After a busy day on the streets showing of his 'digester' on a promotional sales tour Denis Papin welcomed the opportunity to take a break and have a natter over a few beers in a local public house just around the corner which I knew pulled a decent pint. I'd moved here from France because being Protestant life was not so pleasant back home and started working with Boyle and his air pumps. My previous work with Huygens in the Academie Royale des Sciences in Paris on the evacuating of a cylinder by gunpowder charge than the more usual but slower method of pump stood me in good stead.

No. 1281:
A WINDOW ON THE HUGUENOTS
by John H.Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1281. Today, an old book and a new look at creativity and dissent. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. T he eaves of the Louvre in Paris are lined with statues of famous French artists and intellectuals. One is Denis Papin. Papin invented a steam engine at least two decades before the English did and seventy years before Watt brought steam power to maturity. But Papin was a French Protestant a Huguenot. The Huguenots had coexisted with French Catholics for a century. Then, after a rapid buildup of anti-Protestant sentiment in the 1680s, Louis XIV expelled the Huguenots. He drove Papin and 400,000 others off into Germany, England, Canada. Huguenots found their way to Massachusetts, England, Canada ... Their progeny included revolutionaries like Alexander Hamilton and Paul Revere. Christian Huygens, another early experimenter with steam, was also among the intellectuals forced out of France. During his peripatetic life, Papin never did bring the steam engine to fruition. Practical power-producing engines had to wait another 20 years for a Devonshire blacksmith named Thomas Newcomen.

Born: near Blois, Aug 1647 He was christened on 22 August.
Died: probably in England, c. 1712 The last evidence of Papin was a letter to Sloane dated 23 Jan. 1712. He was destitute. Some early accounts suggest that he returned to Germany and died there about 1715-16, but it is extremely difficult to believe that he could have found the resources to make the trip.

From a Huguenot family; Papin's life was greatly influenced by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which kept him in exile, though he had already left France, possibly because of the increasing restrictions that were the prelude to the revocation.

Denis Papin - 1647 - 1712 ?

Sylvie Testud: Christine Papin Julie-Marie Parmentier: Lea Papin Director : Jean-Pierre Denis
The real-life 1933 murder case of sisters Christine and Lea Papin who brutally murdered their employer and her daughter in Le Mans, France is observed with a keen psychological eye by writer/director Jean-Pierre Denis. This fascinating exploration of a soul reaching the breaking point is chillingly insightful.
Speculating on the interior reality of Christine Papin, Denis unveils a childhood marked by disdain from her mother and abandonment and possible sexual abuse by her father. Through adolescence and into hard adulthood her isolation and disconnect from nurturing relationships mounts. At age 11 Christine is taken by her mother to a convent school, along with her sister Emilia. When Emilia chooses a convent vocation, Christine too prefers to stay but her mother refuses permission saying, "You will slave for others like I had to."
The sisters are cemented together by their mutual need for affection and their background that has shut out all others. Quite a few years older than Lea, Christine's affection is brimming with sexual longing that she keeps in check, for a while. She has promised to protect her sweet, simple sister Lea. Testud's Christine is a taut, frayed rope strained to the breaking point, in tense control until she loses it all, like a burst dam. The sisters' devotion turns explicitly sexual, but somehow joyless for the always-troubled Christine. Anxiety and fear turn into frenzied madness when the sisters are unexpectedly interrupted, by their employer Madame Lincelan and her daughter.
