W£ADYS£AW ORLICZ (1903- 1990)
Profesor W³adys³aw Roman Orlicz urodzi³ siê 24 maja 1903 roku w Okocimiu, w rodzinie pañstwa Franciszka i Marii Orliczów. Starszymi braæmi W³adys³awa byli Kazimierz i Tadeusz (pó¼niejszy profesor Szko³y G³ównej Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego), a m³odszymi Micha³ (tak¿e on zosta³ profesorem obieraj±c za przedmiot swoich zainteresowañ klimatologiê i meteorologiê) oraz Zbigniew. Franciszek Orlicz wcze¶nie i niespodziewanie osieroci³ swoich synów, ale matka ch³opców dzielnie i z oddaniem wype³nia³a swe rodzicielskie obowi±zki i nie zaniedba³a nale¿ytej edukacji swoich synów.
Lata szkolne

W pierwszych dwudziestu latach minionego wieku rodzina Orliczów do¶æ czêsto zmienia³a miejsca pobytu. Wi±za³o siê to z konieczno¶ci± zmiany szkó³, ale fakt ten nie wp³ywa³ w sposób istotny na postêpy w nauce W³adys³awa. Uczêszcza³ on do szkó³ w Tarnowie, morawskim Znaimiu i we Lwowie, gdzie Orliczowie osiedli tu¿ po I Wojnie ¦wiatowej. W³adys³aw, szczególnie w starszych klasach, uczy³ siê doskonale, a wstêpny okres edukacji zakoñczy³ 10 czerwca 1920 roku otrzymuj±c maturê w Pañstwowej Drugiej Szkole Realnej we Lwowie.

LINEAR FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
by Wladyslaw Orlicz (Polish Acad. Sci.)
translated from the Chinese edition by Lee Peng Yee (National University of Singapore, Singapore)
with an addendum by Wu Congxin (Harbin Institute of Technology)
Linear Functional Analysis resulted from a series of lectures Orlicz gave in Beijing, China, 1958. The orignal edition was published in Chinese in 1963. It contains all the major theorems that would normally appear in a modern text, the results of special interest to the Polish school, and others which are not easily available elsewhere. Orlicz provided in this book some rare insight and motivation in the subject which was initiated by the Polish school. An addendum to some recent results in Orlicz spaces is included.
Contents:
  • Some Preliminaries in Functional Analysis
  • Examples of B -Spaces and F -Spaces
  • A Unified Approach of Various Useful B -Spaces and F -Spaces
  • Normed Spaces Induced by Given Spaces
  • Equivalent Norms, Isomorphism and Isometry of Spaces

Latin Nicolaus Copernicus, was the son of a Torun burgher. Copernicus completed mathematical and astronomical studies at Krakow University (also known as the Jagiellonian University) and then studied the liberal arts at Bologna, medicine at Padua, and law at the University of Ferrara, from which he emerged with a doctorate in canon law. Using the instruments he constructed (the originals are in the Uppsala museum in Sweden, taken by the Swedes during the Deluge), Copernicus discovered and proved the heliocentric system, upsetting the medieval notion that the earth was the center of the universe. His theory, "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium," was published in Nuremberg, May 24, 1543, while Copernicus was on his deathbed. He was reluctant to have it published earlier because it was in conflict with the official teachings of the Catholic Church, which had adopted the Ptolemaic system because it was compatible with the literal interpretations of the Bible. The Copernican view was later corroborated and improved by the great German astronomer, Johannes Kepler (1771-1630) who, relying on the empirical measurements of the Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) made the orbits of the planets elliptical rather than circular.

    PREFACE
The Third International Conference "Function Spaces" held in Poznan (August 30 - September 4, 1992) was organized by the Institute of Mathematics of Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan. The Conference was devoted to the memory of Professor Wladyslaw Orlicz (1903-1990) - one of the founders of functional analysis and the organizer of modern mathematical school in Poznan. The main subject of the Conference was the theory of function spaces and related topics in functional analysis. During the Conference there were held 15 plenary lectures and 57 short communications. This volume contains 29 articles devoted to various topics in the theory of function spaces and Orlicz spaces, geometry of Banach spaces, the approximation theory, the interpolation theory and the general theory of linear topological spaces. Special thanks are due to Doc. M. Jaroszewska, Doc. S. Stoinski, Dr. M. Mikosz, Dr. A. Borucka-Cieslewicz, Dr. L. Skrzypczak, Dr. T. Kubiak and others for assistance in the organization of the Conference.

Dedicated to the memory of my teacher, Juliusz Schauder Before I give my personal reminiscences I would like to recall briefly what is known about Schauder's life (cf. [ ] and [ ]). I will not write here about his work, since this would take us too much aside (for this cf., e.g., [ ] and [ ]; unfortunately, neither text is in English: one is in French and the other in Japanese !). I will begin by quoting his friend and collaborator, Jean Leray (cf. [ ], p.11):
