and
Luce Hebert In researching my great great grandfather, I came across Etienne Pascal PEPIN and thought I had found my man, but after more research, I discovered he is my great great grandfather's first cousin. Etienne-Pascal's dad is Louis Pepin; Louis is the son of Etienne PEPIN and wife Jeanne MACLURE Louis PEPIN's first wife was Marie-Catherine Germain. They married on 22 Oct 1792, in Yamaska county, Québec. Louis's second wife was Agathe ROCHE dit LaLancette, daughter of Jacques Rauques and Agathe Giguere. They married 25 Oct 1802, in Yamaska county. What is uncertain, at this point, is if the following 8 children are all Louis and Agathe's, or if some are Catherine's and some are Agathe's. Children of
Louis and Catherine and/or Agathe There were 8 of them:
  • Etienne-Pascal, born/baptised 31 March 1804 Jean-Jacques, born/baptised March 1806 Basile, born/baptised 7 March 1807 Julie, born/baptised 23 February 1808 Joseph, born/baptised 31 March 1809 Simon, born/baptised 28 April 1810 Benoni, born/baptised 31 August 1811

Pascal, Blaise (1623 ñ 1662) By Eddie Yuen Blaise Pascal was born in Clermont The young Pascal began to participate with his father in Mersenneís Circle, a weekly discussion group of scientists and mathematicians. In this plantation of intellects, he learned from Girard Desargues, who had just published a projective geometry book but was not well received because of the difficult vocabulary and style. Pascal was one of the few to appreciate his work. When he was 16, he presented a projective geometry paper at the meeting about what is now called the "mystic hexagon" which impressed everyone. One of his sisters wrote an account of her brotherís life saying that the paper was so well received that young Pascal was considered to be the best mathematican since the time of Archimedes. In the next year, Blaise had to suspend his association with the geometrians in the Mersenneís Circle because he and his sisters had to move to Rouen where his father was appointed as a royal tax official in Upper Normandy. Blaise Pascal was a genius with many talents. He was known in his day and ours as a mathematician and physicist, was also a spiritual writer. In this paper, we will focus on his mathematics accomplishments:

Malcolm Muggeridge Excerpted from A Third Testament , available FREE in e-book format.
Some ten centuries after Augustine was called on to salvage the Christian Church from the ruins of the Roman Empire, Blaise Pascal, in the France of the Bourbon kings, took upon himself the task of defending the Christian faith against the arrogance and pride of those who believed they could live without God or mold His purposes to their own. Man is only a reed, the feeblest thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed. It is not necessary for the entire universe to take up arms in order to crush him. A vapor, a drop of water, is sufficient to kill him. But if the universe crushes him, man would still be nobler than the thing which destroys him, because he knows that he is dying, and the universe which has him at its mercy is unaware of it. Pensées machine arithmetique This cul-de-sac of science has only become the more evident during the twentieth century, in which science has advanced further towards exploring and explaining the nature and mechanisms of matter than in all the rest of recorded time. Know then, proud man, what a paradox you are to yourself. Humble yourself, impotent reason. Be silent, dull-witted nature, and learn from your Master your true condition, which you do not understand. Listen to God! See the Earth as a point compared with the vast circles it describes. Stand amazed that this circle itself is only a tiny point in relation to the course traced by the stars revolving in the firmament; that the whole visible world is no more than an imperceptible speck in the ample bosom of nature.

Blaise Pascal was born in Clermont, now called Clermont-Ferrand, in Auvergne, in 1623. His mother died when he was only three years old. A few years later the family moved to Paris, where Blaise Pascal's father, Etienne, decided that his son should be home-schooled. No mathematics texts were allowed in the house: this prohibition arousing the young Pascal's curiosity, he began working on geometry himself at the age of twelve. His father gave in, and allowed the boy to accompany him to meetings of mathematicians. The family moved to Rouen when Pascal's father was named tax collector for the region. From 1642 to 1645, Pascal worked on a calculator to help his father in his work. The device, which came to be known as the "pascaline," is considered to be among the first mechanical calculators ever invented. With the illness of his father and a life-threatening accident he endured himself, Pascal became increasingly religious. By the end of his life, in 1662, he was as well known for his religious publications as for his mathematical papers. In A Short Account of the History of Mathematics (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball, excerpted at http://www.maths.tcd.ie, there is an interesting account of the connection between Pascal's mathematical workparticularly his correspondence with Fermat on the theory of probabilityand his religious work:

Pascal's ancestors were rich merchants that reached the highest ranks of the burgess class. His father, Martin Pascal was the receiver general of taxes at Clermont. He became secretary to the Queen. In 1586, Martin was granted the post of conseiller to the King, Treasurer of France, and General of the King's Finances in the Generality of Riom. He married Marguerite Pascal de Mons forming an alliance with another family of Pascal (of noble standing) and ensuring his children hereditary nobility.

BLAISE PASCAL (1623-1662)
BIOGRAPHY
At Rouen Blaise Pascal began to concentrate on mathematics. While still a teenager, he wrote his first book (on conic sections in geometry) and developed a plan for a calculating machine to help his father's tax work. In 1644, he built the first of the machine's several working models- no small feat given the state of metalworking at the time. Pascal's contributions to mathematics and computing machines were so important that a major contemporary programming language is named in his honor. Pascal also experimented on the nature of a vacuum showing that, contrary to Aristotle's belief, "Nature has no abhorrence of a vacuum." In 1647 Pascal became seriously ill and returned to Paris with his younger sister to recover. Following his father's death in 1651, his sister entered a convent, leaving Pascal alone. Over the next several years Pascal seemed to drift: he outwardly enjoyed the social life of Paris as a successful mathematician and eligible bachelor, but he was inwardly dissatisfied. Although he had undergone a conversion in 1646 under the influence of the Jansenists, a group of devout Catholics, Pascal still felt without direction. On the night of November 23, 1654, Pascal had a remarkable second conversion experience, the description of which he sewed inside his coat:

Description
Limacon of Pascal describe a family of curves. It is a special case of epitrochoid . (see Curve Family Index ) It can also be defined as a conchoid of a circle. Cardioid and trisectrix are special cases of Limacon of Pascal. Limacon of Pascal as a conchoid
  • Let there be a fixed point O on a circle.
  • Draw a line passing O and P, where P is any point on the circle.
  • On this line, mark points Q1 and Q2 such that distance[P,Q1] == distance[P,Q2] == k, where k is a constant.
  • Repeat step 2, 3 for different choice of P. The locus of Q is the Limacon of Pascal.

    BLAISE PASCAL
PASCAL, BLAISE Excluding here his scientific attainments (see below), Pascal presents himself for comment in two different lights, the second of which is, if the expression be permitted, a composite one. The first exhibits him as a man of letters, the second as a philosopher, a theologian, and simply a man, for in no one is the color of the theology and the philosophy more distinctly personal. Yet his character as a man is not very distinct. The accounts of his sister and niece have the defect of all hagiology; they are obviously written rather with a view to the ideas and the wishes of the writers than with a view to the actual and absolute personality of the subject. Except from these interesting but somewhat tainted sources, we know little or nothing about him. Hence conjecture, or at least inference, must always enter largely into any estimate of Pascal, except a purely literary one. To sum up, the Pennies are excursions into the great unknown made with a full acknowledgment of the greatness of that unknown. From the point of view that belief and knowledge, based on experience or reasoning, are separate domains with an unexplored sea between and round them, Pascal is perfectly PASARGADAE JACQUELINE PASCAL To properly cite this BLAISE PASCAL article in your work, copy the complete reference below:

In 1631 he went to Paris so that his son could have the best education and he devoted himself the Blaise's education there. In 1634 he was appointed to a committee set up by Cardinal Richelieu to judge whether Morin 's scheme for determining longitude from the Moon's motion was practical. From about this time he became involved with Mersenne 's meetings. Through these he collaborated with Roberval , Desargues and Mydorge Etienne also held a number of government appointments and a court official.
