Keeping the faith
Grace Paley was born in the Bronx of Russian-Jewish immigrants. Her first act of defiance was signing a school petition against the second world war. In the 60s and 70s there was Vietnam - she was sent to jail for civil disobedience - and feminism. And she wrote, publishing a collection of stories every decade. Now 81, she is still teaching, writing and fighting.

Paley-Wiener theorem
In mathematics the Paley-Wiener theorem relates growth properties of entire functions on C n and Fourier transformation of Schwartz distributions of compact support Generally, the Fourier transform can be defined for any tempered distribution ; moreover, any distribution of compact support v is a tempered distribution. If v is a distribution of compact support and f is an infinitely differentiable function, the expression is well defined. In the above expression the variable x in v x is a dummy variable and indicates that the distribution is to be applied with the argument function considered as a function of x It can be shown that the Fourier transform of v is a function (as opposed to a general tempered distribution) given at the value s by and that this function can be extended to values of s in the complex space C n . This extension of the Fourier transform to the complex domain is called the Fourier-Laplace transform Theorem . An entire function F on C n is the Fourier-Laplace transform of distribution v of compact support if and only if for all z C n for some constants C N B . The distribution v in fact will be supported in the closed ball of center and radius B Additional growth conditions on the entire function F impose regularity properties on the distribution v : For instance, if for

THE LITTLE DISTURBANCES OF MAN
by Grace Paley add to cart INTRODUCTION In The Little Disturbances of Man , relationships between women and men are turbulent, mysterious, and frequently surprising. Grace Paley shows us couples who divorce but remain as intimate with each other as when married. She probes the affairs younger women avidly pursue with older men. She gives us a perennial mistress who eventually marries the man she's been having a thirty-year affair with. Paley makes no judgments about her characters; she simply invites us to observe them. With wry, sly humor and keen insight into the way we really live as opposed to how we like to think we live Paley's stories provoke rarely asked, potentially inflammatory questions about relationships. Why do men and women get married and have children when the result is a crowded house, a grouchy husband, and an overworked, desperate wife? Is adultery really so bad? Why is it both commonplace and universally condemned? Is it wrong for older men to have consensual sexual relationships with willing young women? Apart from the moments when sex brings them into harmony, the men and women in Paley's stories seem to operate at cross-purposes. The women want a man who will stick around, but such a man is nearly impossible to find. The men want women to be companions as well as lovers, but they don't want wives

GC's Monday Quiz,
via David Gates' review of The Outlaw Bible for the NYTBR Who exactly qualifies as an outlaw and why? Let's try a little quiz. Without looking at the table of contents, which two made the grade? A) Bret Easton Ellis B) Norman Mailer C) Grace Paley D) Raymond Carver Time's up: B and C. Mailer qualifies because he's ''walked a tightrope over public opinion, often with a dagger in his teeth'' possibly an allusion to his stabbing his wife all those years ago? for his ''hipster manifesto 'The White Negro' '' and his ''literary sponsorship of the criminal Jack Henry Abbott'' (who's also in the anthology). Paley has published ''highly acclaimed collections of short fiction,'' but heck, so has Munro. Selling point: her antiwar, antinuke and feminist activism. So what's wrong with Ellis and Carver? If you read carefully the stuff I quoted above I can't blame you if you skimmed you'll see why they don't belong in the club of those who don't belong in the Club. Patrick Bateman in Ellis's ''American Psycho'' is far more crazed and violent than Stephen Rojack in Mailer's ''American Dream,'' but he's an I.P.O. kind of guy: out. Carver passes the trailer-park test, but his flintlike precisionism doesn't fit the lava-flow aesthetic. Outlaws are not anal.
(Gates' review, btw, is notable not only for its multiple-choice ardor, but its fearlessly facile critique of Alice Munro:

Major Figures in American Music
Major Figures in American Music is the core unit of Oral History American Music. It consists of approximately 300 interviews with composers, performers, and other significant musicians. The first subjects were those most fragile in terms of age and health, such as Eubie Blake, Nadia Boulanger, Aaron Copland, Harry Partch, Charles Seeger, Claire Reis, and Virgil Thomson. Among other senior composers interviewed during the OHAM's first decade were John Cage, Lou Harrison, Ernst Krenek, Leo Ornstein, and William Schuman. As OHAM proceeded, composers actively involved in their careers were included and have been updated periodically. To name a few: John Adams, David Del Tredici, Lukas Foss, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Ned Rorem, Billy Taylor, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Oham's program also includes oral histories with emerging young talents, with the plan to track their careers as they unfold in the future. In addition to interviews with primary subjects, the core unit includes testimonies from secondary sources about George Gershwin, Harry Lawrence Freeman, Percy Grainger, and Arnold Schoenberg.
