Georg Simon Ohm
By: Amy Dixon
Georg Simon Ohm was born to Johann Wolfgang Ohm and Maria Elizabeth Beck in 1787 in Erlangen. His father, Johann Wolfgang, was a self-taught man in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy brought this knowledge to his children. Georg Simon learned more science from his father than he did at Erlangen Gymnasium. Ohm entered the University of Erlangen but lost funding for it by his father after three semesters because Georg was too interested in student life. He then became a mathematics teacher in a school in Gottstadt bei Nydau. Ohm wished to go with Karl Christian von Lagsdrof to the University of Heidlelberg to continue his mathematics education, but Lagsdrof suggested that Ohm teach himself. Ohm studied Euler, Laplace, Lacroix, Lagrange, Legendre, Laplace, Biot, and Poisson and taught himself much mathematics. He eventually received a doctorate from Erlangen and started working towards his lifetime goal of gaining a high position in a university. Ohm taught math and physics at a poor school in Bamberg where he wrote an elementary book on teaching geometry. In 1817, He became a physics and math teacher at the Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne where he had access to a laboratory and began experiments after the discovery of electromagnetism by Oersted. Ohm began to seriously experiment and publish after he realized it would be what it would take to reach his life goal. His first paper was written in 1825, which describes the decrease in electromagnetic force produced by an increased wire length. He also wrote two papers that expanded Fourier’s study of heat conduction that gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits.

Dr. Anna Tymon
Post-Doctoral Scientist: molecular plant virology Research programme Recent publications As a molecular biologist, I have been involved in the development of molecular techniques for detection, identification and phylogenetic studies of both plant and aphid pathogens. Pathogens investigated have included phytoplasmas (non-culturable prokaryotes infecting a range of plants) and more recently the aphid fungus Pandora neoaphidis (an obligate parasite with potential as a bio-control agent). My work now involves molecular investigations into the soil-borne mosaic viruses of cereals (especially wheat and barley)

Every year I've had the privilege to meet with the many students and their teachers from schools throughout our district when they visit Washington, D.C. I've focused my education efforts in Congress on five key issues which I believe to be fundamental to the education of our children and which fit with my goal of having a world-class education system for our kids: (1) the No Child Left Behind Act, (2) the growing costs of higher education, (3) Head Start, (4) AmeriCorps, and (5) the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

For more information, send e-mail to permissions@pupress.princeton.edu This file is also available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format Chapter 1 FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The women appearing in this chapter, inspirations for many currently active mathematicians, received their doctorates before 1960. Their stories look back through time, arranged in reverse chronological order of the women's births. It is appropriate to begin with reminiscences of Olga Taussky Todd, namesake of the conference that spurred the compilation of this book. Her charmingly informal remarks are augmented by excerpts from a memorial article about her. Later in the book, two articles give more formal descriptions of her life and work. Julia Robinson's mathematics led to her election as the first woman mathematician in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS); she was also the first woman elected president of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). In 1980 she was the second woman to present the prestigious AMS Colloquium Lectures. The first woman to do so, fifty-three years earlier in 1927, was Anna Johnson Pell Wheeler. Among the few women who earned a doctorate in mathematics in the first half of the twentieth century, Pell Wheeler was singular in receiving such recognition for her mathematics. She is likely best known for her active mentoring of other women. While chair of the mathematics department at Bryn Mawr College, she brought two refugees to her institution: Emmy Noether, then an established mathematician, and also, to work with Noether, the young Taussky Toddthe women whose lives bracket this chapter. Noether is indisputably among the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century. In recognition of the importance of her work, the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) has sponsored since 1980 the annual Noether Lecture series at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM). Robinson and Taussky Todd are two of the outstanding senior women mathematicians who have delivered these lectures.
