Excerpt
Charles Sanders Santiago Peirce. How to deal with this incredibly brilliant, multisided, quirky genius? The trackers of the Peircean labyrinth are numerous and various, and many have either engaged the Minotaur and been slain, or sighted him, bolted, broken Ariadne's thread, never to be seen again. Some are just stunned by the sight of him. We think, for example, of the fine scholar, Max Fisch, who worked for forty years collecting and collating Peirce materials from hither, thither, and yon. Entrusted with these to write an intellectual biography, he never did produce the book (though some important articles did materialize). Or we call up a vivid memory: forty years ago in a seminar on American philosophy taught by Sidney Hook, the professor introduced an advanced, well-qualified graduate student, just returned from abroad, who discoursed briefly on the dissertation he was about to write on Peirce. Forty years later, no dissertation, no Ph.D. I, myself, have published for thirty-seven years on American thought, been strongly influenced by Peirce (particularly his realistic view on universals and his scorching attack on Descartes's psycho/physical dualism, introspectionism, nominalism), but this review is my first attempt at an essay exclusively on him.

    BENJAMIN PEIRCE
PEIRCE, BENJAMIN (1809I 88o), American mathematician and astronomer, was born at Salem, Massachusetts, on the 4th of April 1809. Graduating at Harvard College in 1829, he became mathematical tutor there in 1831 and professor in 1833. He had already assisted Nathaniel Bowditch in his translation of the Mcanique cleste, and now produced a series of mathematical textbooks characterized by the brevity and terseness which made his teaching unattractive to inapt pupils. Young men of talent, on the contrary, found his instruction most stimulating, and after Bowditchs death in 1838 Peirce stood first among American mathematicians. His researches into the perturbations of Uranus and Neptune (Proc. Amer. Acad., 1848) gave him a wider fame; he became in I849 consulting astronomer to the American Nautical Almanac, and for this work prepared new tables of the moon (1852). A discussion of the equilibrium of Saturns rings led him to conclude in 1855 that they must be of a fluid nature. From 1867 to 1874 he was superintendent of the Coast Survey. In 1857 he published his best known work, the System of Analytical Mechanics, which was, however, surpassed in brilliant originality by his Linear Associative Algebra (lithographed privately in a few copies, 1870; reprinted in the Amer. Journ. Math., 1882). He died at Cambridge, Mass., on the 6th of October 1880. See New Amer. Cyclopae.dia (Ripley and Dana), vol. xiii. (1861); T. J. J. Harvard, 1859; son of Benjamin Peirce . Except for occasional lectures he renounced the regimen of academic life and was in government service with the Geodetic Survey for many years. Regarding logic as the beginning of all philosophical study, Peirce felt that the meaning of an idea was to be found in an examination of the consequences to which the idea would lead. This principle was published in 1878 in Popular Science Monthly, using the term pragmatism , which was later employed, with acknowledgment, by his friend William James A major thinker in a number of fields, Peirce is also recognized as the originator of the modern form of semiotics and the first American experimental psychologist. His influence is clearly seen in the works of Josiah Royce and John Dewey , but recognition of his importance was delayed because of the scarcity of published works. He had a difficult and tumultuous life, died in poverty, and left many fragmentary manuscripts. The only book published during his lifetime was

1825 - Philosophy of Systematic Scientific Observations and Elimination of Error "Absolute mathematical accuracy exists only in the mind of man. All practical applications are mere approximations, more or less successful. And when all has been done that science and art can unite in practice, the supposition of some defects in the instruments will always be prudent. It becomes therefore the duty of an observer to combine and invent, upon theoretical principals, methods of systematical observations, by which the influence of any error of his instruments may be neutralised, either by direct means, or more generally by compensation.” In the Principal Documents (1825) by Ferdinand Hassler, Founder of the United States Survey of the Coast, Published by New Series, Philadelphia. p.390. 1839 - On Dredging the Depths of the Ocean "Song of the Dredge”, presented by Edward Forbes to the British Association at its annual meeting in 1839.
