Charles Sanders Peirce
Charles Sanders Peirce, one of America's most important and most original philosophers, the founder of pragmatism , and a pioneering theorist of Semiotics, was born on September 10, 1839 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His writings extend from about 1857 until near his death, a period of approximately 57 years. His published works run to about 12,000 printed pages and his known unpublished manuscripts run to about 80,000 handwritten pages. The topics on which he wrote have an immense range, from mathematics and the hard sciences at one extreme, to economics, psychology, anthroplogy, history of science, and the theory of signs, at the other extreme. Peirce's father Benjamin was Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University and was one of the founders of the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as well as one of the founders of the Smithsonian Institution. The department of mathematics at Harvard was essentially built by Benjamin. From Benjamin Peirce Charles Sanders Peirce received most of the substance of his early education as well as a good deal of intellectual encouragement and stimulation. Benjamin's didactic technique mostly took the form of setting interesting problems and checking Charles's solutions of them, and in this instructional atmosphere Charles learned his lifelong habit of thinking through problems entirely on his own. To this habit, perhaps, is to be attributed Charles Peirce's originality.

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), a uniquely American philosopher and scientist, is of seminal importance for modern thought. He was a tireless and brilliant thinker whose extensive writings have received international attention for over a century. Remarkably, however, much of what Peirce wrote remains in manuscript form, unpublished and in significant disarray. There has never been a comprehensive edition of Peirce's writings organized chronologically and edited according to current scholarly practices. The Peirce Edition Project was established in 1976 and has been part of IUPUI's School of Liberal Arts since 1983. Its mission is to organize and date the manuscripts and to produce an approved scholarly edition of Peirce's writings. This work is assisted by an internationally recognized team of advisors and contributors. Six volumes (of a projected thirty) have been published by Indiana University Press and plans are underway for a parallel electronic edition.

Peirce, Charles Sanders
Encyclopedia Article Peirce, Charles Sanders (1839-1914), American philosopher and physicist, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University. In 1861 Peirce was appointed to the U.S. Coast Survey. Between 1864 and 1884 he lectured intermittently on logic and philosophy at Johns Hopkins and Harvard universities, and in 1877 he became the first American representative to the International Geodetic Congress. In 1861 Peirce began a series of experiments with pendulums that contributed greatly to the determination of the density and shape of the earth, and also an investigation of the measurement of light waves. In 1867 he turned his attention to the system of logic created by the British logician and mathematician George Boole, and he worked on extending and transforming Boolean algebra until 1885. Peirce is best known for his philosophical system, later called pragmatism. According to his pragmatic philosophy, no object or concept possesses inherent validity or importance. Its significance lies only in the practical effects resulting from its use or application. The “truth” of an idea or object, therefore, can be measured by empirical investigation of its usefulness. The concept was expanded by the American philosophers William James and John Dewey, and it profoundly influenced modern philosophical and sociological thought. Peirce's works include

Harvard, 1859; son of Benjamin Peirce . Except for occasional lectures he renounced the regimen of academic life and was in government service with the Geodetic Survey for many years. Regarding logic as the beginning of all philosophical study, Peirce felt that the meaning of an idea was to be found in an examination of the consequences to which the idea would lead. This principle was published in 1878 in Popular Science Monthly, using the term pragmatism , which was later employed, with acknowledgment, by his friend William James A major thinker in a number of fields, Peirce is also recognized as the originator of the modern form of semiotics and the first American experimental psychologist. His influence is clearly seen in the works of Josiah Royce and John Dewey , but recognition of his importance was delayed because of the scarcity of published works. He had a difficult and tumultuous life, died in poverty, and left many fragmentary manuscripts. The only book published during his lifetime was

Peirce’s theory of signs is a theory of reasoning and of cognition which asserts that all modes of thinking depend on the use of signs. Peirce argues that every thought is a sign, and that every act of reasoning consists of the interpretation of signs. Signs function as mediators between the external world of objects and the internal world of ideas. Signs may be mental representations of objects, and objects may be known by means of perception of their signs. Peirce thus defines ‘semiosis’ as the process by which representations of objects function as signs. Semiosis is a process of cooperation between signs, their objects, and their ‘interpretants’ (i.e. their mental representations). ‘Semiotic’ (i.e. the science of signs) is the study of semiosis and is an inquiry into the conditions which are necessary in order for representations of objects to function as signs. Peirce describes logic as the science of the laws of signs, and divides logic into three areas of study: 1) ‘critical logic’ (i.e. the study of the relations of signs to their objects), 2) ‘speculative grammar’ (i.e. the study of the 'meaning' of signs), and 3) ‘speculative rhetoric’ or ‘methodeutic’ (i.e. the study of the relation of signs to their interpretants). Logic as semiotic is the theory of the conditions which determine the truth of signs, and is a normative science, in that it is a theory of the kind of reasoning which should be employed in order to discover truth.
