Book Review George Gheverghese Joseph, The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics 2nd. ed. London: Penguin Books, 2000. To order this book from Amazon.com, click here Reviewed by Abdul Karim Bangura In her article, " Good-Bye Pythagoras? " (in The Chronicle of Higher Education , October 6, 2000, pp.16-17), Elizabeth Greene cites the following cases of academic institutions where ethnomathematics has been thoroughly embraced:
  • Ron Eglash employs African fractals in computer-graphics simulations courses at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
  • Arthur B. Powell works out river-crossing problems based on different cultures in an algebra course at the Newark campus of Rutgers University.
  • Jim Berta teaches about the Cartesian coordinate system using a cultural analogy of street mapping in towns settled by Mormons at Utah State University.
Greene adds that, in college classes in algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics, and the history of mathematics, among other subjects, and in degree programs for future elementary- and secondary-school teachers, professors are using ethnomathematics to define a new method of teaching mathematics.

68. History Of George R. & Mary (Mason) Peacock
The peacock IOWA PIONEERS HOMEPAGE begins with george and Mary. george and Mary were from England. They had a son named James who was born in Yorkshire
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/1755/Historyo.html
Some time in April 1857, mother Mary (Mason) Peacock died and was buried at the Rockdale Methodist Church Cemetery. It was after this time that George Sr. moved to unsettled territory up in Allamakee County, IA in Paint Creek Township, near Rossville and Waterville, IA. He operated a sawmill at Waterville and raised cattle on his property. He was apparently into land speculation at the time and bought and sold properties to arriving immigrants. His youngest sons Thomas (Tim) and George Jr. worked at the sawmill for him. In the summer of 1861, George Sr. died, but we do not know for certain where he is buried. (SEE NOTE 2 For Speculation on George's Probable Burial Site).
Allamakee County IAGenWeb Index In the spring of 1862 with the Civil War cranking up, Thomas and George Jr. enlisted into the US Army at the Hotel in Waterville. They mustered into the US 16th Regulars (Infantry) forming up at McGregor, IA . Ruth, her husband Jonathan and children were living at the homestead. James and his family apparently stayed in the Dubuque area to run a business. George Jr. got some type of camp sickness, and was discharged from the Army in July 1862. Edmund decided to join the 27th Iowa Infantry, and turned over his executorship of his father's probate to a local lawyer. George Jr. re-enlisted in the 9th Iowa Calvary.

By the war's end, Tim had marched along with General Sherman to Atlanta, GA , and then musters out at "Lookout Mountain" Chattanooga, TN at wars end. Edmund's unit fought around Mississippi and Louisiana area. George Jr. unit was located in somewhere in Arkansas. All three brothers were eventually honorably discharged around 1865-66. Up until this time the Allamakee Co. seat was at Lansing, IA and this is where they all seem to have end up.

In the sixties the “cranky buzzard” made his way from Michigan to Vietnam, where as an Army medic he fought to stitch together, wound by wound, some semblance of sanity. After the war Peacock haunted the home front for a while, found himself utterly incompatible, and exiled himself to the wilderness. Finding it less wild than he remembered, he set out to make it more so. With brother-in-arms Edward Abbey, Peacock giddily pioneered the practice of “monkey wrenching,” sabotaging wilderness-eating endeavors like logging and land development. The Monkey Wrench Gang would become a kind of comic bible for immoderate environmentalists. It would also make Peacock (reimagined as George Hayduke, “night-time trouble-maker, barroom brawler, free-time lover”) a folk hero.

For the first time since the 1980s, there is an opportunity to purchase a remarkable set of views of early Sydney. In 1843, artist George Edwards Peacock (1806-1890) was commissioned by the owner of ‘Craigend’, a mansion in Darlinghurst, to paint six views of, and from, the house. Colonel Rogers bought ‘Craigend’ from Sir Thomas Mitchell and was one George Peacock’s first patrons.
Peacock had a fascinating past. In 1836 he was sentenced to death for forging power of attorney on shares valued at nearly 8,000 pounds, belonging to his brother. However, the death sentence was commuted to transportation for life. He arrived at Sydney in 1837. Trained as a solicitor, and so a ‘special’ or educated prisoner, he was given clerical duties. His wife and son joined him in Port Macquarie.

Shortly after, his wife left for Sydney and Peacock petitioned authorities to transfer him to the meteorological station at South Head. He was conditionally pardoned in 1845 and continued to work at the station for another ten years when it appears the station was discontinued and at which point he faded from the public record.
