Although we knew this area from earlier trips, most of the sundials were new to us. Ton Bron and Dik de Groot, who organised this trip, surprised us with a 37-page well-researched booklet containing sundial descriptions and as many as 27 colour photographs. Of particular interest was Leiden 11, built in 1976 by member H. Haasnoot. It has two semi-annual half-cylindrical dial plates carrying EOT half-curves for increasing and decreasing declination, respectively. The ends of two thin rods provide the shadows. "Zenith" for Sep 1986 featured a detailed description. Note also the three motorised "sundial machines" by Ton Bron. They were described in this Bulletin earlier. Ton also owns a Bernhart dial [the model also seen in front of the Stuttgart Planetarium and in the Deutsches Museum (Munich) Sundial Garden]. Two resignations, seven new members (one of which the Assen folk museum), two changes.

[Editions of Hutton (1803) and Riddle (1854)]. A wheel has eight hollow arms terminated in bellows. On each bellows is fastened a lead weight. The air chamber in each bellows communicates through the hollow arms to the bellows directly opposite. (This is not clearly shown in the diagram.) Compressing one bellows forces air to expand the opposite bellows, and vice versa. The center of the hub is the axle of rotation.

The psychology of perpetual motion machine seekers Quite often people send me designs with the question "Why won't it work?" Some of these are people who have designed a clever puzzle to test student understanding of physics principles. They know it won't work, and they know why. They are just challenging others. Some of them really think it will work, but don't say so up front. When the error is found, the inventor may acknowledge the error and say, "I'll have to fix that." It then becomes clear to me that the inventor really thinks he was on to something, but just made a goof. These inventors haven't the slightest doubt that PMMs are possible, and nothing will change their minds, not physics, not experiment, nothing. Why? Two reasons come to mind. (1) They don't trust that the well-established physics laws are completely true. They hope there's a loophole in there somewhere that will make PMM possible. (2) They think they can stumble on a new physical phenomena not covered by existing laws. Of course reason 1 is justified, because no physics laws or theories claim to be the final perfect description of nature. And reason 2 isn't totally unreasonable, for we always expect to discover new phenomena, which may require new laws and theory.

Den salige Fredrik Ozanam (1813-1853) Minnedag: 9. september Den salige Fredrik Ozanam (1813-1853) Den salige Fredrik Ozanam (fr: Frédéric) ble født den 23. april 1813 i Milano i Lombardia i Nord-Italia. Han het egentlig Antoine-Frédéric og var sønn av Jean-Antoine-Frédéric Ozanam (1773-1837) og Marie Nantas (1781-1839), som begge opprinnelig kom fra Lyon-området i Frankrike. Fredrik var den femte av deres fjorten barn, men bare fire av barna levde opp. Jean-Antoine Ozanam hadde først vært kjøpmann i Lyon og så en tid offiser i Napoleons hær, men da han forlot hæren, slo han seg ned i Milano, hvor han utdannet seg til lege. Han ble kjent for å behandle mange av sine pasienter gratis. Familien Ozanam hadde vært kristen i mange århundrer, men de var stolte over å kunne spore sine aner tilbake til en jøde, Samuel Hosannam, som var blitt omvendt til kristendommen på 600-tallet av den hellige Deodatus av Nevers (Didier). Familien var blitt berømt tre generasjoner før Fredrik gjennom Jacques Ozanam (1640-1717), en fremragende matematiker. I 1816, etter Napoleon-imperiets fall, flyttet familien Ozanam til Lyon. Beato Antonio Frederico Ozanam Fundador da Sociedade São Vicente de Paulo Era sobrinho bisneto de Jacques Ozanam. Nasceu em Milão, Itália 23 de abril de 1813. Seu pai residiu primeiro em Lyon como um mercador e após vario reveses com a fortuna decidiu ir para Milão. Mais tarde ele voltou a Lyon e tornou-se um médico. Com 18 anos Frederico, na defesa da Fé escreveu “ Reflexões sobre a Doutrina de São Simão ”. Mais tarde ele estudou lei em Paris e viveu 18 meses com o ilustríssimo medico físico Ampere. Ele fez uma grande amizade com o filho de Ampere, Jean-Jacques Ampere, mais tarde conhecido pelos seus trabalhos em literatura e história. Naquela época ele ficou com muitas dúvidas. Ele disse: “ Deus deu-me a graça de nascer na Fé. Mais tarde a confusão de um mundo descrente me rodeava. Eu conheci o horror da dúvida e o tormento da alma. Foi então que a instrução de um padre e filósofo (Abbé Noirot) me salvou. Eu acreditei daí para frente com uma renovada fé e tocado por um Deus. Eu prometi a Deus devotar minha vida a serviço da verdade a qual me daria paz Raramente uma promessa é tão bem cumprida!
