Glossary entry for
Khayyam, Omar
Khayyam, Omar
Omar Khayyam was a twelfth-century mathematician, astronomer and teacher from Nishapur in Persia. He was also a poet, the author of numerous rhymed quatrains or four line poems, a verse form called in Persian "rubai". These four-lines epigrams were brought together in collections called Rubaiyat. Over 700 years later, in 1857, one such Omar manuscript came into the hands of Edward FitzGerald, who made from it one of the most popular poems in the English language. Experts have argued at great length whether FitzGerald's adaptation of Omar's poem is a faithful translation, but no one argues its beauty. The themes are earthy, yet infused with speculations on man's spiritual destiny. Perhaps the strong feeling of "Carpe Diem" or "seize the day"-motifs explains Van Morrison's attraction to these poems. After all he writes elsewhere: These are the days now that we must savour
And we must enjoy as we can
These are the days that will last forever
You've got to hold them in your heart This echoes some of the sentiments in The Rubaiyat, as in these stanzas:

Omar Khayyam
Omar Khayyam was born at Nishapur in Khorassan in the second half of 11th century and died within the first quarter of 12th century. It is quite appropriately claimed that Khayyam was the poet of destiny. However, it will be very wrong of us to think that he was a fatalist, at least by the common understanding and definitions that we have of this word.
There are two different thoughts about Khayyam's poems. One is that he was highly influenced by Islamic sufism, and his references to wine and lovers are allegorical representations of the mystical wine and divine love. Yet another type of thought is that Khayyam understood his mortality and inability to look beyond, and his references to wine and lovers are very literal and sensual.
Khayyam was a genius of his time. He was a counsel to ministers and kings. He was mathematician, who presented solutions to problems that were centuries ahead of his time. He was astronomer who calculated the duration of the solar year within unmatched accuracy, at least unmatched until this century.
A man who has done so much in his life is clearly not a mystical fatalist claiming “what will be, let it be!” In fact, he saw the folly of being mesmerized by such techniques, which may bring amazing visions of reality, but so long as they remain visions, they are not and cannot be truth, the reality itself.

He was called Khayyam [tentmaker] probably because of his father's occupation. The details of his life are mostly conjectural, but he was well educated and became celebrated as the outstanding mathematician of his time. As astronomer to Sultan Malik Shah, he was one of a group that undertook to reform the calendar. Their work led to the adoption of a new era, the so-called Jalalian or Seljuk era, beginning Mar. 15, 1079. Although he wrote a number of important mathematical studies, Omar's fame as a scientist has been greatly eclipsed in the West by the popularity of his Rubaiyat, epigrammatic verse quatrains. The work was little known in Europe until the freely paraphrased English translation of them was first published by Edward

The Time of Omar Khayyam
(Second Half Of Eleventh Century) The most original creations of this time were made in the field of mathematics by Muslims, and the most original genius among those to whom we owe these creations was the Persian Omar Khayyam. It is thus very appropriate to call this time the Time of Omar Khayyam, as Omar is already very well known to a large number of readers. It is probable that his name is more familiar to them than that of any other Muslim scientist. It will thus be relatively easy to remember the title, and I trust that this remembrance will reach to some extent the contents of the following pages. The time of Omar Khayyam was the end of the golden age of Muslim science. A new Muslim sect, that of the Assassins, an off-shoot of the Ismailiya movement, originated in Cairo about 1080.

OMAR AL-KHAYYAM
(1044-1123 A.D.)
Algebra would seem to rank first among the fields to which he contributed. He made an attempt to classify most algebraic equa- tions, including the third degree equations and, in fact, offered solutions for a number of them. 'This includes geometric' solutions of cubic equations and partial geometric solutions of most other equations. His book Maqalat fi al-Jabr wa al-Muqabila is a master- piece on algebra and has great importance in the development of algebra. His remarkable classification of equations is based on the complexity of the equations, as the higher the degree of an equation, the more terms, or combinations of terms, it will contain. Thus, Khayyam recognizes 13 different forms of cubic equatlon. His method of solving equations is largely geometrical and depends upon an ingenious selection of proper conics. He also developed the binomial expansion when the exponent is a positive integer. In fact, he has been considered to be the first to find the binomial theorem and determine binomial coefficients. In geometry, he studied generalities of Euclid and contributed to the theory of parallel lines. The Saljuq Sultan, Malikshah Jalal al-Din, called him to the new observatory at Ray around 1074 and assigned him the task of determining a correct solar calendar. This had become necessary in view of the revenue collections and other administrative matters that were to be performed at different times of the year. Khayyam introduced a calendar that was remarkably accurate, and was named as
