Wolfgang Pauli, great theoretical physicist
Pauli won the nobel prize in 1945. I met him in 1957, while he was visiting Imperial College where I was a student. He gave a mumbled lecture on group theory in particle physics. I met him again in 1958, when he was at the Varenna summer school organised by the Italian Physical Society. I have described this meeting here I met Pauli again later at the same conference. I was asked to take the notes of the lecture to be presented by Pauli. To make sure I could hear and see well, I resolved to get there early, so that I could claim one of the front seats. I was distressed to find that Pauli was already there, and had written out his lecture in tiny writing on two small blackboards on easels. On the left was a proof of the PCT theorem, and on the right was a proof of the spin-statistics theorem. I copied it down as fast as I could, but could only get down half of the left-hand board when it was time for the lecture. Pauli waved his pointer at the board, saying, we start with this, do this, get this, and so prove the theorem. He then turned to the right-hand board, and soon we had quickly proved the spin-statistics theorem. He then looked at the time, and said, oh, there seemed to be fifty minutes left, so he would take the opportunity to talk about new work that might be of more interest (than these old results). I had not yet finished the first board, but he rubbed out an oval clearing in the middle of the PCT theorem, and gave us a lecture on his new ideas about the group

David Peat This essay was originally published in Psychological Perspectives: A Semi-Annual Journal of Jungian Thought, Spring-Summer 1988 A few years ago while I was researching material for a book, Synchronicity: The Bridge between Matter and Mind, I had occasion to write to a well-known physicist and student of the great Wolfgang Pauli. "Synchronicity," came his reply, "is something which physicists do not know about, nor would they wish to." His implication was clear: synchronicity smelled of pseudo science and loose thinking, so why on earth would anyone choose to get mixed up with ideas like that? Scientists have not always exhibited such a hostile attitude toward Jung's notion of an acausal connecting principle. Jung himself, in a letter to Einstein's biographer Carl Seelig, related how he was introduced to the great physicist by one of Einstein's assistants, Ludwig Hopf. Einstein and Bleuler dined at Jung's house on a number of occasions, and the conversation turned to the physicist's early attempts at formulating the special theory of relativity. It was during these meetings that Jung first began to think about relativity of time and its psychic connections. It was only later, while reading Jung's

Pauli centenary
Wolfgang Pauli: never to be excluded This year marks the 100th anniversary of Wolfgang Pauli, who was born in Vienna on 25 April 1900 and died in Z¼rich on 15 December 1958. Maurice Jacob describes several events that have been arranged to mark the Pauli centenary.
Pauli and mother
Wolfgang Pauli - long the "conscience of physics" - was professor at ETH-Z¼rich for 30 years, from 1928 to 1958, except during the Second World War, when he was at Princeton at the Institute for Advanced Study. To honour his centenary, the ETH Library organized a special exhibition, which was first presented at ETH Z¼rich in April and May.
The exhibition, which beautifully illustrates Pauli's life, has now moved to CERN where it is on display in the Main Building from 17 August until 26 September. A ceremony in the Council Chamber on Monday 11 September at 4.30 p.m. will include short presentations from Maurice Jacob (chairman of the Pauli Committee), Konrad Osterwalder (Rektor of the ETH Z¼rich), Luciano Maiani (director-general of CERN) and Charles Enz (University of Geneva) on Pauli's life and legacy.
It is natural that CERN honours in this way one of the greatest physicists of the past century. Pauli acted as custodian of intellectual integrity while the field underwent tremendous development. He discovered the Exclusion Principle, which he formulated in 1924 and for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1945. He predicted the existence of the neutrino in 1930. However, he first became known through the publication of his famous 1921 review on relativity, when he was a student of Arnold Sommerfeld's. Many physicists, including Einstein, much admired this article, later reprinted as a book.
