bill Schackner, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Carnegie Mellon University once taught blacksmithing and drafting to laborers' sons. It fit the technical school's vision of giving Pittsburgh's mill workers a leg up on life. Steve Mellon, Post-Gazette
Ariel Haughton, a junior at Allegheny College in Meadville, is from a low-income family and is getting a shot at a degree from a selective campus. Two-thirds of her $32,000 in yearly college costs are being covered by grants, campus aid and scholarships.

Poor students losing ground , in .pdf format Trends in student aid A century later, the place has blossomed into an elite campus where ever-more accomplished students push the envelope in fields from robotics to acting. But along the way it has lost something some of those needy students. The poor are getting harder to find there and on other highly selective campuses nationwide, judging by the number receiving federal Pell Grants, which are targeted to low-income families. Since the early 1990s, the share of Carnegie Mellon undergraduates with them has declined from about 20 percent to 12 percent, or 256 fewer students with median family incomes of under $30,000.

    ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY

4 May 2003 In the 1950s a young unmarried Pole wrote a play entitled The Jeweller's Shop on how the sexual love between a man and a woman develops into something more durable. What causes this love to die so often? How does the quality of parental love affect the children especially when they approach marriage? Love is a four letter word sometimes covering a multitude of sins. When we speak about love in English, we are hampered by a limited vocabulary. The ancient Greeks who wrote more than 2000 years ago have four different words for different types of love. We often use one word "love", with perhaps "charity" as a second string. Some American research claims that eros or passionate love, "that strange bewilderment that overtakes one person on account of another person" never lasts more than a to 30 months. After that the object of the love is changed or the love itself changes for better or worse.
