A highlight of the Festival is "DREAMER", by Raymond E. Spiess Jr., winner of the Sundance 2000 Festival for short feature, and nominee of the 2000 Academy Awards. Anne Makepeaces’ Sundance entry,"COMING TO LIGHT: Edward S. Curtis and the American Indians", is a masterful view of the photographic legacy of Curtis and an outstanding ethnographic document of the North American Indian. The diversity in this years' documentaries range from the fringes of the acceptable as witnessed by Cass Paley’s insightful profile of the late adult cinema star, John C. Holmes, “WADD, The Life & Times of John C. Holmes,” to “BORN IN THE USA," an insiders view of the role childbirth plays in our lives, to the death defying action packed documentary, “A KAYAK ADVENTURE IN BORNEO,” by Joseph P.Yaggi. Complimenting the traditional approaches to videomaking and filmaking is the wacky and whimsical "Best of Festival" animation award winner, Nancye Ferguson, Mark Mothersbaugh and Arlene Klasky’s “WHATS IN HEIDI’S HEAD,” a multi-dimensional computer-and-live-action short that transcends the preconceptions of this genre.  Screening this weekend will be 35 Documentaries, Features, Short Features, Animation, Comedy, Commercials, Educational and Art video and film works. Ticket prices each day are $8.00. Screenings start at 2 p.m. each day.

Fear of Flight
Rewriting Short Fiction as a Novel
By Ginger Strand
In April 2003, an agent sat down with me, pointed to my manuscript, and said the words I had been dreading: I think this should be a novel. I shuddered. I was no novelist. I was a minimalist, a votress of the goddess of gesture, a worshipper at the altar of the succinct. I was a short story writer. linked short story collection, with shared characters, themes, and issues. Linked story collections, as we know, are all the rage. I ignored the advice and sent my manuscript to an agent recommended by one of my short story editors. Thus it was that I ended up in a Japanese restaurant, hearing the raw truth over (appropriately) sashimi. The agent in question, Nat Sobel, is nothing if not gracious. He ordered a bottle of sake and filled my glass several times before delivering the news: My linked collection of stories was trans-genred. It had a novel inside, a novel just longing to get out. I stared glumly into my hijiki Flight , will be in bookstores.

Alex Raymond
Illustrator Alex Raymond is best known for his comics illustration during the golden age of comics (1930s and 1940s). He began as an illustrator in the “bullpen” at King Features Syndicate until he broke out his Secret Agent X-9 comic strip in 1934 and emerged as a talent in his own right.
Raymond also provided artwork for the popular Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim comic strips in the 1930s, and upon returning from service in World War II, began illustrating Rip Kirby comics, one of his best known series.

    72. Brokenness: On Form And The Short Story
Think about the work of Grace paley or raymond Carver or Alice Munro. None ofthese writers has ever produced a novel and their contributions to literature
    http://www.blithe.com/bhq2.2/brokenness.html
some remarks delivered at the OutWrite Conference, February 1998) In my reading about short story writer John Cheever last week, I came across a couple of quotes which speak to our subject this morning. The first comes from the critic, James O'Hara, and it concerns Cheever's decision, late in his career, to redirect his energies toward the novel: Inevitable as this change was, in purely artistic terms it may have been a mistake. Cheever was right in determining that novels would earn more money for himself and his family, along with greater professional recognition. Thanks in part to television and a general decline in literacy, the short story form in America had itself entered a period of decline. But a novel that became a best-seller opened a path to additional revenues, and motion picture rights were among the most lucrative of these. In fact, Hollywood producers were for a time very interested in the Wapshot novels and paid Cheever a respectable $75,000 for the rights to them. Still, one can only imagine what wonders Cheever might have been able to perform as a master of the short story, if ambition and such financial concerns had not turned his creative energies in another direction....There is ample evidence that while he was an artificial novelist, he was a natural teller of short stories (O'Hara 71). The critic Stanley Edgar Hyman furthers these thoughts, although he's far less sanguine about the matter:

The P.I. Poll Murder on the Airwaves
    Radio EyesThen and Now

It's strange, in a way, that, except for a small, but fervent cult out there, radio drama is now almost forgotten. But once upon a time the radio cracked and buzzed with dramas of all kinds, and private eyes in particular, in such profusion and variety, that, even now, I don't think anyone's come up with a definite list of radio eyes. They ranged from the darkest of dramas, to the lightest of comedies, full of treacherous dames, bubble-headed secretaries, malevolent foreigners, ruthless gangsters, treacherous killers and corrupt and/or bumbling police officers. And, of course, the private eyes themselves. Tall, short, fat, thin, male, female, married, single, smart, dumb, passionless, wise-cracking, fighting, singing, dancing. The private eye was such a staple of radio that, when that newfangled electronic box, television, came along, many of the early shows were merely video continuations of already-established radio shows. And even now, the trade in recordings of those old radio detective shows is fervent and brisk, and scattered throughout the airwaves, even now, are brand new eyes facing brand new cases, carrying on a tradition most people aren't even aware of. Nobody's doing it anymore? Well, these guys are.

On a mild January day, William Jefferson Clinton delivered one of the shortest speeches of his career - only 14 minutes long - to celebrate his inauguration. It began with the words:
Today we celebrate the mystery of American renewal. This ceremony is held in the depth of winter. But, by the words we speak and the faces we show the world, we force the spring.

Raymond K. Price, Jr. headed the writing and research team in the Nixon White House. He worked with Mr. Nixon for two years prior to the presidency, helping plan and wage the 1968 campaign, and then served at the White House throughout the Nixon presidency. He was the president's collaborator on both inaugural addresses, and also on the speech announcing his resignation. After the White House, he wrote an interpretive retrospective on the Nixon presidency, With Nixon (The Viking Press, 1977), as well as helping President Nixon with five of his post-presidency books and traveling extensively abroad with him.

From: MONTYKINS@news.delphi.com (MONTYKINS@DELPHI.COM) I tried to post this once before, but I think it vanished mysteriously.
flurry of intense work over the last couple days. A couple warnings: 1) LIES may have too many, or too few citings. The collages sometimes
look like more than one art piece, so I credited them that way. OTOH,
since all unlabelled pieces (or pieces without signatures on them) go to
LIES, there might be too many. I particularly doubt the pictures on 174
and 175. 2) "Hal Robins" and "Dr. Howll" are different people in this list,
because I wasn't absolutely positive they're "really" the same person. 3) Ken DeVries is alphabetized under "KDV". I forget why. 4) In the whole book, only pages 121, 152, 183, and 184 have no art. 5) The pieces on 151 may be miscredited. Any suggestions, corrections, etc. would be appreciated!

The characters in Stephen King's The Dark Tower cycle are shadows etched in grayscale imprinted on ash. …a stone, a leaf, an unfound door; of a leaf, a stone, a door. And of all the forgotten faces.
Naked and alone we came into exile. In her dark womb, we did not know our mother's face; from the prison of her flesh have we come into the unspeakable and incommunicable prison of this earth.
Which of us has known his brother? Which of us has looked into his father's heart? Which of us has not remained forever prison-pent? Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone?
...O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again.
