The amorous ones were taken by the public to be paeans to a female companion. That however is unlikely. They belong to a category of Persian poetry known as khamriyya, what we would call bacchic (or wine poetry). As such they were traditionally addressed to beardless wine boys, objects of desire and contemplation in the Islamic tradition. An invitation was sent to Khayyam from shah Malik-Shah in 1073 asking Khayyam to go to Esfahan to set up an Observatory in the city. Other leading astronomers were also brought to the Observatory in Esfahan, and for 18 years Khayyam led the scientists and produced work of outstanding quality. It was a period of peace during which the political situation allowed Khayyam the opportunity to devote himself entirely to his scholarly work. During this time, Khayyam led work on compiling astronomical tables, and he also contributed to calendar reform; in 1079 Khayyam measured the length of the year as 365.24219858156 days. Khayyam also solved the cubic equation x3 + 200x = 20x2 + 2000 and he found a positive root of this cube by considering the intersection of a rectangular hyperbola and a circle. An approximate numerical solution was then found by interpolation in trigonometric tables. Khayyam seems to have been the first to conceive a general theory of cubic equations, and perhaps even more remarkable was that Khayyam stated that the solution of this equation requires the use of conic sections and not the ruler and compass method, a result which would not be proven for another 750 years!

See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam is generally known in the translation(s) created by Edward FitzGerald in the nineteenth century. It is generally acknowledged that, for all their capturing the spirit of Khayyam's originals and so on, they are not truly faithful to the Persian verses. In addition, FitzGerald worked from a specific manuscript, which included verses that are now considered certainly not to have been by Khayyam. In an attempt to offer a truer picture of Khayyam's poetry Peter Avery and John Heath-Stubbs presented this version in 1979 (now available as a Penguin Classics paperback). It differs from FitzGerald's in that it contains considerably more verses (235 quatrains, as opposed to less than half as many in Fitz's versions), that the order differs (making comparison difficult), and that they try to be more faithful to the original Persian. This book also offers a thirty page introduction by Peter Avery, addressing many of the questions about the ruba'i form, Omar Khayyam, and his times, though many questions we had remained unanswered there. In particular, there is little explanation of their differences with FitzGerald, which we would have found useful.
