Peano, Giuseppe
Giuseppe Peano, b. Aug. 27, 1858, d. April 20, 1932, was an Italian mathematician best known for his work in symbolic LOGIC. He, himself, however, considered his work in mathematical analysis to be of greater significance. Peano studied mathematics at the University of Turin and joined the faculty there (1880), becoming a professor in 1890. In 1889 Peano published his famous postulates, called Peano axioms, which defined the natural numbers in terms of a set of elements. In 1891 he founded his journal, Rivista di matematica, devoted largely to logic and the foundations of mathematics. Peano was also interested in universal, or international, languages and created the artificial language Interlingua (see LANGUAGES, ARTIFICIAL). He compiled the vocabulary from a synthesis of English, French, German, and Latin. Author: J. W. Dauben Bibliography: Kennedy, Hubert C., Giuseppe Peano (1974).

Giuseppe Peano
Peano was the founder of symbolic logic and his interests centred on the foundations of mathematics and on the development of a formal logical language. Peano studied mathematics at the University of Turin and joined the staff there in 1880, being appointed to a chair in 1890. In 1889 Peano published his famous axioms, called Peano axioms, which defined the natural numbers in terms of sets. In 1891 he founded Rivista di matematica , a journal devoted mainly to logic and the foundations of mathematics. In 1886 Peano proved that if f(x,y) is continuous then the first order differential equation dy/dx = f(x,y) has a solution. The existence of solutions with stronger hupothesis on f had been given earlier by Cauchy and then Lipschitz . Four years later Peano showed that the solutions were not unique, giving an example. Peano introduced the basic elements of geometric calculus and gave new definitions for the length of an arc and for the area of a curved surface. He invented 'space-filling' curves in 1890, these are surjective mappings from [0,1] onto the unit square. Hilbert , in 1891, described similar space-filling curves.

April 1932 in Turin. Career
His first major work, a textbook on calculus which was credited to Genocchi, was published in . On July 27 he married Carola Crosio. The following year Peano's father died. Peano also published his first book dealing with mathematical logic, this book was the first to use the symbols for union and intersection of sets as we now know them.

Dear Walter, and other friends,
There seems to be certain disagreement as to whether Hilbert was
sufficiently acquainted with contemporary Italian mathematics before his
"Grundlagen der Geometrie" (GG) was published in 1899. It has been noticed
time and again that the great Peano is absent in that 'ars magna'.
In a recent article [1], dedicated to David Fowler on the occasion of his
60th birthday, Jeremy Gray remarks:
Toepell [2] shows that although Hilbert did not read Italian
easily, he listed Peano's book on the Grassmann calculus in
its German translation [3] as one of the books on the axioms of geometry. Toepell therefore disagrees with Morris Kline's

August 27, 1858 - April 20, 1932 Giuseppe Peano was born on a farm near the village of Spinetta in Piedmont, Northwestern Italy. In 1876 he enrolled at the University of Turin in the same region of Italy. He graduated in 1880 with 'High Honours' and began his teaching career. Peano was a University assistant between 1880 and 1882, first to Enrico D'Ovidio and then to Angelo Genocchi (the chair of Infinitesimal Calculus). In 1881 Peano published his first paper. In the course of his life, Peano had over two hundred papers and books published (most of them on mathematics). By 1882, due to Genocchi's ill health, Peano was in charge of the Infinitesimal Calculus course where the students made fun of him because of an inability to pronounce the letter 'r'.
