    Mary Shelley's The Last Man : Apocalypse Without Millennium
    by Morton D. Paley
    reprinted from the Keats-Shelley Review
    Early in 1826 appeared a book advertised as a "new Romance, or, rather Prophetic Tale" Mary Shelley's novel The Last Man . It was published at just the wrong time. Since 1823 the literary world had been preoccupied with a controversy about just who had invented the Last Man, beginning with the publication of Thomas Campbell's poem "The Last Man" and Francis Jeffrey's suggestion in the Edinburgh Review that Campbell was indebted to Byron's "Darkness" for the idea. Campbell was moved to print an open letter to Jeffrey asserting his own priority and claiming that it was he who at least fifteen years before had suggested to Byron the subject of "a being witnessing the extinction of his species and of the creation, and of his looking, under the fading eye of nature, at desolate cities, ships floating with the dead . . . ." According to Campbell, the publication of "Darkness" had discouraged him from pursuing the theme, but "I was provoked to change my mind, when my friend Barry Cornwall informed me that an acquaintance of his intended to write a long poem entitled the Last man." Barry Cornwall's acquaintance was Thomas Lovell Beddoes, who had been projecting

    Executive summary: Moral and Political Philosophy English divine and philosopher, born at Peterborough. He was educated at Giggleswick school, of which his father was headmaster, and at Christ's College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1763 as senior wrangler, became fellow in 1766, and in 1768 tutor of his college. He lectured on Samuel Clarke, Joseph Butler and John Locke , and also delivered a systematic course on moral philosophy, which subsequently formed the basis of his well-known treatise. The subscription controversy was then agitating the university, and Paley published an anonymous Defence of a pamphlet in which Bishop Law had advocated the retrenchment and simplification of the Thirty-nine Articles; he did not, however, sign the petition called the "Feathers" petition from being drawn up at a meeting at the Feathers tavern) for a relaxation of the terms of subscription. In 1776 Paley was presented to the rectory of Musgrave in Westmorland, supplemented at the end of the year by the vicarage of Dalston, and presently exchanged for that of Appleby. In 1782 he became archdeacon of Carlisle. At the suggestion of his friend John Law (son of Edward Law, Bishop of Carlisle and formerly his colleague at Cambridge), Paley published (1785) his lectures, revised and enlarged, under the title of

And what could I say? They were wonderful." From the very beginning of Sergio Troncoso's celebrated story "Angie Luna," we know we are in the hands of a gifted storyteller. Born of Mexican immigrants, raised in El Paso, and now living in New York City, Troncoso has a rare knack for celebrating life. Writing in a straightforward, light-handed style reminiscent of Grace Paley and Raymond Carver, he spins charming tales that reflect his experiences in two worlds. Troncoso's El Paso is a normal town where common people who happen to be Mexican eat, sleep, fall in love, and undergo epiphanies just like everyone else. His tales are coming-of-age stories from the Mexican-American border, stories of the working class, stories of those coping with the trials of growing old in a rapidly changing society. He also explores New York with vignettes of life in the big city, capturing its loneliness and danger. Beginning with Troncoso's widely acclaimed story "Angie Luna," the tale of a feverish love affair in which a young man rediscovers his Mexican heritage and learns how much love can hurt, these stories delve into the many dimensions of the human condition. We watch boys playing a game that begins innocently but takes a dangerous turn. We see an old Anglo woman befriending her Mexican gardener because both are lonely. We witness a man terrorized in his New York apartment, taking solace in memories of lost love.

    To celebrate our distinguished alumnus, the Tufts University Mathematics Department has instituted the Norbert Wiener Lectures , funded by an anonymous gift to the University. Norbert Wiener may be the Tufts alumnus of most enduring fame. He was a world renowned mathematician and founder of the science of cybernetics and made some of the most important contributions to mathematics in the 20th century. Norbert Wiener was born in Columbia, Missouri, November 26, 1894. His father, Leo Wiener, was a Russian who became a self taught philologist of importance, aquiring a chair in Slavic languages at Harvard soon after Norbert's birth. Wiener's mother Bertha was born in Missouri. His brilliant, absentminded and hot-tempered father personally took charge of his son's education, and Wiener did not go to school until attending the high school in Ayer, Massachusetts, near his family's home in the rural town of Harvard, Massachusetts. Tufts When he was 11 the family moved to Medford Hillside, so he could enter Tufts. He enrolled at Tufts in 1906 and graduated in 1909. His major was mathematics, and he had a strong interest in physics and chemistry, and finally biology. At 15 he entered the graduate program in zoology at Harvard. His eyesight and coordination made him a failure at laboratory work. After changing to philosophy he moved closer to mathematics with a doctoral thesis (at Harvard) on mathematical logic, obtained while working with Professor Karl Schmidt at Tufts.

    Bogus Cha-Ka Comes Clean
    by Joal Ryan

    Sep 8, 1999, 4:15 PM PT
    Call it justice for Cha-Ka. Prodded by attorneys for a former child star of the 1970s Saturday morning kids' show Land of the Lost , a member of the chart-topping rock band Sugar Ray ("Every Morning") today admitted that, no, he wasn't Cha-Ka the caveboy. "For the record, I never played Cha-Ka, and I apologize to both Phil Paley, who did, and to the fans of Land of the Lost for not correcting this information sooner," Sugar Ray guitarist Rodney Sheppard said in a statement. a d v e r t i s e m e n t document.write('');
    Meanwhile, the real Cha-Ka, aka the aforementioned Phil Paley, expressed reliefand vindication. "It's nice to clear up the situation finally," Paley tells E! Online. "It was kind of upsetting." For those who napped through 1970s, Land of the Lost was a live-action, Sid and Marty Krofft-produced series about a family trapped in a prehistoric, dinosaur-terrorized world and the lovable, if monosyllabic, caveboy (Cha-Ka) they befriended. As any visitor to a TV reference book knows, the part of Cha-Ka in the original series (a redo followed in 1991) was played by Paleynot Sheppard.

    The Old-Time Herald Volume 6, Number 7 Features Park Slope Old-Time / Bluegrass Jamboree By Tina Aridas Brooklyn, New York, might seem an unlikely place for an old-time music festival. But it was like a homecoming party at the First Annual Park Slope Old-Time/Bluegrass Jamboree, held last September on the grounds of the Ethical Culture Meeting House, a turn-of-the-century building located across from Prospect Park in Park Slope, a neighborhood that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. James Reams, the person who conceived of the Jamboree and one of those on the planning committee (and an old-time and bluegrass musician himself), said, "We plan to keep things on a small scale. We want people to feel at home and have a good time. The only thing big is the big time we hope everyone has! That's why the Jamboree's motto is, 'Just a big old-time.'" Despite plans to keep it small, the Jamboree attracted more than 230 musicians and fans of old-time music over the two days. It was held both indoors in the rooms of the 100-year-old Meeting House, and outdoors on the mansion's park-like grounds, so passers-by, attracted by the music, came in, kids and all, and wound up staying through the evening hoedown and concerts. Old-time music is no stranger to New York City. The availability of early recording techniques brought many southern old-time musicians to the city in the 1930s to record. Thirty years later, the folk revival of the 1960s was headquartered in New York City's Washington Square. Now, 30 years after that, the Jamboree planners hope to add a chapter to the saga of old-time music in the city. That dream may become a reality, as the Second Annual Park Slope Old-Time/Bluegrass Jamboree is already set for September 24 and 25, 1999. The format will be close to that of the first Jamboree: a kickoff concert and reception on Friday evening, followed by a full Saturday of workshops, jamming, song-swaps, a hoedown, presentation of the "Brown Jug Award" to a person who has made a significant contribution to old-time and/or bluegrass music in the Northeast (this year it was awarded to Ray Alden), a barbecue dinner, and an evening of concerts by six bands.

    TIME TO QUIT
    By Allen Ginsberg Amos Vogel David Dellinger David Kirk ... Tom Cornell
    To the Editors: For sixty-four years the League for Industrial Democracy has been a moderate but respected part of the American Left. It has also traditionally had a close association with the Socialist Party, an association which continues today since both Michael Harrington, its chairman, and Tom Kahn, its Executive Secretary, are members of the Socialist Party. This year, to the general dismay of the democratic Left, the L.I.D. has chosen to present its annual award to Hubert Horatio Humphrey. Humphrey defended Boss Daley and the police riot in Chicago: once publicly gloated that the number of NLF troops killed in battle was so much greater than ours because the NLF forces couldn't get proper medical attention for their wounded; edged very close to calling the late Robert Kennedy a traitor for suggesting the NLF must be part of any negotiations to end the Vietnam war; linked arms with Lester Maddox; and to this very day has expressed no regret for his consistent defense of the war in Vietnam and the active part he played in conducting that war as Lyndon Johnson's Vice President. This is not an easy letter for any of us to sign because we have warm personal regards for some of those leading the L.I.D. and because the Left already suffers from too much internecine conflict. But we have no choice but to protest this award, since the award reflects not only on the L.I.D., but on all those who consider themselves a part of the democratic Left.

    William C. ('Daddy') Paley
    American cameraman and showman Born in Lincolnshire, England, Paley emigrated to the United States where he became an X-Ray ( Röntgen Georges ). The following year the company moved to California, and it is likely that Paley spent much of the rest of his life in the West. In March 1912, employed by the Nestor Company to film the California mountains he suffered a fall, and one leg had to be amputated. Ageing and almost destitute, his colleagues started a fund to help him, and though only a few hundred dollars was raised this must have made life a little easier during his final years which were spent at Forest Lawn, Hollywood.
