Giuseppe Peano 's parents worked on a farm and Giuseppe was born in the farmhouse 'Tetto Galant' about 5 km from Cuneo. He attended the village school in Spinetta then he moved up to the school in Cuneo, making the 5km journey there and back on foot every day. His parents bought a house in Cuneo but his father continued to work the fields at Tetto Galant with the help of a brother and sister of Giuseppe, while his mother stayed in Cuneo with Giuseppe and his older brother. Giuseppe's mother had a brother who was a priest and lawyer in Turin and, when he realised that Giuseppe was a very talented child, he took him to Turin in 1870 for his secondary schooling and to prepare him for university studies. Giuseppe took exams at Ginnasio Cavour in 1873 and then was a pupil at Liceo Cavour from where he graduated in 1876 and, in that year, he entered the University of Turin. Among Peano's teachers in his first year at the University of Turin was D'Ovidio who taught him analytic geometry and algebra. In his second year he was taught calculus by

Peano, Giuseppe Italian mathematician who was a pioneer in symbolic logic. His concise logical definitions of natural numbers were devised in order to derive a complete system of notation for logic. He also discovered a curve that fills topological space.
Peano was born near Cuneo, Piedmont, and studied at Turin. On graduating, he joined the staff of the university and remained there for the rest of his life, first becoming a professor there in 1890. He was also professor at Turin Military Academy 1886-1901.
Peano's first work in logic, published in 1888, contained his rigorously axiomatically derived postulates for natural numbers. He acknowledged his debt for some of the work to German mathematician Richard Dedekind . Some of Peano's work was used by English philosopher Bertrand Russell
Peano also applied the axiomatic method to other fields, such as geometry, first in 1889 and again in 1894. A treatise on this work contained the beginnings of geometrical calculus. Peano provided new definitions of the length of an arc of a curve and of the area of a surface.
Formulario mathematico 1895-1908, comprising his work and that of collaborators, contains 4,200 theorems.

Peano, Giuseppe (1858-1932)
Giuseppe Peano was one of the pioneers in mathematical logic and axiomatization of mathematics. He also had many important discoveries in the field of analysis and was one of the leading authorities on auxiliary languages. Giuseppe Peano was born to a poor farming family in Spinetta, Italy, on August 27, 1858. Being born in such a poor village, he and his brother were forced to walk to the neighboring town of Cueno to attend school. However, this handicap did not stop him from excelling in his studies and he was sent to Turin with his uncle to finish his primary schooling. In 1876, he enrolled at the University of Turin to study engineering but later decided on mathematics. The university would be his home for the rest of his life. After graduating, he became a University Assistant in 1880, professor at the Royal Military Academy in 1886, extraordinary professor in 1890 and ordinary professor in 1895. In 1887, he was married but had no children. For the first part of his life, mathematics dominated Peano's life. During this period, almost all of his mathematical discoveries were made. He proved that
