Denis Papin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Denis Papin August 22 - c. ), was a French physicist mathematician , and inventor was born in Blois, Loir-et-Cher France . A brilliant student of the University at Angers , he became a mathematician and physicist, best known for his pioneering work with steam power. Denis Papin In , Papin invented the "steam digester", a type of pressure cooker . Observing the mechanical power of compressed steam , he went on to build a model of a piston steam engine . His ideas were later developed into a practical engine by Thomas Savery and his successors. A Huguenot , Papin's life was greatly affected by the increasing restrictions placed on Protestants by Louis XIV of France and the King's ultimate revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Denis Papin fled to London where the last evidence of his whereabouts was a letter he wrote dated January 23, 1712. At the time he was destitute and it is believed he died that year and was buried in an unmarked pauper's pit. Retrieved from " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Papin

The "digester" or "pressure-cooker".
After have helped Christian Huygens to build an engine based on the gun powder (the explosion could have created a vacuum under a piston and pressure from the outside air could force the piston down), Denis Papin had the bright idea to make the same thing with the water steam.
The Papin engine was a metal tube (closed at one end) with a piston inside.
Under the piston there was a small quantity of water which, warmed up and transformed in steam, raised the piston who reached the edge of the cylinder where was stopped by a click.
A stream of cold water was sprayed onto the cylinder.
The steam inside condensed.
This produced a partial vacuum and the outside air pressure forced the piston down (active stroke).
The tube had three roles: boiler, cylinder and steam condenser.
The steam engine will built step by step, separating those three roles.

Executive summary: Steam engine innovator Denis Papin, one of the inventors of the steam-engine, was a native of Blois, where he was born on the 22nd of August 1647. In 1661 or 1662 he entered upon the study of medicine at the University of Angers, where he graduated in 1669. Some time prior to 1674 he removed to Paris and assisted Christiaan Huygens in his experiments with the air-pump, the results of which, , were published at Paris in that year, and also in the form of five papers by Huygens and Papin jointly, in the Philosophical Transactions for 1675. Shortly after the publication of the , Papin, who had crossed to London, was hospitably received by Robert Boyle , whom he assisted in his laboratory and with his writings. About this time also he introduced into the air-pump the improvement of making it with double barrels, and replacing by the two valves the turncock hitherto used; he is said, moreover, to have been the first to use the plate and receiver. Subsequently he invented the condensing-pump, and in 1680 he was admitted, on Boyle's nomination, to the Royal Society. In the previous year he had exhibited to the society his famous "steam digester, or engine for softening bones", afterwards described in a tract published at Paris and entitled

Errungenschaften der Naturwissenschaft und Medizin Denis PAPIN French physicist (1647-1712) He was born at Blois on August 22nd 1647 . In 1679, he invented his " steam digester ", a closed vessel with a tightly lid in which water was heated. Because the steam was prevented from escaping, a high pressure was generated, causing the boiling point of the water to rise considerably. A safety valve guarded against excessive rise of pressure . In 1707, he published a book, the Ars nova ad aquam ignis adminicules efficacissime elevandam Papin went back to London, the same year, where he died in obscurity in about 1712 . I have chosen Denis Papin because I remembered him when we started the project as I knew his work by watching a Disney's cartoon and as I grew I always wanted to know his story further.
