Can anything be done to rescue you from your professorship?
George Bernard Shaw to Karl Pearson, 20 June 1893
(Pearson Papers 627)
BEGINNING IN 1892, when he took up statistics as his scientific vocation, Karl Pearson devoted himself relentlessly to a project of almost universal quantification. This work, the invention of a mathematical field of statistics, defined one of the landmark transitions in the history of the sciences, or indeed of public rationality. Until then he had been a thoroughly restless intellectual, as involved in politics, literature, and history as in science. These studies and experiences set up his wide-ranging career as a quantifier, and at the same time created conditions for enduring doubts about this mission, to which he thereafter dedicated his career, and about the form of society it helped to fashion. Having sought through philosophy, history, marital partnership, scientific method, and statistics to discipline and socialize the egoistic self, he came increasingly to fear that the modern project of specialized science would fragment selfhood and suppress individuality.

BIOGRAPHY 14.1 Karl Pearson
Karl Pearson was born in London, England, the son of a successful trial lawyer. While attending University College, London, and then the universities of Heidelberg, Berlin, and Cambridge (where he received a law degree), he exhibited a phenomenal range of interests, moving from mathematics, physics, and philosophy to religion, history, and law to German folklore, socialism, and Darwinism! Much of this study had little to do with things for which Pearson is now remembered, but early in his life he was simply overwhelmed with all there is to know and noted that "not one subject in the universe is unworthy of study." Pearson's interest in analytical statistics was kindled only in the late 1880s after he had become a professor of applied mathematics and mechanics at University College. (Later, he was named the first Galton professor of eugenics there.) His 1892 book, the Grammar of Science , illustrates his growing conviction that analytical statistics lies at the foundation of all knowledge. Going beyond Adolphe Quetelet (Biography 4.2), the "father of statistics," who believed that almost all phenomena can be described by the normal distribution (provided only that the number of cases examined is large enough), Pearson derived a system of generalized frequency curves that recognized the importance of asymmetrical distributions. (In that connection, he noted that true variability among individuals was a concept very different from chance variation among errors made while estimating a single value. He introduced the term

    A Panel
When I was a boy the New York Daily Mirror ran on its masthead the injunction from John 8:32: "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make ye free." I was never too young to miss the irony of that statement on a Hearst newspaper, but I felt it as an irony that didn't force me to question the ideal the masthead affirmed. I didn't, however, know then that the apostle John and William Hearst were affirming a fundamental tenet of late-nineteenth-century positivism. The great Enlightenment ideal, the commitment to knowledge and rationality as a means to progressive improvement of the human condition, found one of its last important outlets in positivism. Let me red-facedly admit thatdespite a lifetime of rebuffsI have not given up that commitment. Karl Pearson participated vigorously in it. In his 1892
