102. BLAISE PASCAL - LoveToKnow Article On BLAISE PASCAL
pascal, blaise (16231662), French religious philosopher and mathematician, wasborn at Clermont Ferrand on the I9tIi of June 1623.
http://45.1911encyclopedia.org/P/PA/PASCAL_BLAISE.htm
BLAISE PASCAL
PASCAL, BLAISE Excluding here his scientific attainments (see below), Pascal presents himself for comment in two different lights, the second of which is, if the expression be permitted, a composite one. The first exhibits him as a man of letters, the second as a philosopher, a theologian, and simply a man, for in no one is the color of the theology and the philosophy more distinctly personal. Yet his character as a man is not very distinct. The accounts of his sister and niece have the defect of all hagiology; they are obviously written rather with a view to the ideas and the wishes of the writers than with a view to the actual and absolute personality of the subject. Except from these interesting but somewhat tainted sources, we know little or nothing about him. Hence conjecture, or at least inference, must always enter largely into any estimate of Pascal, except a purely literary one. To sum up, the Pennies are excursions into the great unknown made with a full acknowledgment of the greatness of that unknown. From the point of view that belief and knowledge, based on experience or reasoning, are separate domains with an unexplored sea between and round them, Pascal is perfectly PASARGADAE JACQUELINE PASCAL To properly cite this BLAISE PASCAL article in your work, copy the complete reference below:

Biography Among the contemporaries of Descartes none displayed greater natural genius than Pascal, but his mathematical reputation rests more on what he might have done than on what he actually effected, as during a considerable part of his life he deemed it his duty to devote his whole time to religious exercises.
At the age of fourteen he was admitted to the weekly meetings of Roberval, Mersenne, Mydorge, and other French geometricians; from which, ultimately, the French Academy sprung. At sixteen Pascal wrote an essay on conic sections; and in 1641, at the age of eighteen, he constructed the first arithmetical machine, an instrument which, eight years later, he further improved. His correspondence with Fermat about this time shews that he was then turning his attention to analytical geometry and physics. He repeated Torricelli's experiments, by which the pressure of the atmosphere could be estimated as a weight, and he confirmed his theory of the cause of barometrical variations by obtaining at the same instant readings at different altitudes on the hill of Puy-de-D´me.
In 1650, when in the midst of these researches, Pascal suddenly abandoned his favourite pursuits to study religion, or, as he says in his Pens©es, ``contemplate the greatness and the misery of man''; and about the same time he persuaded the younger of his two sisters to enter the Port Royal society.

Pascal, Blaise
A francia matematikus, fizikus, filozófus. A számítástechnika történelmébe is beírta a nevét. 19 éves korában alkotta meg a számológépét édesapja munkájának megkönnyítésére. Egy programozási nyelv õrzi nevét. A matematika mellett egyéb tudományágak (aero és hidrosztatika) iránt is érdeklõdött. 1647-ben felfedezte a közlekedõedények sajátosságait.
Foglalkozott a folyadékok nyomásviszonyaival, és felismerte a lehetõségét annak, hogy a barométert a magasságmérés szolgálatába állítsák. 25 éves korában egy egyházi mozgalom (a janzenista rend) tagja lett. Vitái voltak a jezsuitákkal.
Ezzel a projektív geometria történetébe írta be a nevét. Késõbb érdeklõdése a kombinatorika és a valószínûségszámítás felé fordult.
